Classifieds / The Thirteenth Floor - Halloween Freebie
31 October, 2019, 07:58:28 PM
Good evening and happy Halloween squaxx! Munstroid here with a seasonal offer.

I was just checking some books I've got in a pile* and noticed... I've purchased The Thirteenth Floor (Rebellion paperback collection) twice. And judging by the discount sticker on the front, it was at Forbidden Planet, likely during one of those Souther meetups both times. That's usually when I go there.

Not intended as a criticism of the contents, mind. I'm just getting forgetful in my old age. I swear, when I shake my large melon I hear a rattling sound. Reckon I'd loose the whole noggin if it wasn't bolted on.

I was thinking of selling a copy, but you know what? Discovering  my brain-dead mishap the day before Halloween,** is so fascinating to me*** . If you'd like the copy and you don't mind covering the postage, PM me your address and it's yours.

First come, first serve seems fairest.

Whether you're successful or not, all the best to you.

*I was checking my copies of American Vampire so I didn't double-buy copies in the recent Halloween Comixology sale... and the irony has just hit me.

**On All Hallows Eve's Eve, one might say.

***I'm easily fascinated.

I know it's not comic related, (actually you can read comics on it but it's not good for that) but thought this might be of interest here.

I'm selling one of my Amazon kindles.

That makes it look like I have several.  I have two. Three if you include the iPad using the app, but I'm not selling that! 😆 (Now that's a very nice comics reader.)

Games / Emulation is the Situation
23 April, 2017, 04:55:52 PM
As I own a PS2, a PS3 and a laptop, I'm seriously considering selling my PS2.* Since my version of the PS3 (the super-slim. Yes they did an even slimmer version of their slim) is not backwardly compatible with PS2 games, and there are some I'd like to keep, I've been thinking of going the PCSX2 emulator route, essentially turning my laptop into a virtual PS2.

It's not a top range laptop, but it's far newer than the console, so I reckon it should handle it all right.

Trouble is, further investigation suggests it will be a right fiddly kerfuffle! Apparently the emulator isn't enough. I've got to extract the bios from my PS2 and install it. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done as to utilise the software that extracts the bios, I have to make the PS2 'homebrew'. ( I think that means, reconfigure the console so it will accept software not from Sony and commercial games companies).

I'll admit, I'm strongly tempted to just download a bios from the internet. Trouble is, that's illegal. It's not something I'd feel too guilty about since I bought the original console and the games, so I'm hardly conning Sony out of money. But I'd prefer to do things the legitimate route if I can.

So, the purpose of the thread: have any of you gone the PS2 emulator route?

How did you find the process? Any advice appreciated, but I appreciate this is primarily a comic book forum and there are other places I can find that information. (I have investigated although the job looks like a real headache.)

How did the games perform? Did they perform?

If you'd like to chat about your experiences with other emulators too, feel free to do that here too.

* More to free space rather than for the money, as I doubt I'll get much for it. Also thinking of getting a PS4 pro at some point, or maybe that new XBox when it comes out**, bit that will probably be a while yet.

** I feel more inclined to Sony than Microsoft, even when the latter produce better consoles. This new full 4K job does seem something special though.

Classifieds / Some Marvel books for sale
24 January, 2017, 03:11:38 AM
Hi,

I've put some collections/graphic novels on ebay in case anyone's interested.

Links:

Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous This is the Ultimate Graphic Novel edition. This is the second volume by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. I'm selling it as I bought a duplicate by mistake.

Thanos Rising

War Machine: Iron Heart

I'll happily post the items, but if you win you're welcome to pick them up if you want. I live in Dartford.

I've also got a couple of fantasy novels of the text variety. I won't put them on here just now, this being a comic board, etc, but you should find them easily enough on there.

Thanks

Hi,

I wouldn't normally advertise anything here that isn't comic related... but as this makes a rather good comic reader I thought some of you guys might be interested.*

A great gadget. I'm loathe to part with it actually. But, I need the money more right now.

*So I guess it is comic related. Not comics or comic related merchandise, I guess I really meant.

Classifieds / Free comics....
17 October, 2016, 04:46:30 PM
Hi,

I'm moving house soon, and so I figured I might as well get rid of my paper progs. (I know, I know...)  I tend to get them digitally now, and it's unlikely i'll read through these. If there are any stories I want, I will likely get the collection at some point.

Anyway,  I'm a relative newbie, and have a lot in digital now so my collection isn't all that big, or old, (back 8 or 9 years or so) but I'm offering them for free. I just ask you pay the postage or collect them.

I'd prefer to get rid of them all at once, since I've for around 3 weeks to move, but I'd consider breaking them up.

The collection is:

2000 AD issues:

1617 - 1639
1647 - 1673
1684 - 1702
1705 - 1707
1715 - 1716
1718 -1739
1771 - 1774
1803

Christmas progs: 2008 - 2011.

There might be minor creasing , tears etc. I  stored them loose in boxes, not on Bristol board or anything like that.

I'm not sure how some of those gaps came about, and possibly they'll be plugged if I find any more lying about, in which case i'll update accordingly.

I've a few Megs and other comics I will probably add to the list later.

If I receive no requests here within two weeks, I'll probably put them on eBay.

I've never played any of the Bioshock games, but I've read good things about them.

This looks like an excellent deal. £7.99 for the three? Think I might just take the plunge!

Hoping my laptop will manage it.  It's not exactly a gaming machine but these are relatively old games, and I think it meets the minimum requirements.

I linked to the main page of the offer, in case any other games take peoples' fancy.

Classifieds / Shimura Collection for sale
13 June, 2015, 10:28:52 PM
Hi, I created a thread a while back advertising comic collections and other stuff I had for sale on ebay.

I meant to add to that thread, but, like many things one puts down and doesn't use for a while, I seem to have mislaid it.

So appologies for creating this new one.

Anyway, it's the paperback of Shimura I have for sale. Please check it out here.

I decided to sell it as I've subscribed to the Judge Dredd Megacollection and a hardback of Shirmura came through the door yesterday. (Strangely it didn't include the first story which *is* in this version, but apparently that's in a Hondo City Justice edition later.)

This is a nice collection. Happy bidding.

Hi,

As I've got the new Partworks version of Origins I decided, a touch reluctantly (I particularly like the cover of this version) to put my original paperback version on ebay. I've also listed a few other books, mainly marvel comic collections.

Judge Dredd: Origins is here.

The listing for the lot is here.

I will likely add more items in future.

Edit- Note to anyone else listing stuff in future: the forum software breaks the link by adding an extra 'http://' if you enclose your link in quotes after 'url='. Just paste as it is.

Little heads up... cos I know a lot of you artists love this series of programs.

I'm tempted myself, although I suspect it's wasted on me.

Classifieds / Kobo Touch Ereader

Not comic related  (although you can read some comics on it if you don't mind the colour stuff  in monochrome or grey-scale) but as I've got my eye on Kindle's new Paperwhite I thought I'd put my old ereader on eBay.

Auction is winding down now but we've still got the rest of the day, and so here's the link if you'd like a butchers.

Moderators, if I'm out of order advertising this kind of item here, my apologies. Feel free to delete this thread.

Film & TV / Sleepy Hollow Series - Minor spoilers.
28 July, 2013, 07:16:02 PM
I'm sure someone started a thread about this a short while ago, but I couldn't find it. And ironically I couldn't find the search function either.

So apologies for the repeat.

Anyway, I enjoyed the film Sleepy Hollow a lot. (I know there seem to be a fair few here who dislike Tim Burton films. I'm not one of them, so I guess I'm biassed, but I think this is a good film regardless incorporating
supernatural
horror, creepy whimsical tone and location, comedy and period drama as it does. Oh, and a decent mystery story.) So I was intrigued to learn there was a series being adapted. I had an idea it might be an extension of the original idea, hopefully with twists to differentiate it from the original but a similar period drama setting.

I came across this article today on Bleeding Cool though. It seems they're bringing it to a present day setting with Ichabod Crane waking up after a long sleep Buck Rogers style.

Yeah. Not sure about that at all, although the review seemed fairly positive. I guess I can understand the change of time period when considering budget (I mean they relocated the Connors from the 90s to the noughties in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I seem to remember the nineties looking pretty similar).

Anyway, we'll see. The themes mentioned could be interesting. I don't really buy that reviewers idea that including religious elements will make it bad, just because it apparently was for Heroes. It's all about how it's done.

Film & TV / Cockneys Vs. Zombies
06 August, 2012, 05:25:36 PM
Okay, this is another film coming out which completely passed me by.

The zombie thing is getting a bit old... but this looks hilarious in places. (I'll admit I'm not keen on the over-swearing though.) One bloke looks like he's been transported straight out of Snatch, although he's probably not the scum bag he was in that one.

Anyway-  red band trailer, so lots of gore and potty language. I think Richard Briers will be the star of this. (
That zim-chase bit tickled me.
)

Click me you muppets.

I'm probably late, but I came across this today. It comes out in October apparently.

http://youtu.be/o3OlBgpFRb0

I remember a Silent Hill film sequel being mentioned ages ago, but I didn't realise it was coming out this October.

Anyway, I rather enjoyed the first film. I think they could have done a lot more with the story, made it scarier even, but it wasn't bad and it captured the imagery and tone of the games (okay, I've only played the first two) imagery and music well. And I though the ending interesting and thought provoking.

Don't highlight if you haven't seen the first film:
I am curious that the girl in this appears to be the young girl from the previous film all grown up though, considering how the other film ended.

Okay I guess that ending could be interpreted in different ways, i.e. she might not have actually died, but she and her mother seemed to have been separated from her father, like on another level of existence, and here is Sean Bean acting with her in this.  I wonder if that will ever be explained or just retconned out.
Anyway, it's interesting to see a certain fellow with an odd shaped head... (Brrrrr.)

Edit- Sorry, maybe I should have put this in the trailer thread. I thought it might be nice to open this up to a discussion of the films as well as the trailer though.

Books & Comics / What attracts you to a comic?
19 February, 2012, 05:39:22 PM
To quote DaveyCandlish in the What comics and collections do YOU get? thread:

Quotewhat attracts you to a comic? A known writer or artist? The subject? A review you've read? Maybe you had a flick through in the shop and liked the art? Do you ever buy 'blind'? (ie. read a review or seen a preview online and thought you'd give it a go?) Maybe this should be the start of a new thread?

It seems a good idea, so I've taken the liberty. Hope that's okay.

I think for me it's a mixture of the above. I'd like to think it's mainly subject matter but if it's by an author I like, I might buy it. I'm very much into Stephen King's Dark Tower novels for example so when I knew they were bringing out a comic series set between the Mejis stuff in Wizard and Glass and The Gunslinger, that was right up my street. I'd have preferred it if he'd written it himself, but as he was on board as executive producer and things went by him first, I was happy enough with that.

The comics themselves... were largely enjoyable if a mixed read.

I opted for American Vampire for similar reasons: King co-wrote the first volume. And I like a good horror comic and I like vampires if they're dealt with correctly. This take was interesting. Despite being drawn to it due to King, I'll continue to buy due to enjoying the other guy's work too.

I opted for 2000 AD mainly because a) I like Sci fi and b) I wanted to read a comic anthology as I just wasn't sure what was out there. An anthology with a wide selection provided a good gamble that I'd find something I'd like.

And 2000 AD led to collections, collecting back material. To be honest, I'm not really that focussed on author and artist in this case (no offence if you read this, I appreciate your work) it's all about the stories and characters. If I liked them in the Prog, I'll probably like them in the trades. That being said, certain writers stand out as providing particularly enjoyable stuff.

My reason for getting the Serenity comics are similar- I loved the Firefly series and spin-off film. The fact Joss Whedon co-wrote some of it or at least endorsed it as official was a contributing factor though.

I do pin-point some stuff according to the writer. I like Alan Moore for example, so some of the collections I've bought were specifically because he was involved.

As for buying blind based just on reviews, sure. I'd never read any of the Simping Detective stuff, but the reviews I read suggested interesting qirky subject matter, so I went ahead. My purchase of Fiends of the Eastern Front was mainly based on the subject matter.

I seldom buy for the artist, but I enjoy their work just the same. It's all about the story for me, but I certainly appreciate the artist telling that story well.

Film & TV / Prometheus
25 July, 2011, 12:34:03 AM
They showed some footage of Ridley Scott's new science fiction film, the 'sort of Alien prequel' Prometheus, as well as an interview with Ridley Scott and Charlize Theron at the San Diego Comic Con.

Anyway, the link is here. Some minor spoilers. In case you're disappointed, be warned, it's an article describing what happened not actual footage. I found it interesting enough though.

I'm looking forward to this.

Incidentally, I was going to post this in the existing  Alien Prequel thread, but when I attempted to, I got the message "this thread hasn't been posted in in over 120 days.  Please consider starting a new thread unless you really want to reply". I assume from that that a new thread is preferable. If I've made a mistake, my apologies; mods feel free to merge. I don't think it hurts to have a thread with the actual film title though.

This looks promising.

I know many of us enjoyed Dead Set.

I'm interested to see what he'll come up with in stories of a Twilight Zone, Tales of the Unexpected type leaning. Since each story is stand-alone I wonder if 3 will be enough though? Still, it could lead on to other things...

EDIT- Just changed the link. Originally I got the news from Den of Geek, but decided to search for the Channel 4 source. There's certainly more info on the next link. 3 60 minute episodes... and a possible technological slant. Hmm.

Film & TV / New Hulk Series....
19 November, 2010, 02:52:00 PM
... to be created by Guillermo Del Toro and David Eick:
Here's the story.

I'd imagine some people will be irritated considering how popular the original 70s series was. (Cue: Not another remaaaaake, etc, etc.)

However, there's plenty of other routes the series could take.  The original series was quite a major departure from the comics after all, decent though it was if a bit repetitive, in my view. It could be very interesting. I'm certainly interested to see Del Toro's take influence on it.
