Off Topic / The Older Dads Thread
06 March, 2019, 08:59:55 AM
Apologies if this isn't the sort of thread that should be posted on the forum.  However, most of the members here appear to be considerate and well-meaning - and full of sage advice.  You only have to look at the 'black dog' thread to see proof of that.

Good news - it looks like my wife and I are going to become parents - after 9 attempts at IVF and 3 attempts at donor eggs.  Not to mention my wife having to deal with a bout of cancer.

In a nutshell, I'm 48 years old - and I'm having some 'issues' coming to terms with the idea of being an older Dad.  I know it's normal for expectant fathers to have some anxiety (financial pressures, will I be a good Dad?, etc.).  But my situation is somewhat compounded when I do the maths and realise how old I will be at the various stages of our child's life, etc.  Reading 2000AD for 40 years has given me an over-active imagination!

I wish I could be more positive about our circumstances - but I'm finding it hard to keep the negative feelings at bay.  The last thing I want to do is upset my wife.

I'm wondering if there are any older Dad's on the forum who could possibly give me some reassurance that 'everything will be alright'?

And yes, I realise it's something of a first-world problem - but I would greatly appreciate some words of wisdom from someone who's been there and done that.  I'm considering talking to a professional - but I figured like-minded 2000AD fans might be a good place to start.

Thanks,
Craig.

I've been out of the loop for a while - has there been any news/gossip in relation to further 2000AD-related products from 3A? (1/6th and 1/12th scale).

General / Daily Dredd Volume 3?
06 October, 2017, 02:34:50 AM
Apologies if there's already a thread discussing this.  Conducted a search, but couldn't find anything that stood out.  Moderators - feel free to merge if that's not the case, etc.

Does anyone have any info on when volume 3 of the Daily Dredds will see publication?  And could someone refresh my memory on how many volumes will be required to cover the complete run of strips?

Cheers,
Craig.

General / Have any subscribers missed Prog 2049?
03 October, 2017, 11:49:43 AM
Hi,

I'm based in Oz.  Received Prog 2050 today - but no sign of 2049.  Have any other subscribers in Oz (or elsewhere) missed this prog?

It may well turn up in the next few days.

Cheers,
Craig.

Having lived on the south-side of the equator for my 46 years - and not having easy access to comic stores, I get the feeling there's a whole world of very cool European stuff that I've missed out on over the years.

I'd be very keen to hear any recommendations.

I seem to recall one title being advertised on Facebook recently (or maybe even here?).  It was something like, 'The Lost City" or "The Secret City" or similar?  I've since tried to search for it - with no luck.

I have a complete set of vintage Tintin's - but that's as close as I've got to the European scene! :)

General / 2000AD novels - what am I missing?
13 May, 2017, 07:51:37 AM
Would appreciate the hive-mind's assistance if possible!  :)

Being a completist, it's bugging me not knowing what 2000AD related novels I still need to acquire.  I tried using Barney - but didn't have much luck (maybe I was looking in the wrong place?).  I'm not too concerned about the digital novels - just the ones that have made it to print.  I'm fairly sure my collection is up-to-date, with the exception of the last few years - where I lose track of what's been printed on paper - and what has remained in the digital realm.

Here's what I have...

The 9 x original Virgin novels...

Moving onto the 'Black Flame' ones.  4 x 'Fiends' novels...

9 x Dredd novels...

2 x ABC Warriors novels...

3 x Dante novels...

2 x Caballistics novels...

5 x Strontium Dog novels...

5 x Durham Red novels...

2 x Slaine novels...

3 x Anderson novels...

3 x Rogue Trooper novels...

And finally the Fiefdom novel...

This is where it gets hazy for me...I know I'm missing a few from recent years?  Any ideas?

Classifieds / Wanted - 2000AD FCBD 2017 issue
29 April, 2017, 09:27:54 AM
Greetings,

Living beneath the equator - and a long way from any comic store - I don't have the opportunity to pick up the 2017 FCBD issue of 2000AD.  If anyone has a spare one, or can pick up one for me - I would be happy to pay postage to Australia.

Hell, I'll even pay a spotter's fee. :)

EDIT - whoa, only just noticed that NapalmKev has started a similar thread.  I guess there's a few of us in the same boat! :)

Cheers,
Craig.

General / 3A 1/6th scale Tharg (rethargified)
28 January, 2017, 02:24:10 AM
Many moons ago, I got my hands on a 1/6th scale Tharg figure from 3A.  However, for whatever reason - it didn't agree with the climate in Queensland, Australia.  This was the result...

Suffice to say, I was never going to sell in on eBay in that condition!  I've since acquired another Tharg (that hasn't deteriorated).  But what to do with the old one?

First up, I was able to salvage the following...

And here's the man himself (insert 'Tharg's organ' joke here).

I thought I'd go for an old-skool look, so I tracked down a pair of swanky blue overalls.  Also fashioned a 1/6th scale Space Spinner just for fun.  Here's the result...

And next to his 'brother'...

Instead of languishing in a cupboard - old-skool Tharg now takes pride of place in the Tooth collection!

Hi,

After some advice...

I'm in the process of getting a commission from a 2000AD artist.  We've been conversing (text-wise) via Facebook Messenger for some time.  The whole process has been a real thrill and I'd like to keep a record of the interaction as an accompaniment to the framed artwork.

Is there an easy way to print out the entire conversation (from go to woe) - or is it more a case that I might have to cut and paste everything into a text document - and then print it from there?

Any help - much appreciated!

Saw this for sale via Book Depository (apologies if it's been discussed elsewhere).

Has anyone on the board purchased it?  If so, what's it like?

Off Topic / Star Wars DL-44 Resin Blaster Kit
17 July, 2016, 05:46:28 AM
EDIT - apologies for the photos not displaying fully.  They resize on every other forum.  :(

Off topic, to be sure - but it's all sci-fi.  :)

Purchased the rather excellent Planet Replicas Mark 1 Lawgiver some years ago - and it sits proudly in the man-cave.

Thought I'd try my hand at making a resin kit of Solo's famous blaster.  Purchased the following resin kit from the UK.  As many of you will know, the DL-44 is based on a real-world C96 Mauser.  Strict firearm laws in Oz prevented me from utilising a replica Mauser for the build.  Happily, the resin kit was of excellent quality.  Here's some pics...

The kit itself...not much cleaning up required.  Note that this kit is based on the ANH version of the blaster (there's three additional variants available).

All primed up...

Working on the scope assembly...

Trying to make the resin grips look a bit like wood...

And the finished product.  A very satisfying build all round!  I painted the muzzle a slightly different colour (german grey) to match the original prop.  I believe the correct term for this colour difference is 'parkerized'.

Blaster was essentially spray-painted with Tamiya Metallica Black, then weathered with aluminium/copper paints and finished off with weathering pastels.

And the other side (sorry, it's a bit out-of-focus)

I have an E-11 Stormtrooper blaster resin kit on the way - but currently having some dramas with Australian Customs (still hopeful I will receive it down the track).  Can't wait to get started on it!

Once a completist, always a completist.  ::)

If anyone would like to off-load any of the 2000AD FCBD issues between 2011-2014, I would be more than happy to purchase.

NOTE - I reside in Oz, and quite happy to pay international postage.

General / Reading 2000AD on an iPad Mini?
25 March, 2015, 12:26:42 PM
Thinking of taking my first step into a larger world.  :)

Do any forum members read/subscribe to 2000AD specifically on an iPad Mini?  I've recently purchased an iPad Mini 2 (with a Retina Display).  Taking into account the dimensions, is the experience on par with a normal, larger-sized iPad?

Cheers,
Craig.

Apologies if this question has been asked before.  I tried searching the forum for answers - but to no avail.

In relation to the original Titan-published 'Chronicles of Judge Dredd' does anyone on the board know which specific issues/volumes were released in hard-cover?  I don't imagine all of them were - perhaps just some of the earlier issues?

Any info - much appreciated!  :)

Thought this might be of interest to collectors...autographed Dredd photos can be purchased from Official Pix's website.  Not particularly cheap though...

Suggestions / Updated 2000AD/Megazine Index?
31 March, 2014, 02:29:26 AM
Apologies if this has been discussed before...

I always thought the three 'MICRO-GUIDES' given away with Progs 800, 801 & 802 were a nice touch...

With Prog 2000 creeping up reasonably quickly - how feasible (or popular?) would an updated physical index be?

On-line resources (such as BARNEY) are fantastic.  Equally, the idea of a swanky updated physical index to accompany my 2000AD collection also appeals.

I'm imagining - hardback, leather-style cover, faux silk book mark - with perhaps some liner notes/comments from the editors/writers/artists that have contributed over the past 40 years or so?

Could be sold in the 2000AD shop - I know I'd buy a copy!  And a nice way to celebrate the comic hitting 2000 issues.  :)

Books & Comics / Custom 70's style comic rack
24 September, 2013, 11:06:29 AM
(Stay with me - there is a 2000AD connection!)

As a wee lad in the 70's, I remember buying comics from the corner-store (in New Zealand they were called 'Dairies').  The comics were displayed on spinner racks, such as this...

The comics were about 30 cents each.  :)

I've tried to acquire an original spinner rack for a while - but no luck here in Australia (you can still pick them up in the US though).  So I decided to make my own.  My rack doesn't spin like the originals - but it does the job!  The racks only cover three sides, so the whole unit can be positioned neatly up against a wall.  It can hold approximately 96 Marvel/DC-sized comics - of which I've filled about 50%.  I'll fill it up in time, no doubt.

Due to the dimensions, I couldn't really display any of my 2000AD issues - so I settled for a couple of Eagle Dredd's - the perfect size - and great Bolland covers to boot.

Here's some pics of the finished product.  I've concentrated mainly on Marvel/DC comics from the mid to late 70's, although there are a few exceptions here and there.  The idea was to emulate what I would have seen in the corner-store circa 1978!  Because the comics are old - they even have that musty smell about them.  :)

Hope the pics have induced some flash-backs to the olden days!  ;)

Howdy,

I'm wondering if a kind soul on the board might be able to help me?

I'm after 5 x clear comic bags and 5 x comic backing boards - suitable for the very first size 2000AD was published in (for example, like Prog 1).

I reside in Australia - so access to these size bags/boards is a bit problematic.  I could order from the UK - but then I'd be forced to buy in bulk (say 50 or 100 bags and similar numbers with regard to boards) - which I don't really require.

If someone has some left-over bags/boards - I would be more than happy to purchase for a reasonable price - via PayPal, etc.  I would also be happy to pay for postage to Oz.

Some time back, I wanted to hunt down an additional run of Progs 1-10 - which I've completed.  I now just need bags/boards for progs 1,7,8,9, and 10 to keep them in good shape.  :)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Craig.
