*prepares self for Sláine: the battle of the purple Drune Lord cocks*

But, yeah, this could be aces. Davis quite often has a kind of rough 'n' ready sensibility that could make this akin to McMahon's time on the strip combined with a bit of Bisley, versus Langley's more photo-realistic stuff. Definitely good to see things being shaken up a bit, too.

Quote from: pauljholden on 13 April, 2013, 07:30:31 PMwhat was the big gangly claws gently caressing people's faces about?
I imagine the production people would say he was learning about the humans and/or the crew were trying to make it creepy. To my mind, that (and much of the episode) felt very old-school Who. The pace, despite some running about, was much, much more measured than usual, and the story was simple rather than flinging a million ideas at the screen per second. I thought it was pretty good and a lot better than last week's effort.

DVD review? Pathetic change-of-heart, like one mag (possibly Total Film—either that or Empire) did for Phantom Menace?

Quote from: Colin_YNWA on 12 April, 2013, 06:16:27 PMWell on the one hand its good that they're kept the proportions, on the other the art will be greatly reduced in size.
It could be worse. At least, unlike in the TFUK reprints, they didn't then make it even smaller by putting the thing inside a double gutter. Sometimes design decisions really baffle me. (That said, it's a pity they couldn't have done something better here, even vertical alignment.)

Yeah, I'd be gutted if another Dredd strip meant we couldn't have 20 pages of photo strip. :p

I'd love to see a movie adaptation in the Meg followed up by the sequel, although I imagine that's unlikely (after all, we've seen the movie, but people are hankering for more, not a 'repeat'). On the various continuities, I don't really give a monkey's about IDW's Dredd, but I would like to see more of the movie Dredd, and if a strip in the Meg is how it can be done, I'm all for that. Frankly, I'd sooner the Meg becomes more Dreddish anyway. I loved those earlier issues, but it these days still often strays into becoming a monthly version of 2000 AD.

I very much doubt it. It could be a candidate for the Meg floppy, if material people want to see runs out. I'd sooner see the Daily Star Dredds collected first though (and in trade format, not in the floppies).

Why did it get cancelled? Cause word got out that the film was shite?
The film had been out for almost a year by the time the comic was canned. I imagine there was in part a disconnect (a comic aimed at kids for a movie with a rating that meant they wouldn't have been able to watch it) combined with the typical diminishing returns you get over time from a licensed property. Most don't last that long, and LOTF lasted 23 issues, which isn't too bad.

I read the set through once and I didn't think they were too bad. The strip is somewhat reminiscent of old Dredd, although the comic's law is watered down a little regarding things like lethal force. It also had Geoff Senior on art duties now and again, who's someone I'd love to see back in the Prog one day.

I thought it was cartoonish. I've seen a lot worse.

Some fair points, to which I'd add that Dredd running out of ammo was always a bit BWUH?, given that he could at any point have grabbed at least a back-up piece from one of the countless goons he shot. Still, for most of the plot holes, it's easy enough to make a counterpoint:

- Why grab Kay? Because the judges do still have some kind of law they adhere to—they're not just shooting everything that moves.

- Ma-Ma's overreaction I took as her arrogance and also the movie's world being one where the judges are seriously overstretched. "Do you know how often we get a judge in Peach Trees?" is a very telling statement. Perhaps Ma-Ma simply underestimates Dredd. But, yeah, it turns out she's not the best strategic thinker in the world. (Mind you, who said she was? Her blitz through the block appeared to mostly be driven by fear and ruthlessness, not calculating cunning.)

- On the skate park, they could have waited about for an air unit, but I imagine Dredd's thinking was that they'd already come under fire from dozens of goons. Sooner or later, someone would have figured out where they were, and there would have been no escape. If the judges are stretched beyond breaking point in the movie, how long would the air support have taken? Five minutes? Half an hour?

Still, as noted in the post, it's first and foremost a movie that keeps its plot barrelling on, and so sometimes it doesn't entirely hold up to scrutiny. That said, Dredd doesn't fall apart the moment you start thinking about it in any depth, unlike, say, the most recent Batman film or Looper, and so that's a good thing!

More agreement from me. I've subscribed to many publications over the years, but, without doubt, 2000 AD's service is the best of them. Many other publishers increment subs—in other words, if an issue doesn't show up, they just extend your subscription. When a 2000 AD (or Meg) has failed to show up, a quick email to Denise results in another being dispatched. You also get the advantage, at least 99 per cent of the time, of getting your Prog before it hits the shops. The vast majority of the time mine arrives on Monday or Saturday.

Also, subscriptions are the lifeblood of any publication, and so it's in many ways a better way of supporting 2000 AD than grabbing it on the store shelves.

Good to see Dredd's still strong. Interesting that Rennie gets top 'billing' but I guess that doesn't really mean anything (what with the short Guardian piece saying it was quite obviously a mash-up collaboration). Here's hoping Beeby doesn't lose interest and might do some Dredd (or something else) of her own in future—2000 AD could really do with more women contributing, especially in terms of scripts.

That's usually the case with Amazon, though; there's a publication date and there's a 'when it arrives at Amazon' date for anything niche. With Atomic Robo's most recent books, there's been the publication date, the Amazon US date (within a day or three) and the Amazon UK date (a couple of weeks later—or, in the case of the most recent book, about two months later).

Yeah, that looks OK to me. Good to see it not demolish the original art, unlike IDW's dreadful work on the US Marvel Transformers run. (The UK run merely being very poor, through being reprinted in tiny-o-vision.)
