Help required from boarders - what indie genre stores are in your area?

HOO-HAA

Hey fellow boarders,

As some of you may be aware, from a previous pimpage post of mine, I'm due to release my second horror novel, FLU, through Snowbooks at the end of the month. The book should be on sale throughout Waterstone's, Forbidden Planet and (hopefully) selected Forbidden Planet International stores throughout the UK and Ireland.

I'm still a relative newcomer to the genre and so am keen to pimp the book as much as I can - particularly to genre stores. So, what I was hoping you fellow boarders could do to help me is simply list here (or PM me) the contact details of any local indie genre stores you know from your area. What I'll then do is mail the store manager a signed copy of FLU and details of the publisher, in the hope that they may consider stocking the book.

All participating boarders will be entered into a special prize draw to win a signed copy of the book themselves and I'll announce the winner on this very thread.

I hope you guys can help me out with this.

Thanks a lot!  :)

Sheffield Space Centre is by far the best in my part of the world. The only e-mail details I have are

orders@space-centre.co.uk

But contact can be made here

Thanks a lot, Colin. They have an impressive website for sure.

The address listed on the website is:

33 The Wicker,

Sheffield.

S3 8HS.

England. UK.

Does that seem correct to you?

Also, would you have a contact name (manager/ prolific staff member who likes horror)?

Cheers, again! Your name is first to go in the draw!  :)

Shoot, I can only think of the Forbidden Planet nearby...next time I'm in Cambridge, I'll have a closer look around for you. Good luck with your FLU, sir!

In Liverpool you have the Forbidden Planet on Bold St:

92 Bold Street
Liverpool
L1 4HY
Telephone: 0151 707 1491

http://forbiddenplanet.com/stores/

And World's Apart on Lime Street (only a couple of minutes walk from Bold Street):

58-60 Lime Street
Liverpool
L1 1JN
Phone: 0151 707 0839

Type L1 into the store locator (because, confusingly, WA is Forbidden Planet International Associate):
www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=store_locations
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Address defo right as for names after going there for what 8 years and chatting away happily the funny thing is we're way past the point were I can ask their names and I don't know them. One might be called Paul but that can be said of many men!

Other Sheffield shops that I don't know that much about are

Forbidden Planet Sheffield
12 Matilda Street
Sheffield
S1 4QD
Phone: 01142 769 475

and Galaxy Four though their really a Doctor Who specialist.

There's also 'the last Picture Show' in Meadowhall but they focus on Movie stuff these days.

In Cardiff, we've got this guy...

I don't know if he's still got his shop in the arcade as I don't often go to that end of town, but he's got contact details and a trading address on his website.

HOO-HAA

Cheers, Emp - I think FP and FPI are pretty much covered, though.

Wordlshown, that's pretty helpful - I'll look at sending them something.

Thanks, all! I really appreciate your help. Keep the suggestions coming!  :)

Great shop in Dublin called Sub City, really great bunch of guys who run it. Sure they'd be happy to talk to you.

Travelling Man Comics are a small chain in the North - addresses of their shops here: http://travellingman.wordpress.com/category/shop-addresses/
They're cool, freindly shops -like FP without the comic-snob attitude!

HOO-HAA

Perfect, Van! I'll look into that. Thanks.

Dan, thanks a lot! Do TM sell novels as well as comics and board games?

Colin MacNeil

Try Deadhead Comics in Edinburgh. The guy in charge is a guy called Gaf, he has a definite leaning towards indie comics. In fact I would say he has probably one of the last purely "comic" shops left in the country, it's not a toy shop that also sells comics. The shop is on Candlemaker Row, tel 0131-226 2774 (from memory).
Hope that helps Hoo-Ha. :)

HOO-HAA

Colin, thanks a lot! :)

Mind you, FLU is a novel, not a graphic novel or a comicbook.

Would Deadhead sell genre novels as well as comics and GNs?

I don't think it does books. There's a place just round the corner called Transreal which might be better suited.

In Glasgow you can try you luck with Future Shock
We never really die.
