Vangelis Papathanassiou, renowned for his film scores of Bladerunner, Chariots Of Fire and others, has died. A brilliant composer, I feel his Bladerunner score is nigh unsurpassable. Unfortunate news, indeed.

Off Topic / Is Block Wars The Future?
« on: 10 May, 2022, 01:48:13 PM »
2000AD often predicts the future, and is the current world political situation similar to the 'Block Wars' of Mega-City One, but on a gigantic continental scale? America forms one block, Europe another, Russia a third, China a fourth and India plus Japan a Fifth block, all competing against one another for power, influence and resources. Are we now in a period of competition with blocks cooperating with other unions to undermine a third rival group? Australia, Japan and India work together against China's rising Pacific power, say as one possible example. Was Judge Dredd right in its prediction, and 'Block War, Man!' is the grim reality we face now?

The BBC has picked actor Ncuti Gatwa to be the new Doctor Who. We'll have to hope he gets better scripts than Jodie Whittaker received.

Of Evil Dead fame and recently he directed Dr Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Sam Raimi is thinking about making some stories from Night Shift by Stephen King. With several films already made from this Anthology, you wonder if it might be remake time for 'Sometimes They Come Back' or even [groan] 'Maximum Overdrive.' I hope Sam Raimi does an original story like Gray Matter or I Am The Doorway instead.

Film & TV / Another UK Film Studio proposed!
« on: 05 May, 2022, 01:53:35 PM »
Will leafy Buckinghamshire gain a new Film Studio? With Leavesden and Pinewood nearby in Hertfordshire, High Wycombe, of Mayor weighing fame, might be the place. It's just along the road from me, so maybe I'll get 'ugly extras' work.

Absolute Legendary Comic Artist Neal Adams has died. Damn! He was such a brilliant draughtsman; he revolutionised the medium and produced what was probably then unequalled photorealistic art.

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

Moonraker-Ian Fleming. It's the first James Bond I've ever read and has some intriguing post-WW2 tones with German rocket Engineers employed by a British Firm led by Hugo Drax to create an unstoppable Intercontinental Ballistic Missle. Drax was cheating at cards at a London Club, the Bounder, and this unacceptable behaviour propels Bond into Drax's world of then cutting edge manufacturing. Very readable, which surprised me, as I thought Bond books would be a relatively dry affair.

No Time To Die. The final Bond with Daniel Craig was pretty good with a fine cast, good action scenes, a few shocking twists and a nod to the possible future. Interesting, the end occurred in a 1950s Missles Silo, Bond being a product of the post-WW2 world. The Villian's motivation seemed slightly skewed, but Pierce Brosnan's Die Another Day and Roger Moore's A View To A Kill was far worse as final Bond films go.
