Classifieds / Don't say I didn't warn you
27 January, 2013, 07:54:44 PM
Well while the world explodes about the fact that sometimes men kiss other men (and sometimes even more, but I'm sure I don't know what that might involve.) I come here one final time to offer solice in the form of comic book bargains the like of which won't be seen until next time I get bored and sell the next lot of stuff I have set aside for sale.

You know the drill, well if you've been fool enough not to snap up all you could possibly afford by now already. Relists of the stuff still for sale (I will never stop being surprised by what does sell and what doesn't. eBay sales are no yard stick for quality a lot of the time that's for sure!) and a few new items. This time a load of rare early Bone issues. All original Cartoon Books editions, most 1st Print. I decided against listing my 1st Print issue one but if someone fancies offering me silly money for it...

Anyway have fun cos when they're gone, this time they're gone (well one more relist maybe...)

His is GOLD I tell ya.

Over at The Beat they have a linkie to parts of a script Rob Liefeld has written for a movie about the rise of Image. Just read the 'Bye Bye Marvel' scene its hilarious. Its funny that it might even be true. I REALLY hope that's how it happened!

I'm sure I could have got more 'b' words in there if I'd have tried, but Christ look how when I did it really wasn't worth the effort...

oh yeah Karl strikes again and there's a Bisley interview pretty much all about 2000ad over at CBR

Don't forget if you get the chance leave a comment as that's how they judge the popularity of an article apparently.

Books & Comics / Mavel Now! Augmented Really features.
13 January, 2013, 03:18:25 PM
Now there's a thing. I picked up my first Marvel floppie for an age after failing to resist Mile Allred's art on FF (glad to it was fun) BUT there thing that really got my attention was the AR features they've built into the comic. Now there's great potential for these to become faffy gimicks that serve no purpuse but to pull you out the story BUT at other times I thought they were really nice. Like the old editors notes but with added content (a great one) or cute additional panels that add a little something to the story.

So annoying gimick, or glimpse of the future?

Personally not sure yet but these have potential.

Have I missed this or had this come completely out the blue? Looks like Titan have made the great leap forward and are starting to realise creator owned material.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/08/si-spurrier-headlines-a-new-creator-owned-imprint-from-titan-comics/

There looks like there's going to be some very interesting stuff, including Numbercruncher as a three part mini (I've been waiting for this to be traded so happy about that one) and a few others involving local talent. Hope this is as good as it looks and is a success.

General / 2000ad place 13 in CBRs top 100 of 2012
30 December, 2012, 07:58:51 PM
Placing 13th in a top 100 of the year is clearly 12 places too low when you look back on the year of thrill-power we've just had BUT when you take into account this is on a run down from a mainstream US comics site that's a pretty damned impressive achievement.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=42890

As ever we have Karl to thank for this... but he's not alone...

... and being the selfless fool that I am I'm here to help you with that.

Go on X-Mas has been long and hard, your tired you deserve a reasonably priced comicy treat. I give you the goodness

As ever lots of relist (though more and more of this stuff goes each time) and some new stuff.

General / Ian Edginton over at CBR - new Stickleback
21 December, 2012, 08:21:38 PM
That stalwart of 2000ad promotion state side Karl has done it again. This time with a great interview with Ian Edginton with a very big focus on the furthercoming return of Stickleback AND some hints at the shared world.

Now normally I mock Newsarama's incessant and often banal 10 ten this and 10 ten that's, but I learnt my hypocrisy on football terraces where hypocrisy is an art form! So I was very exicted to see Judge Dredd place in Newsarama's poll for comic characters of the years.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/10-comic-book-people-of-the-year-1.html

At first I thought it'd focus on the movie, not a mention, its all about the comics (and not the IDW one either). Then I thought it'd be a Karl thing, then I remembered that was the other big US comics site CBR. So this is a straight up, on its own merits vindication that Dredd is becoming something more in America.

Books & Comics / Jamie Hewlett to return to Tank Girl?
19 December, 2012, 04:02:34 PM
Well this is certainly interesting.

QuoteMy wife [actress Emma de Caunes] had never read the story, So she went and bought all the books. Then she then forgot about them, and I started looking at them and realised that, apart from the last three or four strips I drew in that 10 year period, pretty much 90% of it was shit. Really, it was. I spoke to [Tank Girl writer] Alan Martin, and he remarked on how it had been so successful, yet the execution on our part was so bad. I said that "now we're in our forties, and I can draw much better, and you're a much better writer, wouldn't it be great to revisit Tank Girl, do a one-off graphic novel, but do a really good one, and really knock it out of the ball park?' So we might do that next year. It's a great character, so anarchic; just a tool for us to rant about all the shit we hate.

So like that'd be interesting. I know Tank Girl wasn't too well received in the Meg (I've not read those stories) but what I have read I've always liked and if nothing else it'd be interesting to see what Mr Hewlett would do these days. Not convinved we'll see it, but it'd be nice if we did.

Full interview here.

http://uk.phaidon.com/agenda/art/articles/2012/december/05/ten-questions-for-graphic-artist-jamie-hewlett/

Via Robot 6 (via CBR).

Oh and not wishing to end on a base note, but I did not know who Jamie Hewlett was married too and ya know... well done Jamie Hewlett is all I can say!

Other Reviews / The Helltrekkers
14 December, 2012, 11:31:15 AM
Damnit I so wanted to enjoy The Helltrekkers. I mean what's not to like, Wagner and Grant, The Cursed Earth, death and mayhem in bountiful supply, but somehow it didn't quite work for me.

Maybe it'd have been better served if Jose Ortiz had remained on art beyond the first part, which looked bloody lovely I have to say. Horacio Lalia's wasn't bad, it just felt a little functional and lacked the bewildering variety that might have served the story better?

Maybe it was the format of the story which read as just a series of events designed to kill off the next lot of passengers. A simple check list of things that can go wrong in the Cursed Earth. Not enough time spent developing the characters and making me care enough about them getting bumped off? Though its fair to say the last few episodes I really enjoyed and thought the ending was great.

Shame as it was pretty close to being fun and in many ways felt like the last of its kind. An open ended story from earlier days that we won't really see its like again. Struggle to rationalise that one fully and maybe Mean Team was a similar thing but it was time when 2000ad was changing and it looks kinda old next to its contemporaries.

Still not terrible, just not great.

Books & Comics / Swamp Thing
12 December, 2012, 12:46:27 PM
Okay so a post over at The Beat got me thinking. In the comments section in an article about Scott Snyder leaving Swamp Thing after #18 someone suggested that it'd be great if Al Ewing was to take over (I assume that who  they mean, up and coming British writer called Al - has to be right?)

How bloody great would that be - I mean absolutely fantastic if he did. Well, anything that takes away the time he has writing for 2000ad being a bad thing aside, BUT if he was going to get a US title that'd be the one. Or is one big green monster enough in anybodies life?

http://comicsbeat.com/scott-snyder-leaving-swamp-thing-with-18/

As I know there's at least one big Swampie fan here I thought it'd be worth asking for opinion, or alternatives.

News / Dave Sim does Dredd
04 December, 2012, 07:28:35 PM
I know, I know JD Year One has its own thread BUT BUT BUT this got me giddy with excitment. Dave Sim has done a cover for the series. I NEVER thought I'd see this and no doubt will never own the thing as it'll be a one in gazillion variant BUT how cool (and weird) is this!

Books & Comics / Moore vs. Morrison. This time its WAR!!!
25 November, 2012, 07:31:10 AM
Really interesting article over at The Beat about the relationship between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Well actually Grant Morrison responding to comments made about him by Alan Moore.

http://comicsbeat.com/the-strange-case-of-grant-morrison-and-alan-moore-as-told-by-grant-morrison/

...well its interesting to those of us who enjoy reading the about antics of great comic writers or very minor celebrates in the real world, as much as I do.

I wonder if this thread can reach the heights of the Moore Byrne page???? I can only wish...

Other Reviews / Thoughts on ‘Nikolai Dante Thoughts’
22 November, 2012, 04:51:21 PM
Well its kinda a review. I recent article over at ECBT 2000ad got me thinking about endings and the ending of Nikolai Dante in particular and so I ended up writing a little article, not so much in response to the original article but more in addition to. Anyway if you fancy reading it its here.

http://2000ad.wordpress.com/2012/11/22/thoughts-on-nikolai-dante-thoughts/

The original and rather nice article by Peter Misljen is here.

http://2000ad.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/nikolai-dante-thoughts/

You might enjoy reading them... or you might rather dig your own teeth out with a blunt spoon. The choice is yours really...
