Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 45 - Paperback, 304 pages, 12th September 2024

THE ASCENT OF MANDROID!

Cybernetic ex-soldier Nate Slaughterhouse – AKA Mandroid – was last seen rampaging through Mega-City One on a vigilante killing spree. Hellbent on avenging the murder of his son and finding his missing wife, Slaughterhouse took the law into his own hands. But Mega-City One only knows one law, and his name is Dredd. The infamous Judge stopped Mandroid in his tracks and sent him to the Iso-cubes. Now, it's two years later and Nate Slaughterhouse wants revenge...

The best-selling series collecting the law in order continues in this explosive volume written by John Wagner (A History of Violence), Gordon Rennie (Warhammer), Robbie Morrison (The Authority), Pat Mills (Marshal Law) and Alan Grant (Batman), with art by Simon Coleby (The Punisher 2099), Ian Gibson (The Ballad of Halo Jones), Colin MacNeil (Devlin Waugh), Henry Flint (Rogue Trooper), David Roach (Demon), Mike Collins (Superman), Cliff Robinson (Vector 13), John Hicklenton (Heavy Metal Dredd), Boo Cook (Doctor Who), Tan Eng Huat (Doom Patrol), Simon Fraser (Nikolai Dante), Paul Marshall (Sinister Dexter) and Smudge (Chiaroscuro).

Ah, rats! (Stainless Steel ones.)  I was hoping for a brand new colouring job.  The Eagle editions will be 'bodged' to fit the dimensions of a US comic book, won't they?  (I suppose that works better for the modern reprint size.)  As Le Fink says, the flat colouring in the Apoc War volume is rather good.  Fantagraphics are doing a great job going the same way with their Carl Barks library issues.

I totally agree.  Ichabod Azrael, for example, should stay as is.

I love the way Cam Kennedy drew the Traitor General.  Having his disfigured helps conceal his identity (which one of the four was he?), which could be used as a plot point.  Also Nu Earth is a hellish place and everything you're exposed to can hurt you.  I think having disfigured characters to contrast with Rogue helps sell how powerful an advantage he has not needing any protection from the toxic, corrosive environment, as well as his superior skills as a soldier.

I bought the original SSR collection, and the special hardback, and I can see myself buying this new colour omnibus.  I can also see a full colour Strontium Dog coming a little while down the track after the hardback Strontium Dog has been completed. That's a reasonably finite set of stories to tackle.  Perhaps the Rogue Trooper movie will prompt full colour releases of classic RT too, at least in part.  IDW already made a start on that.

Dredd is an interesting one to consider.  There is a heap of B&W stories to tackle if you want to do anything, but equally a plethora of full colour material to entice the reader, and perhaps little value trying to make the quirky early stories more attractive.  Rebellion could pick a random point, e.g. Apoc War, and start colouring from there; even jumping around and publishing volumes out of order to get the good stuff out first.  Again, IDW already released a full colour Apoc War volume so there's a little bit of a start in place already.

Now I think about it, I'd be all over a full colour Meltdown Man book.

The hard-hitting second volume of the acclaimed Dreadnoughts series, depicting the early days of Judge Dredd's world.

After a crime blitz in Boulder leads to riots against the Judges' excessive use of force and violation of human rights, the Hemlock Cartel takes advantage of the chaos to declare all-out war against the Justice Department. It is up to Judge Glover to eradicate their threat - even if her crusade could risk revealing the long-buried secrets of her past.

That "From the pages of Judge Dredd" logo always reminds me of the Stallone movie.
