Another strong week here...in week ... scchhh whatever (Week 8 keeping track fans). I mean that's all relative, but for this Round there are some great thrills coming up in this week's tie. I mean sure the normal peppering of dross, but some really strong thrills and for me at least, interesting ties.

The Mind of Wolfie Smith - survivor of the Tornado merge - comes in for a hard time. I however really like it, and the fact that he's a teenage dick really makes the whole thing work. We'll also get some cries of Jesus Redondo, who among other did stella work on the series. That said it comes up against another strong self contained story by our own PJ and the much missed Al Ewing

Which most rattles your thrill-receptors:

Mind of Wolfie Smith - more info

Vs.

Dead Signal - more info

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Friday 17th December and the winner gets a place in Round 2 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this?

For those that need 'um and can be bothered to follow 'um there's some simple rules

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

Old age is the Lord's way of telling us to step aside for something new. Death's in case we didn't take the hint.

There must be some reason why Wolfe Smith has never been reprinted? Despite it being 40 years since I read it, and remembering hardly anything about it, I still feel fondly about it. Dead Signal I remember vaguely - was that the Indigo Prime one?

Dead Signal was not the Indigo Prime one - it's the slightly tricksy one that was sort of about reality TV and fame and sort of about living out virtual reality dreams, and was so full of ideas you could tell PJ Holden was having all the fun drawing it, but it's a head-scratcher that has, perhaps, something of the Wireheads about it.

Wolfie Smith is a super fun character and I'd dearly love for his strip to be reprinted, especially the Tornado stuff that I've never read (only ever managed to get hold of two issues of Tornado). The actual plots are proper bad but the art is really good and just the premise of this absolute cock of a teen boy with really very strong psychic powers but no inclination towards super heroics or even a Preacher-like mission to avenge himself on his childhood bullies. Wolfie is even lazier and more venal than Zenith. I want Michael Carroll and DaNi to reboot him.

So yeah, Dead Signal may be a better comic, but I'm voting on the strength of the character at the centre of The Mind of Wolfie Smith.

The Mind of Wolfie Smith was mint, loved it.

Dead Signal
Tracer meets The Bridge, as a be-goggled reality television bounty hunter might really be a man in a coma. The ending suggests a next act, but that was in 2008 so this is probably abandonware.

The Mind of Wolfie Smith
Inherited from Tornado: this is the tale of a young hobo with ESP and preternatural bad luck.

My vote goes to the flawed, but still interesting, The Mind of Wolfie Smith.

Thanks for that. Still struggling to remember it though!
