Off Topic / Re: And so it ends...

I have also stopped but not because of any concerns over quality. My prog reading habits were linked to the Space Spinner podcast and when that slowed down to a halt I got out of the habit of reading 2000AD weekly and my backlog grew and grew. I was having some troubles getting the sub renewal to work and thought I might as well not bother since I am struggling to read all the content.

I have dipped in and out of 2000Ad over the years so I expect I will pick it up again some time. Also, I will continue to buy the Case Files and the occasional trade so I am still financially supporting the institution that is 2000AD to some degree.

Hi Eamonn,

I am currently watching the 2000ad adjacent film Accident Man on Pluto tv - a straight-to-dvd film based on Pat Mills and Tony Skinner"s strip of the same name. It is better than you would expect and I can't remember you covering it on Mega City Film Club so thought I would mention it here. Is Mega City Film Club continuing now Conrad has gone back to the US?

Quote from: PsychoGoatee on 11 February, 2024, 05:20:08 PMdo you like any of the more easy read fun ones as well?

Probably Johnny Red is the next one. As a kid, I did enjoy Major Eazy and at the time I loved the strip. Johnny Red was a great one too but Charley's War is the one that transcends its publishing time and stands up to a re-read.

As Colin has already mentioned, Charley's War by a very big margin. If it was a 2000AD strip it would be in the top 5 of all time.

I was disappointed by Major Eazy. I bought a lovely glossy reprint of a large batch of stories and the Carlos art is lovely and keeps you going. (I think Carlos carried the Tharg The Mighty stories, but Major Eazy isn't as bad as that). My problem with Major Eazy is that he seems to have jedi-like powers. His shots always hit, even if he isn't trying. He always reads the situation correctly and nobody can fool him. He is always effortless great and there really is no challenge for him since whatever happens he will resolve it with minimal effort.

Read Charley's War instead as it might be Pat Mills best ever thing - and he wrote Robusters, ABC Warriors, Nemesis, some big early Dredd stuff, and Slaine.

Yes. And great storytelling skills. Underrated I think.

He was certainly underrated by me. At the time (1980's) I didn't like his work much and was disappointed if it was Ron Smith on Dredd instead of Carlos Ezquerra or Steve Dillon  but returning to the stuff decades later with Rebellion reprints and I now see he was brilliant. Especially good with freaky stuff.

The Return Of Rico. It was the first strip to give a little background to Dredd, it introduced Rico and Titan and it is a great little conclusion to en epic long story that is hinted at but we never saw.

Alone In A Crowd is another all time classic single episode. I like the way it shows an amazing city of the future at surface level but also the undercurrent of fear that people live with there.

Judge Minty is another unforgettable single strip that brought more world building and a little insight into how the suppressed humanity is harshly dealt with when it starts to emerge.

Quote from: 13school on 21 January, 2024, 05:36:08 AMDid anyone ever read Chain Gang War?

I did and it was very good. It could have been set in Mega City 1 as it is very much like a Dredd spin-off story.

Welcome Doomlord66! Doomlord was an excellent strip and I wonder why it hasn't been absorbed into Rebellion's portfolio as it is a strip that would fit very nicely next to 2000AD stuff.

For those of us not in the know, did David Bishop actually produce a prog with this line up?

edit: Someone has already found it

Nice idea. I would go for (in this sequence):

Nikolai Dante - Morrison & Fraser
Robo Hunter - Wagner, Grant & Gibson
Dredd - Wagner & Dillon
Aquila - Rennie & Gallagher
Strontium Dog - Wagner & Carlos

So a heavy workload there for Wagner. And I would have Bolland draw the cover.

Ian's work on Robo Hunter was what hooked me into buying 2000AD and he is a childhood hero for me and I am sure many others here. I am glad that he got to hear some of the appreciation and respect so many of us have for him before he went.

I really enjoyed them too, being a returning reader who missed much of the stuff re-printed in these. Some of the ones I enjoyed most are:

Black Siddha - Bad Karma
Black Siddha - Kali Yuga
Black Siddha - Return Of The Jester
Zero - 1 - Night Zero
Zero - 2 - Beyond Zero
Mercy Heights (Books 1 - 4)
American Gothic
Download Tales (1 - 3) + I think there were some Sinister Dexter ones

There was a thread a while ago where a few posters were quite mean about Mercy Heights but I really enjoyed it.

Another good one that I struggle to remember the name of was all about demons trying to outmaneuver each other in the realms of the afterlife/hell/whatever and they were constantly backstabbing each other.

I am sure there are loads of other good ones too.
