BLIMEY! It's been FORTY YEARS THIS MONTH since the Galaxy's Greatest was launched on this little world by the mighty Tharg. Four decades is naught to our stoic Styrofoam-chuggin' Betelgeusean but to us humble fleshy few it means a great deal.
YES there's a party, YES there's a special issue, YES there's a commemorative beagle (you didn't get yours?) BUT LET'S GO ONE FURTHER AND HAVE THE MOTHER OF ALL ART COMPETITIONS.
The theme is celebration - stuff as many characters as you want into a celebratory context, or just have ol' Green bonce blowing out a single candle stuffed lovingly into a Droid's head crevice. EITHER WAY IT'S PARTY TIME.
There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner of course, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourites - all entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page, and also on the official 2000 AD Tumblr!
Rules for the art comp are these:
- It must fit the theme.
- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.
- All entries have to be constructed specifically for this competition - so nothing you've done for anything else.
- You can enter either here or by directly putting it on our FB wall here: https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp/
YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 26th OF FEBRUARY WHEN WE SHALL BLOW OUT EVERY SINGLE CANDLE ON THE VOTING CAKE
Don't think I'll be able to give this any more time, but if so I'll update with a (hopefully coloured) newer version.

Great start to the comp Woolly! Creative use of the 40 years too...it looks like Tharg was celebrating a little much. I wonder what Tharg drinks? (When Dredd pats Tharg down I bet he's carrying sugar too!)
There's a part of me that doesn't want you to colour that Woolly it looks SO good in black and white.
Wow, that is lovely, Woolly. Dredd is just perfect, the big boots and gloves, just wonderful.
That's just fantastic, Woolly! Great humour and absolutely lovely drawing - I agree with Colin's comment - it works perfectly well as a black and white piece. Nice work, sir..!
Thanks gents. Originally it was going to be a queue of classic characters waiting for the loo at the 40th bash, but soon realised id never finish that! So i did one set after the bash instead.
Tenuous link to the brief, i know...

I disagree, it captures eveything I love about 2000ad :) the humour and the attitude. Great work!
Excellent stuff Woolly :)
I'd say Tharg drinks JD. No?
To celebrate the 40th I brewed a strong Belgian Ale so I thought I should design a label for it for the art competition.

Very cool Albion! That answers the question as to what Tharg drinks

I'm going to have to break my self-imposed swearing ban to comment that
that is fucking brilliant. :-)
Is that a trappist robe?

Belgian or BEteLGeusIAN?
Oh for a 'like' or 'upvote' button.
My entry for the comp: "Lil Tharg".

lovely! 40 years young.
Tharg's own ale! Brilliant!
Lil' Tharg is just adorable :)
Thanks! I'm glad to know you think Lil Tharg is lovely!

My second entry for the comp, a homage to the great Harvey Kurtzman, creator of MAD magazine: "TALES CALCULATED TO THRILL YOU"

Okay, here's my offering. I was going to use the "40 years, creep!" line, but since that's already taken, I've gone for something a little less snappy.
I've included a version with fireworks which I thought was more celebratory and more fitting for the brief, but I've also included a version without fireworks, which I personally prefer... I'll leave you guys to decide which is the better of the two...
With fireworks:

All that's left for me to do now is to wish 2000ad a very Happy Birthday! ;)
Great, Andy! Reminds me a old Stones cover single (the first formation, with Brian Jones)! I like it!

Yes. The label is based on a Trappist Ale label.

I might have to use that in a future brew. ;)
Andy - Think I prefer the fireworks version myself, gives the background that extra bit of detail.
Also :o :o :o :o :o!
I'm reposting my second entry "2000 AD: TALES CALCULATED TO THRILL YOU" cause I did a small tiny change. By the way, it's also a homage to great Harvey Kurtzman, creator of MAD Magazine.

Wow great work Andy! Great selection of characters, and it looks like that took a lot of effort! :o I too prefer the one with fireworks - I find it adds depth to the picture as well.
Nice job Tulio_Vilela! Your style reminds me of old school EC and Gold Key comics.
Hi, Rogue Judge! Andy's work is great, he's a real artist! Thank you too much for write my style reminds you of old old school EC and Gold Key comics! You're very kind! Cheers!

Thank you, chaps - I appreciate the kind words and input. Fair enough if you think the version with fireworks is better - it fits the brief more, so that's fine.
Loving the retro-style humour of your work, Tulio..! :)
Thanks, Andy! I think that many 2000AD writers and artists were someway influenced by old EC comics and also by old Warren magazines (Creepy, Eerie etc).

Nice shout out from John Freeman - he gave me my very first commission in Doctor Who Magazine back in 1991..!
Great to see you back on the forum with a lovely bit of artwork, MrLongTheArtist..! :)
Cheers buddy. I'm not as familiar with Dredd as probably most of you, I only really got into it in 2012. So some of the themes I'd struggle to come up with an angle that'd make a good composition.
