Title: 45th anniversary online convention!
Post by: Richmond Clements on 16 February, 2022, 06:40:08 PM
Rebellion is delighted to announce The Galaxy's Greatest: 2000 AD at 45 – a star-studded online convention celebrating four and a half decades of the groundbreaking British comic!

Featuring celebrity fans and legendary creators, The Galaxy's Greatest will stream online and for free on 26 and 27 March on 2000 AD's social media channels and YouTube, and Rebellion's dedicated Twitch stream.

The two-day show will feature top flight guests on more than a dozen panels, all discussing the impact of 2000 AD on comics and culture over almost half a century, as well as announcements and new merchandise.

I would love to attend one of these events in person (but distance is a killer). Doing something online vs real-life event is not the same. I am planning to make a huge effort on the 50th to actually attend but that is still a few years away

I think this is great to see. Yes, there are benefits to real-world cons. But right now, we're still in the middle of a pandemic, regardless of what the Tories would have you say. And so an online thing makes sense, along with having the added benefit of being inclusive.

Being a total savage, I am unclear if there are going to be live events that I can tune into on some/all platforms, or if it'll be a bunhc of prerocred things I can then watch at my leisure later, or a bit of both?
Are we expecting a more detailed breakdown of which panels will happen at which dates/times, and how to find them?
I can handle YouTube, Twitch might be beyond me...

And the list of guests keep coming

https://2000ad.com/2000ad-45th-anniversary/ (https://2000ad.com/2000ad-45th-anniversary/)

This is only a proportion if the guests from all sorts of fields announced. MPs, journalists, comedians and more, Its a rich line-up of all sorts of folks that from my reading will inspire some very interesting and different panels...

...and there seems to be the problem. With each announcement a new guest who isn't a creator, Facebook (the Official site being my reference) just brings out the worst of fandom. Gatekeeping of the highest order. The conservative nature (small c) of some fans just flying to the fore. Its embarrassing. And of course it reaches its peak if one of those guests dares to not have a Y chromosome.

Now its fair to say it was probably best to ignore all this, but its so consistant, and so depressing I thought I'd raise it here, in the hope that by reflecting on it we can have the more sensible discussion?

There's been some fairly appalling attitudes aired in the comments on these announcements on the 2000AD FB page.  And you're absolutely right - they're especially prevalent around women guests at the event.

I think - for maybe the first time ever - the decision was taken to ban the worst offenders from the page.

You can probably listen to some of them whining/boasting about it in their regular 2000AD podcast.

I'm not sure of his relevance to 2000 AD, but he's got a lovely smile! Remember the good old days when 2000 AD wouldn't have had an organized convention because they were too busy throwing original art into a skip and pissing on it in a fun, anarchic way. The only way to save this debacle is to have Pat Mills take over by ushering all the guests into a large wicker-man and sacrificing them to the great worm! Like they used to do ... in the good old days.

Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Fighting Fantasy, is someone from the guest list I've actually met. He's a really lovely guy. I played him at Virtua Tennis during the opening of the videogame museum that at the time was in Nottingham. (I was that journalist who correctly identified Agent 4125 in a section on platform games, while every other hack there gave me a kind of withering look. Still, I was happy.)

As for the rest of it, the responses have been appalling to, notably, Desiree Burch and Stella Creasy. The latter turned into the usual suspects attempting to pivot to "because she's an MP", whereupon they all laid into Alex Sobel as well. It's all very sad, but then that mob seem hell-bent on bringing down shit on something they claim to have at least once loved.

To my mind, I'm finding the guest list really interesting. Usually, these things are a bunch of creators—and that's great. I enjoy hearing people talk about their craft, and we will get plenty of that here. But to widen it out to the aforementioned people and folks like Robin Ince and Ian Dunt should make for panels that give us something different too. I'm looking forward to it.

The joys of 'anti-social' media.  <sigh>.  Mind you, a quick scan of the megaverse page did raise a few smiles with some of the parodies posted.  Rod Hull and Emu ... one quite surprising Spanish one ... certainly didn't expect that one.

Be interested to find out why Creasy is included.  Wonder if she will be allowed to have her bairn with her.

Well, he designed the Judge Dredd board game (the one with the Brian Bolland box art and the Ian Gibson board), which gives him more of a connection than some of the guests.

In background shots of her place online, folks have remarked about the graphics novels in the background. IIRC, she at one point remarked that most of them were her husband's, but I also recall she's a bit of a self-professed geek.

Edit: Oops. I've been reminded elsewhere that this was Jess Phillips. Still, I'm happy to see Creasy on the panel anyway. The more people talking about the Prog and its worlds, the better, frankly.

I was hoping the notion I was joking would have been apparent from the rest of my post - but I am a hopeful fool!

I'm a big fan of Ian Livingstone - all the way from his Games Workshop days (back when it was more supportive of a wider hobby), through the Fighting Fantasy game-books and then collaborations with the House of Tharg.

Anyway, despite my thinking that the gatekeepers are glaikit gammon-merchants, I notice that Tharg (in his wisdom) is offering them an olive branch by inviting them along to the festivities to have their say:

I always like it when people with no direct input into 2000AD get invited to speak at these kinds of things. I mesan, what the hell is this forum, or indeed the 2000AD Facebook page, but a place where fans of the comic talk alot about why they like it? And this convention seems to be that but populated by people who one can expect to say things that are funny and insigthful because they have to be those two things on a professional level, even if it isn't as 2000AD creators.

For what it's worth, I happen to know one of the less famous names on the guest list (Kids author Louie Stowell) and can attest that she's as big a 2000Ad fan as any of them (although she's actually a bigger Oink! fan at heart :)). I lok forward to hearing her weigh in on whatever discussion she's part of!

Its this exactly. I do wonder if there is an element if subconsious jealousy amongst these that naysay the range of commentators present. i.e. "Well if they're just a fan why aren't I allowed to do it. Who are they to be ble to express their views over and above me, me, I, I.".

And the answer to that is these folks are in professions that requires them to think quick on their feet and / or communicate at good, engaging standard.

I mean I KNOW my opinions are worth 20 (I did an experiment to quantify it) of that lot however what use is that if when I'm sat on a panel with Mike McMahon (say) I just go.

"Oh like 2000ad is dead good and ace and what not... l love you Mike... I mean for your art and, like, that"

Yeah the sessions look aces and there is a really good variety AND all the guests make complete sense in the context of what they are discussing.

My only concern is I'm really busy this weekend and so won't get to watch much live. I'm hoping (kinda assuming) these will be available after the fact... hopefully...

That's one advantage that a virtual convention has over a real one. Back in ye olden days, if two panels you wanted to see at UKCAC or wherever were on at the same time, then you were out of luck.

Enjoying watching that pane (https://youtu.be/Ghnns818dEo)l now.

The modern idea (quite prolific in certain quarters) that all politicians are simply beneath our contempt, despite their personality or their affiliation - the idea that they're less than human (you know - the idea that they couldn't be both a politician and someone who likes comics at the same time) is so very narrow minded and dangerous - just so ignorant. Of course, at the extreme it leads to violence against them - which is just chaos.

Quite how we get "fans" who can't handle politics being linked to the comic, but who still hark back to a mythic golden era don't seem to realize that the comic's always been anti-authoritarian.

Relentlessly bullying the comic's creators, the comic's editorial staff, the comic's current output and any fans who don't live up to some ill-defined mythic ideals, and not being able to accept any sort of counter is authoritarian in its nature.

The nature of the online system is that people with Farcebook-shaped megaphones get to create and maintain a toxic narrative that skews away from most people's experience. In response to an argument like mine they'll say "oh, so we're not allowed to criticize anything?" - but that's not what I've actually said. You could use constructive criticism, and "it's shit without Wagner" just won't cut it.

Caught the politics one, the next Gen one, Mills one and was interrupted in the Wagner one due to dinner (try and catch this on the YouTube later). For the most part I enjoyed the discussions and took bits from all and hope to catch up on the others I've missed.

I'd be interested in what their total "views" end up being and what they would consider a success.

Hopefully catch a couple "live" tomorrow but it is supposed to be another nice day up here in Cal-Hab

The politic's one was good as well, though (as someone who voted for Creasy as deputy back in the far off Utopian past of 2015), I found her bewilderment by the lack of hope that there can be any meaningful change she sees in people as a bit odd, given it was the PLP who did their best to undermine that feeling over the last 6 years.. . but enough politics!

Be a bit harder to catch all of tomorrows as I wont be sat at  a desk all day (decorating), but we can catch up on these, yes?

Shall be able to listen to half of the panels tomorrow (there being the main panels and fringe panels) but it'll probably take me a good few weeks to find the time to catch up on all the bits I miss.

Caught the politics one, the next Gen one, Mills one and was interrupted in the Wagner one due to dinner (try and catch this on the YouTube later).
I was the same. I got hungry, and because it was the last panel, I wasn't sure how much longer there was left to run. Only about 10 minutes, as it turned out, but I didn't know that at the time.

Enjoyed the bits I saw today.

You'll never top an in person con, but rheres lots.to like about a format where you can watch on your own telly at home (or phone when you're waiting to drive your kids around for the whole weekend).  And being able to watch later is a winner too.

Did miss a bar though.

Thanks Rebellion!
Listened to lots of Saturday and appreciated the different voices. You'll hear that non-Squaxx lack basic knowledge and that even extends to hosts. There's a war on, so does it matter? Been saddened to see the online hostility recently as guests were announced.

John Wagner was the highlight, we're in the man's debt. Humble and witty, long may he keep scripting in whatever semi-retired way he can manage.

Such great news - those episodes of Spektor from the Carlos tribute are some of the best things i've read in the last five years.

I have watched a couple of these so good that there is a bit more diversity but we need more.

Couldn't see the fringe stream link today, so I'm on the main event - shall have a lot of catching up on the other streams (and re-watching of the ones I catch 'live') over the next few weeks!

Listening to the Wagner interview right now. It really is brilliant stuff. I imagine some of the more right wing readers will not like what they hear though.

One guy in the comments on YouTube today claims to be a long-time Strontium Dog fan and claims he's "always been a Kreeler at heart". Reading does not necessarily mean understanding.

You know what?
Today has been a great day, catching up on panels I missed yesterday, laughing along with names I've known from Tooth over the years and discovering new names to watch out for/haven't taken notice of before.
Thanks to everyone involved for an entertaining weekend!

Only seen a couple today, busy day (boy child football today - less time to watch than at a swimming gala!) but both next 45 years and Brink panels were excellent. The wonderful thing is the stuff still to watch, or to finish off mean I'm got entertainment for weeks!

Thanks again to all involved...

...but next time lets do it in person... I miss you folks!

I just watched the panel with Ben, Matt and the Kingsleys. That was really great, from Jason's talk of the importance of "low culture", to Matt's teasers of what's coming up in the Prog, to the talk about working with other parties. Good not only to get various reality checks (things are happening; things in TV/film can take years or even decades to come to fruition), but also to hear Rebellion's approach, with Jason noting that what matters is that this stuff is done well.

Now, I subscribe to the "the original is still on the shelf" mentality. But by the same token, I don't think it would benefit 2000 AD at all if pitches like those mentioned had come to fruition. People would instead think: "What's all the fuss about?" So, again, it feels in an ongoing basis like the Prog is in the right hands, and I feel grateful Rebellion ate up much of the UK's comics history, because these people aren't just owners—they're fans, custodians and creators.

Just loved the Brink panel with Dabnett and INJ Culbard.

It really provided a great insight to the strip and as I have just embarked on a complete re-read to complement series 5 in the Prog, was very timely.

The host was good - he mostly let Abnett and Culbard say what they felt needed to be said.

It's going to be hard deciding what to vote for when Brink comes up against Strontium Dog in Colin's tournament.  That's how highly I rate Brink.

I've now listened to about ten hours of the panels/interviews while I've been working and every single one has been thoroughly entertaining and well worth the listening time. Here's hoping MOLCH-R gets an extra oil ration for his efforts.

There's no LIKE button, but hear, hear! Great interviews - stunning line-up. For some reason I'm always surprised when Jason Kingsley reminds us that he's been a reader since prog 1.

Yes it's quite something that the owners are genuine fans. We should definitely give thanks for that.
