Help! / Any 1980's Eagle afficionados out there???
27 February, 2005, 07:49:34 PM
Can anyone help?

I recently bought a replacement copy of Eagle dated 1st October 1983 with a space spinner attached to the cover, exactly the same as the Space spinner given away with issue 1 of Tornado (ie not the space spinner given away with 15th October 1983). There was no mention of a free gift on the cover or in the comic. There is no mention of it in the previous week's issue. I assumed that someone had a space spinner lying around and sellotaped it to the cover of the comic to make it "more valuable".......until I looked at my original issue that I bought in 1983 which has sellotape residue on the front cover! Now I don't know whether it is a true free gift or a fake. There's no mention of a free gift in Steve Holland's book "The Fleetway Companion" but that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't genuine.

Can anyone help???

Off Topic / Anyone with musical talent here?
28 May, 2004, 04:42:33 PM
The "Sevenpenny nightmare" site dedicated to "Action" by Moose Harris that has been plugged on here before is very good. But has anybody taken the link to his own website? Did anybody else know that he played bass guitar in "New Model Army" for five years in the eighties and also played bass for The "Damned" with Dave Vanian and Rat Scabies????? He is also a member of this board. Anyone else a member on here with a musical history??? Here's my own credentials....I am to music what chocolate is to making teapots. Anyone else?

General / Spot the mistake......
10 April, 2004, 06:09:37 AM
Just perusing eBay for original artwork and came across this piece of art from Ace Trucking Co. It's from Prog 241 and is from the story "Hell's Pocket".

How long will it take you to spot the mistake here?.....

This arrived in an e-mail from "starwars.com" this morning:

"The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely."

This is great news as far as I'm concerned but what extras will the DVD's include? Will we see a director's cut of the director's cut?? There's not that much footage left which would add anything to "A New Hope", just a few odds and ends. Still, it's a must-have set.

Classifieds / Videos for sale: Spawn, Red Dwarf, X files
04 December, 2003, 12:11:32 AM
I'm having a clearout of old VHS videos and wondered if anyone wanted to take some off my hand before they end up at the local Oxfam. Most have only been watched a couple of times. They are as follows:

Spawn the animated series: The first twelve episodes which I believe was the whole of the first two series. Six videos for a tenner plus postage.

Red Dwarf remastered series 1 to 3 plus Red Dwarf VII Xtended which included the episodes "Tikka to ride", "Ouroboros" and "Duct soup". Seven videos for a tenner plus postage.

X files files 1 to 12 plus One Son, Closure, Biogenesis, Requiem, Existence, Deadalive and the X Files movie. That makes 19 videos for 25 quid plus postage.

Anybody interested then e-mail me through 2000ad online.

General / Prog 1 art on eBay
20 October, 2003, 07:08:48 PM
I was just browsing ebay looking at stuff I can't afford when I came across this page of Harlem Heroes art from prog 1. It's the inside back cover of Prog 1, and it's an important piece of tooth history. I hope the person who buys it understands the importance of that page.

22 September, 2003, 07:05:49 PM
Follow the link for a look at this book.It seems to be looking at the results of a research project into the audiences of "Judge Dredd". Not my usual bedtime reading but may be worth a browse.

A. John Cooper

Just watched Channel 4 news and they had a few storyboards "depicting" the fracas between Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham where he got the boot in the face. Who should have drawn them but none other than Judge Dredd and Johnny Red artist John Cooper! Nice to see he's still gigging. What next? MTV video music awards as drawn by Dave Gibbons?, Trooping the colour as seen through the eyes of Brian Bolland? The mind boggles!

Any tips on how to get around this problem? All the other pages on 2000ADonline seem to open ok, it's just entering the message board.

Thanks in advance.

General / Did Darkie's Mob benefit from "Action"?
11 March, 2003, 06:21:25 PM
One of the things that makes Darkie's Mob so good is that to me it has the same feel that the strips in "Action" had when they were first published, and I think that it's no coincidence that Darkie's Mob was first published in August 1976, right at the time Action was revving up with it's (in)famous strips. Darkie's Mob seems to have benefitted from getting the Action touch and gives it that harder, grittier feel of reality that comic strips at that time didn't have. I wonder whether there was a movement at the time to change the tone of the stories in Battle, as this harder-edged story was so popular in Action, and darkie's Mob may have been the pilot for this. Maybe Col. Marbles or Mills/Wagner would be able to shed light on this, but I'd be interested to know what the thinking behind this story was.

For those with a lot of spare cash, a piece of Mike McMahon's art for The Cursed Earth has gone up for sale on eBay. And to top it all it just happens to be a piece from the banned "Burger Wars" story arc! It's out of my price range but I'd love to have it on the wall of my study.

Suggestions / Carrying on the "Reprint Hookjaw" theme....
02 November, 2002, 05:44:51 PM
....if Rebellion could get the rights to the material why not reprint hookjaw or Death Game 1999 in the Meg with the completed pages which should have been in the banned episodes. Better still, get some of the old writers/artists to finish off the series without the watered down versions that came out in the relaunch of Action. Tom Tully used to write Death Game 1999 and Pat Mills wrote Hookjaw for a while. If Massimo Bellardinelli is truly in "the Great Studio in the Sky" then that would be a blow but Ian Gibson drew the first episode of "Death Game" and Ramon Sola did some great Hookjaw.

Maybe I'm taking this "reminiscence therapy" too far but I for one would love to see these series finished off in the Meg as they were intended. Maybe new material wouldn't capture the same feelings I had when I originally read these stories, time has moved on after all. But I still get a thrill thinking about reading hookjaw as a child and seeing Rick Mason's head bitten clean off before being held up in front of the owner of the holiday island. That's how I started reading comics and I am eternally grateful to Action for that.

Off Topic / FAO Col. Marbles

I'm looking for some help regarding a copy of Battle I bought recently. It's a free issue of Battle and Action Force without a date or any indication of how you could get hold of this issue. By using the Charley's War website I've identified the Charlie's War strip and believe it may be from 8 october 1983 but could you confirm this? Also, was this copy given away in the shops or with other IPC publications? Any help in solving this would be greatly recieved.

ps Love your Battle website.

Help! / Question for Wake
27 September, 2002, 05:11:02 AM
Dear Wake,

Did I see a link on here at some time to a list of reprint publications, possibly the US reprints, which contained strips which hadn't seen publication in either 2000AD, the Meg, or any of the specials/annuals over the years. If there is such a list, can you post the link to it please.

Much appreciated.

Prog / Nice touch in Rogue Trooper
24 July, 2002, 03:43:58 AM
Nice to see the original Rogue Trooper back in action. Nice touch in the final panel where Rogue is standing in front of his vehicle with "Thank God it's not Friday" written on the track guard. I for one say "Amen!" to the end of Friday, I never did get my head around the continuity problems and felt it was just being spun out too damn long.

Also, I think Staz Johnson really caught the feel of the early episodes of Rogue and there's more than a touch of Dave Gibbons in his panels. Makes me feel warm inside!

General / Freebie miniatures
20 July, 2002, 05:09:15 PM
Imagine how pleased I was to recieve a parcel this morning...especially when I hadn't expected one! It seems a company from Nottingham is sending out freebie 2000AD miniatures to all subscribers, and they're very good. The box included Judge Dredd, Mean Machine, Johnny Alpha and what looks like Slaine, although I can't tell for sure as I haven't opened the box! They plan "to cover the whole breadth of characters from the history of 2000AD past and present".

I can't say I'm actually into these little figures but I'm impressed by the apparent quality and I think they look better than the 2000AD Citadel miniatures. Anybody else get their freebie through today?
