Quote from: Le Fink on 21 May, 2024, 05:37:18 PMA snap from the Vertigo edition for the heck of it. The paper quality is so-so but the repro is OK.

It's the so-so paper quality that stops the colours from over-saturating — I think that looks great, TBH!

Ah! Interesting. I was a bit disappointed with the rough paper but I suppose it's quite similar to the original comic paper? So it's hopefully going to look close to as was original intended. Anyway, it's fine to look at, which is the main thing.

The Meg seems a very odd home for all-ages. I'd be happy to see those strips you mentioned continue in tooth.

There are arguably 3 all-ages strips running in tooth at the moment. Dredd, with its Stephen King like young protagonists (hey, I said arguably, c'mon), the 3riller, and Intestinauts. All top tales as far as I'm concerned. All-ages is fine if it's done well.

Quote from: Max Headroom on 21 May, 2024, 04:55:41 PMI have it on good authority, having liaised with the Rebellion team, that although this book will follow the Eagle Comics' colouring scheme, it will be tweaked so that the page ratio issues are addressed. I am reasonably reassured and will be going ahead with this purchase.

Let us know what you think. The colours shown in the screenshots in this thread put me off rather! I think B&W Carlos art should take colour quite well so I'd love to see it re-coloured using a more modern approach. Not enough money in it I suppose, shame.

I restarted the prog after the first Hope story, so missed the original setup and never really got on with it, particularly the last couple of chapters. I've taken a punt and got this volume and glad I did. The first story which (obviously) sets everything up is very good, so hopefully this will make a big difference. The book is a bit of a looker, the black and white cover looks classy and the art looks good throughout.

I really liked the black, white and red covers done for the Mega Collection. It was a clever concept. The colour covers for the Ultimate are nice enough but don't quite pop in the same way. For me, anyway!

Quote from: Fortnight on 21 May, 2024, 09:53:46 AMAs someone relatively unread in comics, but trying to catch up (despite being beset by long delays due to renovations taking an insufferably and inordinately long time to get finished), and who has read almost all the Moore Swamp Thing now, from cold, without having read anything from before or after that run, and the only exposure to Swamp Thing before that being the 80s movie, I have to say I don't really recognise what I have read of it from these descriptions all that much!

Maybe it's because I've read so little of comics (compared to you vets), or because I approached it without any particular reverence for Moore. I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've read so far, but didn't think the incidental characters were neglected, unlikeable, or irritating. I also it doesn't really feel much like a superhero story, despite some of those old trouts turning up.

Perhaps I should also say that I'm reading the Absolute editions, and I'm not forcing myself to keep reading when I get tired - I just pick it up again later. I'll definitely be re-reading them, too, at some point.
Pretty much how I came to it, apart from the edition, and how I responded to it too. I've given it a couple of re-reads since, but the first read was the most enjoyable for me. The Absolute editions somewhat controversially recolour the run IIRC, I've not seen it for comparison myself.

I came to Moore's Swamp Thing very late, maybe 10-15 years ago, via this collection (on the left):

And later on, picked up the collected early comics that went up to the start of the Moore series, shown on the right.

So I read the Moore series more or less continuously, with minimal breaks between the books. I'd say the first four books are well worth a look, although it did tale off a bit for me after the climax of the American Gothic arc. I wasn't that taken by the later sci-fi pivot and move to outer space. In general though I thought it was a really good read and would certainly include it in my list of top comics.

The early comics I read just to see what happened before Moore took the reins. They are rather dated and I found them a bit of a slog to get through. Not essential but nice to get the background.

It is a bit meandering- nothing like as self contained as say V for Vendetta- but that's Ok as there is so much to see. He does cover a lot of ground.

Looks good Nightbook. Really got the toughness coming through. I wouldn't want to mess with your Armitage!

Prog / Re: Prog 2383: Blood Work

I love Brink!

Not sure about Halo Jones. I need a screen grab with a circle on it!

I like the way Bridget's hair is wafting about in zero-G, but Dougie's got that tight 'fro. Nice attention to detail. And people are just... floating around. I'm surprised Bridge hasn't seen gravity slums before on other habs. Obviously money is a still a thing on the Brink - presumably food isn't provided for free, in general? There must be a relief effort for all these homeless people. Presumably some population numbers could be derived from that?

Quote from: Funt Solo on 18 May, 2024, 04:35:20 PMReading the digital prog here, and Intestinauts is a struggle. A lot of the lettering is difficult to read. At 100%, the entire comic double-page spread can be viewed on my big monitor, and text is usually legible. Intestinauts needs double-magnification to read, because the lettering on the call-outs and building-alarm-voices is ... not good.

I don't know much about lettering, but aren't those I's just not really fit for purpose?

The red-on-white ones are not easy to read in the hard copy either. The 'I's are distinct at least.

The green-on-black ones are easier to make out. The text is still too narrow and tight for comfort though.

Quote from: Funt Solo on 14 May, 2024, 06:36:23 PMI did my best to collate all the Corann and Lesley Ryan stories.

I will check that out, thanks

Quote from: Jade Falcon on 12 May, 2024, 04:28:20 PM...  Anderson.  Well I enjoyed the first half of the book, the Karyn stories seemed written a bit chaotically though I did like the Hotdog run story as well.  ...
That Hotdog Run story reads really well collected - it didn't click at the time (The gap between Meg issues doesn't help). I didn't realise Corann and Lesley are the twins from the classic Grant / Ransom era 'Triad' story that I read when I subscribed to the prog so long ago. Top callbacking. The book is a decent collection all round. Nice to see some strip art from Roach and Robinson.

Apologies – I got carried away. I forgot that you were ill and delicate and thus less likely to appreciate misplaced frivolity.
It is highly unlikely that Hachette warehouse staff are even now surrounding your house with crudely fashioned weapons in their hands.
Highly unlikely.
Rest easy and get well soon.

 :D

This made me laugh, which was much needed, thank you!
