Title: 2000AD COVER OF THE YEAR VOTE 2015.
Post by: Pete Wells on 04 January, 2016, 09:23:02 PM
Yes, it's very late and I apologise profusely, but finally here is the annual 2000AD cover of the year vote. You can see all of the covers here http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2018 (http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2018),

here http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2038 (http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2038)

and here http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2058 (http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1946&offset=2058). A big thanks to Eamonn for sending those links.

You can see bigger, 'clean' versions of most of the covers on my blog (http://2000adcovers.blogspot.co.uk/), as well as artist commentaries for each one - not bad eh?

So, I'd like you to clearly list your THREE favourites, in order. THREE points will be awarded to your fave, TWO points for second and ONE point for third. Please try and be explicit with this as each year someone messes it up - speaking of messing up, I will try not to cock up the maths up this year!

The closing date is midnight on SATURDAY 16TH JANUARY 2016...

A Meg thread will be along shortly...

Cheers, Pete. As part of the long tradition of cocking this up, I initially only clicked on the 2nd and 3rd of those links before choosing winners. I remember thinking making a decision was easier than usual ...

My ONE POINT goes to 1915 (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nX5PRAq0tus/VMnk1roqCOI/AAAAAAAALFQ/dPbtrvZLVE4/s1600/1915-cover1.jpg), Greg Staples's atmospheric dark judges group portrait from January. The incredible 3D effect of Death's grasping claw overcomes my disgust at the pro-ana porn of Mortis and Sidney's thigh gaps.

My TWO POINTS go to 1936 (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ch_bnnZirdk/VYMc1zGBfTI/AAAAAAAAPIQ/3_ZTkuZWkJI/s1600/2000%2BAD%2BProg%2B1936-1.jpg), Tiernen Trevallion's line study of Harry Absalom's scrotum. It's blue and teal cos I like the way it feel.

My THREE POINTS go to 1957 (http://i2.wp.com/downthetubes.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/2000AD-1957.jpg), Jake Lynch's dynamic, insanely detailed, sprawling, gore soaked, double page distillation of every Cursed Earth adventure into a single composition.

Feels insane not to be voting for Henry Flint's Ranson-like rendering of Dredd's mystery horse, the technique perfectly capturing the uncertain reality of the narrative device in Black Bess's clothing, or Jake Lynch's bold, iconic barbequed Dredd cover, but that's how strong this year's field was. The use of colour and composition in my final three choices gave them the edge, with the graphic design sensibility of Trevallion and the dynamism and sheer exuberance of Lynch triumphing over Staples's dutch tilt and unparallelled quality of finish.

Very difficult this year. I could easily pick 10 really great covers, no problem.

1st = Prog 1925 Simon Davis, Slaine "Force of Nature" = 3 points
2nd = Prog 1920 Dylan Teague "Shooting from the Lip" = 2 points
3rd = Prog 1915 Greg Staples "Fiends Reunited" = 1 point

Very hard to choose. I thought I knew what to go for but ended up going for a different three.

1 point   prog 1913

2 points  prog 1920

3 points  prog 1946

Too many honorable mentions to mention, but in a year where we have covers from Bolland, Fabry and Ian Kennedy its a classic year.

1st - Prog 1936 Absalom "Damnation Army" by Tiernen Trevallion
What an absolutely cracking cover, and yes it abides by the "Blue and Orange" poster style thats dominated for a while now but by golly gosh it's a sublime piece of art, so much so I have a print out of it pinned to my work space. It's inspirational stuff, alright.

2nd - Prog 1961 Judge Dredd"Welcome to your future"  by Ian Kennedy
What a surprise this was, and absolutely sublime piece of art by one of the comics most adored name's, quite mesmerisingly good and a classic depiction of Mega-City 1's cityscape.

3rd - Prog 1947 "Dark Stars Rising" by Dave Kendell
Everything about this is just ace. Absolutely love it, and a beautiful set of redesigns for the DJ's as well.

This was a tough year to pick from, but hat's off to all artists who provided covers this year for the tooth!

1. 1915 A brilliant homage to Bolland's Dark Judges cover.
2. 1952 Leigh Gallagher's superb zombie puppet show
3. 1947. Henry Flint's iconic image of Dreddie and Neddie.

1st place goes to prog 1947 (It's Dredd on a Drokking Horse whats not to love)

2nd place goes to prog 1941 (this one was tough loved both Absolom covers but this one had great use of complimentary colours so it just one out)

3rd place for me is prog 1913 (It's just a cool concept and pulled off so well especially those glowing eyes)

1st (3pts) - Prog 1941, Tiernen Trevallion. I remember thinking when this one came out it would likely be my vote for cover of the year. Stands out a mile, both in style and content. It's not been surpassed in 2015.
2nd (2pts) - Prog 1951, Rufus Dayglo
3rd (1pt) -  Prog 1912, Paul J. Holden - I'm not usually big on covers that are just people's faces (though Tharg seems to be) but this one's very stylish.

Tough to choose, and interesting seeing them all as thumbnails which really emphasises which covers had punch.

1. 1925
2. 1915
3. 1946

I also loved Henry Flint's cover to prog 1947. He doesn't get given enough covers for my liking. Actually I'd happily see the whole prog drawn by him.

01. 1941 - Tiernen Trevallion. Absolutely adore this. The way it manages to evoke a sense of dread from a quiet story-related moment is quite something. And it has a funny duck. Like somebody else said, this has been my cover of the year since the minute I saw it.

02. 1944 - Cliff Robinson. My real second favourite is Tiernen's other Absalom cover, but I've decided to be harsh about this. Again, this is a cover which conveys something key to the story inside and it was really nice to see Cliff unleashing his lovely details on something other than Dredd.

03. 1950 - Chris Burnham. Clever, effective, wonderfully implemented. I'm a big fan of the lad so I hope Tharg is able to get some more out of him next year.

HM: Leigh's 1952 was a lovely bit of work, adapting the vague theme of a number of the older Defoe covers and I loved the colour placement in Mark Harrison's 1928 effort.

Here's my three 'penneth...

1) 1941 - Tiernen Trevallion: Love everything about this. The simplistic and yet powerful images (the pond!), the machiner/park/contrast/colours and Old Harry ...having a nose bag in't park is just champion.

2) 1951 - Old school all the way & just beats McCarthy's Bad Co cover for daftness & the fact that 2000AD can still do this well and get away with it in 2015, 30 years after the 1st Bad Co, t'warms the cockles...

3) 1945 - That's a hell of a Dredd cover. None of your stock 'Joe on a bike' hum-drum that seemed to be the thing in 2015. This is Dredd the man, burnt & beaten but not broken. It's a stunning rendition & deserves to win really if it were not for the marvellous Mr Trevallion...

Cheers

1st) Prog 1934 by Simon Davis. For me, one of the most dynamic Slaine covers in decades. Loved it.
2nd) Prog 1915 by Greg Staples. The standard of excellence is maintained with 0.00% deviation.
3rd) Prog 1924 by Brain Bolland. I just couldn't not vote for it.

HM- Prog 1949 by Dave Kendall. One of the most memorable series in 2015, and a great cover.

1. 1961. Of significance for me as Ian Kennedy drew the cover of my first issue of 2000AD, the Sci-Fi special in 1984. This new cover is a thing of beauty, I'd put it on the wall if I didn't think Mrs Snazz might not be keen.

2. 1949. Dave Kendall's art on that whole series was magnificent and this is as iconic a picture of Sidney as you could wish for.

3. 1947. Dredd on a horse!Wait, run that by me again?

1st - 1947 - Flintastic Dredd on horseback
2nd - 1929 - Ryan Brown's realistic looking Dredd.  Love the smoke rising over the logo.
3rd - 1945 - Jake Lynch's sizzling Dredd (though... his right hand is clenched but the shadow looks as though his hand is open).

Honourable mentions to -
1926 - Flint's precision + colourful and comicy.  It's good to be reminded this is the comic from my childhood, still around!  It may have grown up but it's great to see hints of the boy in the man.
1959 - Ditto Cliff Robinson's "Beat Cop".
1927 - Good to see the Stix brothers on the cover.

Looking through the gallery makes me think (yet again) that only Carlos can draw the definitive Johnny Alpha, or Tharg.  (Every other Tharg looks wrong to me, like when they change the actor playing Ronald McDonald in the TV commercials... "That's not the shape of his face!  That's not his voice!  Who is this imposter?  Why is everyone carrying on like nothing is different?!?")

Okay! My pick (which was soooooooooooooooo frigging hard - I would have had 13 honourable mentions!)

First place for me was Prog 1959 by Cliff Robinson & Dylan Teague: Once again, Cliff gives us a perfectly executed (no pun intended) cover that really gets the story across. It's so relevant too, with the increase on police scrutiny this year. My only quibble is the retro phone, it looks old by today's standards, never mind one hundred and odd years in the future!

Second place is 1957 Jake Lynch: Jake's covers have all been excellent this year but this one is crazy! It perfectly sums up Mega-City madness and I'm sure that, of the 1% of cits that work, this is what their typical commute looks like!3 1929 Ryan Brown: I'm a huge fan of Ryan's work and he's had some fantastic covers this year. This one exudes cool and is as photorealistic as we could hope for. Already an iconic image that is (deservedly) popping up everywhere. Fab!

Third is 1929 by Ryan Brown: I'm a huge fan of Ryan's work and he's had some fantastic covers this year. This one exudes cool and is as photorealistic as we could hope for. Already an iconic image that is (deservedly) popping up everywhere. Fab!

Thanks for voting everyone, one more week left!

2nd Place: 1915. Can't go wrong with some classic Death and pals

3rd Place: 1920. Less striking that '36, and divisive at the time, but as a cover it's what you want. A woman with a gun in her mouth? If I was 8, I'd be hooked.

1st: 1945, Jake Lynch. A welcome callback to McMahon's iconic Cursed Earth cover, but still uniquely Lynch. I loved Jake's action-packed wraparound for 1957 too.

2nd: 1948, Dave Taylor. Great linework and beautiful, moody colours.

3rd: 1956, Jon Davis-Hunt. Perfectly observed poses - making a dynamic image out of such relaxed figures takes real class.

And honourable mentions to the following...

1946: Dave Kendall
1947: Henry Flint
1950: Chris Burnham & Nathan Fairburn
1915: Greg Staples
1919: John Higgins
1924: Brian Bolland
1959: Cliff Robinson
1960: Brendan McCarthy
1961: Ian Kennedy
1961 - Diamond Exclusive: Simon Bisley (not one of his best, admittedly, but it grows on you)

When names like those don't make your top three, you know it's been a good year!

1st: #1945 The Long Walk by Jake Lynch A no brainer for me. Old style 2000AD grit produced with modern tools. Reminds me of some of the old classics from way back such as 'The Cursed Earth will not break me' and 'Hot digital dog!'. I could've easily included more Jake Lynch in this top three but I'm only giving one vote per artist. Hope Tharg gives Jake some painted strip work. (Not that sure about the type over the image though but where else could they put it?)

2nd: #1936 Damnation Army by Tiernen Trevallion Great design and facial expression. Bit of an Alfredo Alcala thing going on there.

3rd: #1926 Old Wounds by Henry Flint I like the simplicity and of course it's by the Judge Dredd artist. Close call between this and 'Riders on the Storm' but I wasn't that keen on the colours of the horsey cover.
