Title: Rescued comics and what should a comics-noob do with 'em?
Post by: Fortnight on 16 December, 2023, 09:27:05 PM
First off, apologies for the huge post. I have tried, but I'm unable to be concise and always end up waffling on at length. Just like this sentence here. It's not necessary, so why am I writing it? And yet I am writing it, and what's more, you're reading it. Grab a cuppa and a seat!

As I wrote in another thread, I have wound up owning a bunch of boxes of comics ear-marked for the skip after being flood-damaged. I've had these for many years now, and whilst I cleaned them up, had a superficial stock-take, and re-boxed them at the time, it's only in the last year or so that I have really sorted through them properly to work out what I've got, and what might be worth keeping and reading.

I know very little about most of these titles as I've not been back into comics all that long, beyond a handful of anthology titles that I grew up with.

There are lots of damages, but also loads that are undamaged (by the flood, anyway, and are presumably in more or less the same condition they were in when they went into the boxes - not always mint, and probably not much use to a collector, but fine for a reader).

I started a spreadsheet at the end of last year and it took about 6 months on and off to go through approx 3000 comics and work out what they all were and group them into series (as far as I could work out from information online). It's all very confusing.

There are plenty that appear to be a full run of a title, a complete short series, or a one-shot. Amongst these there are comics that I'm curious about enough to try reading, but also plenty that I've no idea if they're any good or not. I don't know which ones are worth reading!

In addition to that, there are also loads that are incomplete. These ones might be worth finding fills for, but, again, I don't know! (In fact I have already filled a fair number of series that looked interesting when I found issues for pennies here and there, so really this list is an amalgamation of the original rescues and fills, but I haven't kept a record of which are my own purchases.)

A small number I've read already, and some of the well-known ones I'll certainly read eventually (V for Vendetta, From Hell). Already on the list of keepers is Shade (1990) thanks to Colin YNWA who also is responsible for me starting this thread (ably assisted by BadlyDrawnKano)

There are also titles that I'm pretty sure I don't care about. I don't like cartoon-style art, and this, for me, includes manga, and I don't much like the mainstays of the superhero genre (Superman, Spider-man, the Hulk, the Flash, Justice League, etc). Also not keen on Westerns. Unless there are any remarkable runs recommended to me to fill, I may not bother with those. However, I won't discount anyone's heartfelt recommendation!

I need help deciding what to keep, what to fill, and what to read!

So the questions I have are things like:
Is it any good?
Is it more-or-less a stand-alone story that can be read in isolation?
Do I *need* any fore-knowledge before I tackle it? ie, anything I should get/read first? and would needing that make it less worth buying fills?
Would it benefit from reading something else first?
Would it be better *not* to read previous related series?
How big a rabbit hole will it take me down?
Can I jump in after issue #1 or jump out before the run is done? Or do I need to get all the missing issues to be able to read it?
Would it be better to pick up TPBs or try to get fills? Cost and availability of TPBs, HCs and fill-issues is obviously a factor in this too.

If anyone fancies replying, no-one needs to cover every one in one reply, in fact, it might be interesting to get a longer take on some titles if it's warranted.

I'll post the list in the next post, assuming it'll all fit in one post. Make y'browser real wide now.

Black lines are series that I think are complete, or one-shots.
Green lines are titles that I've read (not many yet from this bunch of rescued comics)
Blue lines are series that are missing issues.
Red lines are ones with issues damaged beyond hope of reading. The quantity that I've stated I have includes the damages. (Other issues are damaged within some titles but are still readable and I've not noted those here.)

Okay not gone through this in detail yet but some immediately jump out and I'll tackle the remaining post asap (this is just the first - but from a very quick scan there's good stuff in the others too)

Animal - dependent on the issues they could be the brilliant Morrison run (issues 1 -26).

Angela is Neil Gaiman - not read it but think folks like that one.

Astro City gets bigged up by a lot of folks

Bacchus - Is quite superb

Bone amazing

Cerebus - Well the first 200 issues (some say 150) are quite astonishingly good

Concrete - absolutely top

There is going to be some really good stuff in the Cheval Noir (US anthology reprint of French (typically) meterial) and Dark Horse Presents - US Anthology with some very good stuff including Concrete and Bacchus material.

Doom Patrol - I'm going to guess you have the Morrison run there 19-60ish I'm not the biggest fan (though I love other Grant Morrison) but some folks will say its his best work.

Shame you don't have more Flaming Carrot.

Some of the stuff about will be VERY high in my top 100!

This is going to be fun.

Any question about any specifics that catch your imagination and just ask. I'll be back tomorrow for some more of this!

Animal Man is a bit all over the place. I have #s 1, 2, 7-32, 62-68, 84, 87-89
with #16 has had some rat nibblin' at it I think. They all need a good wipe with a clean cloth.

Doom Patrol I have #s 5, 14-18, 19-26, 31-63, 64-87
with #85 being a bit more ropey than the others but readable.

Cerebus has lots damaged, but most still readable, but very few consecutive issues whether damaged or not. I'd more or less decided to get TPBs of that if it was worth reading. And it seem that it may be :)

I like the look of The Metabarons (after having looked at only the nice pictures - no reading), so I was curious about that one.

Ohhh so you have most the Morrison run well worth filling the gaps - though 5 can get pricey, widely considered one of the great comics. Video on issue 5 (https://youtu.be/LeVSIUnp7UU?si=8O_8yY98IKaAQaJu) that gives you a good sense of the run as a whole.

So you have the majority of the Morrison run and its defo worth trying as lots of folks LOVE it.

Be aware Cerebus gets very problematic as Dave Sim the creator had something of a breakdown and has some very unpleasent (to say the least) views. Which wash into the series from issue 186 onwards. My fav YouTube channel Strange Brain Parts (https://youtu.be/-e0okB5imP4?si=QiW1bIMT6dGpyIfX) has a really good summary - and individual videos for the first 7 or so books or so.

I've not read Metabarons beyond the first couple of volumes. I didn't get on with it but I know it has fans in these parts.

Okay so second chunk of the list then.

I'm a big fan of ther 1987 Wally West Flash run. Its one of my favourite mainstream superhero runs BUT if mainstream superhero comics aren't your bag. If you pop the issues up I can suggest some to have a go with to see if you'll like what you have.

I really enjoyed For a few troubles more back in the day but not read it for years. Early Ennis take on the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland.

From Hell is considered by many as Alan Moore, say no more!

Hate is brilliant and well worth tracking down the missing issues.

Hellblazer might be worth listing the issues you have to see what runs you have there.

Folks are very keen on the Justice League (1-6) 1987 which runs straight into Justice League International (1987) then into those Justice League America (1989) comics you have. Stop at 60 when it changes creative teams ans direction significently. Its the same run. Very popular series that defies the typical DC comics style by being very funny. I'm not the biggest fan but it works for so many folks worth trying.

Liberty Meadows - love those stories though maybe a little dated now? Might be worth just dipping in as reprints of a comic strip. There a load on that second list that I'd mention but you don't have enough yet and there's so much good reading in what you have, or just need a bit of to keep you going for a while.

I don't have a problem hearing or reading other people's views, even if they don't align with mine. The way I see it, so much that is wrong in society is its inability to tolerate those who think differently. Everyone likes to sit in their own thought bubble and be comfortable, and when they come across ideas that aren't what they're used to hearing they either close down or strike out, and only sometimes figuratively speaking.

The more different views or perspectives that are listened to honestly, the more they will be considered and factored in to a more rounded opinion of the world and that there humanity that's in it. If I don't listen to an alternate viewpoint, I can't formulate a cogent response to it if it's troubling, and so any argument I have against it is going to sound flat and worthless as a response. Screaming "You're just like Trump!" or "Effing wokeflake" is not going to make anyone think you've got a great point.

I'll hear anyone's ideas regardless of how distasteful I think it might be, because somewhere at the core of it there might be a kernel of a valid point, or a valid grievance.

After all, how would I know if my own opinions are themselves problematic, or outright wrong, until I properly consider all alternate viewpoints?

Of course, bad ideas are bad, but you won't know it unless you listen, and can't even start to think differently unless you're being heard yourself.

This is true from whatever socio-political place you stand. Left or right, or somewhere else.

Well, that got serious quick. So...

Justice League and the various titles that have similar names or seem to be the same characters is where I got very confused. I couldn't work out what things belonged together, where things started, and whether or not they required me to have read stuff before the material I've got. At a certain point I just figuratively waved my hand and hoped it would go away.

From what you describe I appear to have Justice League (1987) - all #1 - #6, then Justice League International (1987) continuing into #7 to #25 (but missing #8), and then Justice League America (1989) continuing #26 to #70, then 72-75. "Missing #0" whatever that means.

So I seem to be missing only #8 from that recommended run. Yay. Should be an easy fill. And then I can throw the rest of the confusing lot in the bin! :D (not really)

I had the same confusing issue with LEGION and the other titles which looked to have similar titles.

Bloody comics.

I second Colin's comment on Dark Horse Presents - a great (always reprint?) anthology comic.

I've read a few of these and so I'll do a few posts of some thoughts if no-one else does!

You might not like his politics, but Frank Miller wrote and drew some great comics. Robocop vs Terminator when I read it 30 odd years ago was frikkin' awesome and can be read standalone. The first Sin City, with Marv as the main character, was an incredible comic. The follow ups you've listed not as good IMO, but very much worth a read, and probably don't need the first one to have been read (but seek it out). Martha Washington also very enjoyable and drawn by the one and only Dave Gibbons. Give me liberty is the one to start with.

Yeah that Justice League stuff is just one lomng run with the title changing. If they have Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis of the cover its all one ruin. Most drawn by Kevin Maguire with Adam Hughes taking over after a bit. Their run ends with 60 and it becomes just standard superhero stuff again.

DeMatteis and Giffen also write the early Justice League Europe run that spins out of that series. I know less about that but figure if you like the JLI stuff you might as well check that out as well. Figure if you keep an eye on the editorial / letters pages you'll see when Justice League Europe starts in relation to the JLI run, I reckon it will be flagged pretty clearly in story too.

As for The Flash you have the complete Mike Baron run 1 - 14. Then Williams Messner-Loebs takes over 15-61 - my favourite run of this series. Mark Waid takes over and and you have most of his first stint (joined by Brian Augustyn) up to 129. I mean if you are still going at that point complete the gaps and keep going. It'll cost you bobbins to be honest.

If you want to sample just read issues 45-47. Its a Gorilla Grodd story I absolutely love. The art is pretty average but this is one of my absolute favourite long form Superhero runs (they whole 225ish issues of the 1987 series). We can talk about that more if you try and like it.

For Hellblazer you got the stuff I know. The Jamie Delano beginning of the run is very well regarded and I really enjoyed it back in the day. It spins out of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and has a similar tone. There's some fill in issues here and ther (all pretty good) after that and then with issue 41 Garth Ennis takes over for a brilliant run (as I remember it - I must get that run again) up to 83. I dropped out just before the end. Not cos it wasn't good, it was one of the last comics I got before my Wilderness Years when I was too busy having fun to afford comics.

I'd say all three of these are worth a go. If you enjoy Shade start with Hellblazer. But if you fancy something different shift to one of those two superhero titles.

I'll try to find time to look at the next chunk tomorrow. You have some great comics here though!
Title: Re: Rescued comics and what should a comics-noob do with 'em?

So onto the next chunk.

I'm not at all the biggest Lobo fan but that first mini from 1990 is notable for the Simon Bisley art (his first in US comics?). If you get on with that I think you pretty much have all the initial stuff covered that you need.

Straight after that you have Luther Arkwright and that is quite brilliant - bear with it the first issue or two can be a challenging read as the story comes together. The 1987 Valkyrie Press 9 issues is all you need to read for the first story. I believe the 1990 Dark Horse series just reprints that and Arkeology is nice back matter but not directly part of the story.

There are two subsequent stories worth getting if you get on with the first that you have but they are easy enough to pick up, see if you like the Valkyrie stuff and you're good to go.

Miracleman is for most premium Alan Moore and that Eclipse series is all you need and you should defo check them out. If you don't like them a nice run of Miracleman will get decent money (not retiring money but it will shift) in the aftermarket!

Next Men is a John Bynre creator owned that gets decent press. You have all you need there if it tickles your fancy I've not really read it but might be interesting.

Sandman goes without saying and as you have all the series replace Alan Moore with Neil Gaiman and just see what I said for Miracleman really!

Scarab is a John Smith comic I've not read for some reason - just get around to it - and I believe is well liked. If you like John Smith's stuff in 2000ad you should check that out, as I should!

Shade we've talked about elsehwere.

If those Sin City comics look interesting to you you have the 2nd and 3rd arcs, might be worth picking up The Hard Goodbye in trade as its the first story BUT you might have it in the Dark Horse Presents comics. It first appeared in the nice big 5th Anniverary issue and then issues 51-62 of the regular series. Very popular with some folks.

Lots of stuff i that again its a shame you haven't got more of. Mage, Madman, Murder me Dead all stand out but you have quite enough to keep you busy before tracking down more stuff!

Thanks for all the comments so far Le Fink & Colin, this is exactly the sort of stuff I need to know! It'll help me know what to keep around to fill as time goes by, or put into long-term storage to save space - or even give away if I know for sure I don't want some comics.

Quote from: Le Fink on 17 December, 2023, 08:29:40 PMI second Colin's comment on Dark Horse Presents - a great (always reprint?) anthology comic.

It'd be good to know more about specific issues, since I seem to have quite a few and no clue about them. Are they episodic anthologies? As in with stories that span across more than one issue, or does 1 issue always contain a whole story?

Quote from: Le Fink on 17 December, 2023, 08:29:40 PMThe first Sin City, with Marv as the main character, was an incredible comic
Oh... well I just answered my own question I just asked. I clicked my own link for the 2nd Sin City volume, followed the link there to the first and read that it was compiled from Dark Horse Presents 51-62  (which I have)

DHP issues I have are: 1, 43-45, 51-91, 96-100.0-100.3, 101-112, 132
with 3 damages somewhere after #100, for some reason I didn't record which ones.

This is one that I'd decided I was definitely going to read as the art looks brilliant, and I think I'd already worked out that the Dark Horse issues were just reprints of the Valkyrie Press ones (although the Dark Horse ones look to be on better paper).

After having noted the author I'd also decided to read this, even though I'm never truly inspired to read unknown material of the superhero genre. A recommendation is all I need to persuade me to try :)

I'm aware how widely regarded Alan Moore is in the comics world. I'm currently reading the Absolute editions of Swamp Thing (just started volume 3) which I picked up because they seemed like a decent price reduction from their retail price and I felt like treating myself :D

He's also quite a funny fellow. If anyone hasn't heard the BBC radio episode of Chain Reaction where he interviews Brian Eno, it's well worth checking out.

It was a bit of a mix. I think DHP was all new material that often went on to be reprinted. Unlike 2000ad there weren't loads of long ongoing series. Things were often stand alone or a few parts. To be honest its such a mixed page that you might as well just dive in and see what lands. BUT always read any Concrete or Eddie Campbell stuff as its all good!

comics.org (can't believe I've not mentioned this before!) has a cover  gallery that  (https://www.comics.org/series/3301/covers/) you can click on to see what's in each issue.

Cheval Noir is all reprint of stuff from the continent but again I'd say just dive in.

Right second to last chunk:

Damn you need more Stray Bullets. Not helpful I know but its so good I would still recommend trying those 6 issues and see how you get on with it.

I will note that I'm not a massive fan of the post Alan Moore Swamp Things either. There's some okay stuff.

Invisibles is a curious Grant Morrison blind spot for me. Again came out in my wilderness years and not got around to it. But its GMozz so has to be a worth a go surely.

Tick I'm going to guess those ones listed as 1993 are actually the 88 series by Ben Edlund - that's the link and as such these are all you need to read. Its a great series/ Chroma Tick is colour reprints of those comics and I think the Omnibus you have reprints all the ben Edlund stuff. So read that stuff in the format that works best for you, but well worth reading for a good chuckle. Alas anything that's not by Ben Edlund is not really worth the time. Just those original perfect 12 issues!

This is the weakest chunk for me. Mainly as some of the best stuff you only have 1 or 2 issues of. So I'd suggest trying Strangers in paradise (not read this but meant to be really good), Tales of Beanworld, Strangeheaven (not read this but sounds really interesting), The Maxx, Usagi Yojimbo. When you burn through the other great stuff you have. But as said before you have quite enough to keep you busy without starting to buy stuff back... except Stray Bullets - so good!

Invisibles can be great. The first trade is superb stuff. But it also vanishes up its own backside quite often, and often only belatedly realises how violent and cruel it can be. Surprisingly, I thought it almost stuck the landing (the ending is, in its own way, quite beautiful in an abstract sense). But the art is all over the shop, to the point I needed a companion volume to make sense of one issue, which – unfortunately – was a 'reveal' about one of the key conceptual strands. If nothing else, it's a good lesson that when you're working on complex ideas, you need far more stability in the art than that series had.

I don't think Colin mentioned Grendel but it is a popular series (he's a fan) that I've only read bits of, including War Child which is more of a road trip wolf-and-cub type of adventure than the rest of it. But that can be read without too much knowledge of the preceding tales. Beautifully illustrated. Grendel will be one of Colin's top 100 he'll be writing about I expect. Batman vs Grendel is a decent enough tale but not essential.

The Dark Horse Alien limited series are all good and can all be read standalone. Definitely worth seeking out the continuing adventures of Hicks and Newt in Dark Horse Aliens books 1 and 2 that acted as sequels to the Aliens film - really good stuff, story and art. I've heard they were tweaked to change the characters' names following Alien 3, which killed the characters off. Book 3 Earth Wars wasn't great as it suffered from poor artwork.

Lobo is a series to appeal to the 14 year old boy in us. Throwaway stuff, guilty pleasure. Some loose Bisley work in the first few. Kevin O'Neill helms the Convention one. I liked them at the time!

Luther Arkwright is dynamite.

Metabarons I've read through. Good story, stunning art, can be read standalone, but worth seeking out the Incal, which it spun off out of. The Incal is tremendous, mad, zany, eye-popping, incredibly imaginative stuff. Top comics. I didn't like Before the Incal though - quite depressing. Final Incal was a nice cap but not essential.

The Invisibles I read the first few, pretty good but wasn't massively compelled to continue. If I had all the issues I'd give it a go though. Good point about the art from IP - it is all over the place.

Marshall Law well, Super Babylon not the best of his stories. Definitely seek out Fear and Loathing, top Pat Mills, and Kevin O'Neill's best self-coloured art IMO. The early episodes some of my favourite comics, I'd really recommend them. They just tailed off a bit after FaL and Kingdom of the Blind.

Yes, I think they are the '88 ones. Finishing in '93 (apart from the one much later). I got the link sorted descending and that's probably why I put in the wrong date.

I only have #2 of the omnibuses, and missing #s 1, 3 & 13 of the '88 series, but seem to have all of the Chroma Tick, so looks like that's the one to read!

They're only split up that way so they fit in the forum's 20000 character limit :)

I'm interested in anything that's good, even if it's not worth filling by issue. If there's something that's good to get and there's a collected volume or set, I can add it to the list of things to track down eventually!

Quote from: Colin YNWA on 19 December, 2023, 08:30:27 AMI will note that I'm not a massive fan of the post Alan Moore Swamp Things either. There's some okay stuff.
I read a bit about what happens to the character after the Moore run and it seems like they messed with one of his most interesting aspects and made him more villainous. Villains are very very often portrayed in an extremely cliché way in fiction (presumably because it's easy to do) and I get quite tired of it, so the point of changing a character that has an interesting nature into one that's cliché is probably where I'll stop reading.

I'm very curious about the Alien/Aliens material out there. Is there any fully collected sets that are fairly easy to track down? I don't know how much there is as I can't find anything that seems to be a definitive easy-to-follow list of everything. I subscribed to the Hachette HB Alien/Predator "Graphic Novel Collection" that they trialled some years ago because I thought it'd be a good way to get everything, but they ended up with only the 4 trial issues.

Sooo much to recommend here. Other people have made some very good suggestions, but I'll add the Black Orchid 3 of 3, by Gaiman and McKean. McKean's art here is (based on a 30-something year old memory) better than his Arkham Asylum, parts of which are also jolly good.

I'll also encourage you to look at Sandman Mystery Theatre. Just a shame you've not got it all - well worth collecting the rest. It's a tragedy that two attempts to have this collected in full have failed. It's one the best comic series I've read.

Ah, now this has reminded me that I was definitely planning to read the Sandman series, and in (superficially) researching the titles that I have I discovered that there are a great many spin-offs from that, and then spin-offs from the spin-offs, or so it seemed, and I kept discovering things that were interrelated. I got quite confused again here. The Sandman universe seems to be quite large.

Black Orchid is another one I'd planned to read and fill. Visually it looks really good, and it probably won't take much to fill 6 issues... right...? Sometimes I'm afraid to look at the prices of these things

Another title that I got confused about was... now I don't know which is first... The Books / Names of Magic. As I was sorting through these comics I kept finding the odd issues of other series and then discovering that they are (or seemed to be) related to those; at least tangentially... maybe. *gives weak & unsure smile* Such as (I think) Mister E, The Books of Faerie?

If that all sounds a bit vague and unsure, it's because that's exactly right. I don't know how, or if, they're related, and what else there is that I might need in order to fill what I have (or replace with collected volumes).

*gives another apologetic wan half-smile*

Three issues in the 'prestige' format (48pgs, square bound), so you've got the last issue in the series. A quick look on eBay suggests that you can pick up single issues if you hunt around but, TBH, you could probably pick up one of the TPB collections the same way for about the same money, or less.

Sandman Mystery Theatre is only tangentially related to Gaiman's Sandman and its offshoots. This book is based on Wesley Dodds, the original Golden Age 'Sandman' character, and is fairly solidly film noir in tone, with little to no supernatural goings-on.

Gaiman's Sandman was an entirely different character, although, in the first issue of Gaiman's Sandman, it's suggested (retroactively) that Wesley Dodds was inspired to become his version of The Sandman by the universe attempting to correct for Dream's century-long imprisonment, which covered the period during with Dodds was active.

It was very much the vogue in the second half of the 80s for DC to take Hot British Rising Star Writer™ and stick them on an obscure character and/or failing book (Moore on Swamp Thing as the latter, Morrison on both Animal and Doom Patrol as examples of both, respectively) and pretty much say "Do you what you want".

Black Orchid is an example of that. ISTR Gaiman recounting how, when he told the editor he wanted to do Black Orchid, the editor replied "Black Hawk Kid?" Which should give you an idea of how obscure the character was. So... yes, the character existed before the Gaiman/McKean mini-series, but barely.

Quoth Wikipedia:

QuoteThe superhero Black Orchid, created by Sheldon Mayer and Tony Zuniga, first appeared in Adventure Comics #428 (June 1973), and was published by DC Comics. She was the first superhero to debut as the cover feature of the series since Starman in 1941; she was not given an origin story and her personal life was not shown. After a three-issue run in Adventure Comics, Black Orchid quickly faded into obscurity, but sporadically made guest appearances in other DC publications.

There was an attempt at an ongoing series off the back of the Gaiman/McKean mini with a new writer and artist — I know I bought a couple of issues of it but don't recall it being anything special.

Basically, that three-issue series is probably the character's most noteworthy appearance and (for me, at least) is more notable for McKean's astonishing art than Gaiman's fairly leisurely story.

EDIT TO ADD: So, per your original list, if you have #3 of 3 of the 1988 series then you need 1-2 to complete the story, but as I mentioned, you might find one of the TPBs collecting all three issues as cheap or cheaper on eBay. Your second listing of #16 of 22 is from the follow-up monthly series which, IMO, isn't really worth pursuing. If anyone on here has read more of it than I have, they may have a different opinion...

Yep Grendel is SO good. I do think the Batman / Grendel isn't the best of it but all Matt Wagner is good. He co wrote Sandman Mystery Theatre as well on a related note.

And yep the 1988 Black Orchid is entirely all you need to read and self contained and the art is astonishing.

So last chunk and then we can really get down to some reflections - it would be amazing to use this thread to hear how you get on with stuff as you read it... anyway.

V for Vendetta - I reckon you will have this in hand and its all you need for V.

World without End is worth it for the John Higgins art.

I've never read Kill your boyfriend and know nothing about it but with that creative team that's gotta be worth checkin' out. I know I will be!

I'm curious which issue of Uncanny X-Men you have. Not a fan of the comics particularly just with everything else here and the fact there's only one makes me really curious!

Also Within Reach isn't something I've ever heard of but that cover by Norm Breyfogle - wow. A Norm Breyfogle Spidey run is something I'd have loved to seen.

Ah, I see the confusion. The 'Have' column is listing the quantity of issues that I have, not the issue number. I have a total of 3 out of 3 issues for that (issues #1, #2 and #3). And I have 16 issues out of 22 for the second volume (missing #1 to #6).

I tried listing the issue numbers when I started making BBCode out of the spreadsheet, but it looked even more of a complete mess than it does now. So I decided to go for showing only the quantities.

Within Our Reach is one of those that has two covers. You flip it over and there's a front cover on either side. It means that half of the book is upside down compared to the other half. According to the comicvine link the other cover (I like to think the proper front, based on the way the spine reads) is by Paul Chadwick : linky (https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-9355645.jpg?1486345708)

As for that X-Men that's a great cover from a wobbly but interesting period of the comic which I loved back in the day, have little time for these days.

I think that Outbreak is in that Hachette collection, but not the others in that volume. Not that I've even opened the Hachette HBs - they're all still sealed in their original shrinkwrap

And I see from an Amazon search for Aliens Omnibus that there also newer HB omnibuses titled "The Original Years", and paperback ones collecting fewer stories, but much cheaper. And I'm confused again. I need a single source to explain everything Alien-related and where they're collected! Without knowing more about the titles I don't know what's sensible to start getting! I need to already have the issues in order to know enough about them in order to know what compiled works to get. There's no entry point!!!

*faints*

The stories and characters have been renamed since I read them which makes things confusing. So long as they are Dark Horse and the author is Mark Verheiden you should be good. One reviewer of "the essential comics" version provides a good write-up. I read what is now "outbreak" in excellent b&w, can't vouch for the colouring:

QuoteThe Dark Horse Trilogy of Aliens is perhaps the closest you will ever come to having a satisfying conclusion to Ridley Scotts original and Jim Camerons sequel. The movies that came after failed to deliver and William Gibsons: Alien 3 is... Well, not to be rude but it isn't very good, either. So thank goodness DHP came along to drive (what should've been), a decent story out of an i.p's final plot arc. Dark Horse did the same for Predator, Aliens vs Predator and The Terminator. All of which came along with better story plot sequels than their Movie counterparts (and all of which come thoroughly recommended. AvP Book 1, is probably one of the best cross overs in the history of any media).

Asides from the story. The First Book and Second Book have been renamed. What was originally "Book One". Is now "Outbreak" and Book Two is now "Nightmare Asylum". Outbreak has now been coloured (Originally in b&w), though not sure if this takes away from Mark Nelsons excellent original inkwork. And the cast have been returned to their original movie names... DHP made some weird attempt to keep their story relevant and in line with the terrible 3rd and 4th films in some previous Editions. Why ? You tell me man, I only work here ("D)... But very happy that the original story has been restored to how it should be. (Hicks, Newt and Butler as opposed to Brian, Gary and Phil (or whatever stupid names they got replaced with. I, thankfully have forgot).).

And what an incredible job, this Trilogy of tales does too. Should make special note of Denis Beauvais, artist for Book 2: Nigtmare Asylum. He nails the look and feel of the universe perfectly. The artists for Book 1 & 3 tend to have gone their own way, design wise. So some of the actual movie feel gets lost. especially in Earth War (3). Sam Keith really goes to town in re-envisioning pretty much everything in the movie universe. And as a result loses a lot of the excellent groundwork laid down by Beauvais in Book 2. Which for all intents and purposes is tone and picture perfect and the undoubted highlight of the entire novel. The overall quality of the final product is very impressive for the price. The pages are more like thin card and the printing is crisp and clear. A really nice Edition. Thoroughly recommend.

This will always be just "volume 2" to me. I think it was originally done fully painted, or airbrushed maybe, in very lovely colour. It is stunning to look at.

I was massively disappointed with the art in the follow up, Earth Wars. I don't think I'll ever get over it (throws a Devlin Waugh 'how could they' pose).

Aliens-unrelated, but I just thought I'd mention that Mark Verheiden (obviously) went on to a fairly impressive career outside comics writing for film and TV, but has recently penned a new supernatural thriller mini-series for Dark Horse called 'Borealis' — the first comic he's written (co-written, more accurately) in a very long time.

Kill Your Boyfriend would be pretty high on my list of all time favourite Morrison stories.

It's a sort of breezy 90s kitchen sink take on the same themes of identity and freedom which The Invisibles ties itself in knots over and Bond's wonderful art ties it together beautifully.

Since I found myself alone and with bugger all to do on Christmas Day I decided to read some comics :)

I started with Within Our Reach (it's Christmassy after all, and it was in an easy-to-reach box on the top of the stack).
Pretty good actually; a slight but variously entertaining selection of Christmas cheer (and some not so cheer). Varied between enjoyable, meandering, quite boring, and poignant, depending on the story.

Then I read Critical Error (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/critical-error/4050-22504/) which was a very speedy read (having no words) and quite enjoyable. Not particularly memorable as a story, but with just enough room for reader interpretation to make it interesting, and well drawn (especially as there were no words to do the usual job of explaining what the characters were feeling or thinking).

Then I went for Graffiti Kitchen (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/graffiti-kitchen/4050-36534/) which couldn't have been more different. Whereas the John Byrne one took about 5 minutes, this one took over an hour. Very wordy in comparison, and also not that interesting. A rambling meandering tour through the life of a character that, as I understand it is a stand-in for Eddie Campbell himself. I'm not a huge fan of his scratchy, noisy, induced-pareidolia art style - I flicked through From Hell and that didn't appeal much either - but it sort of grew on me by the end, so I have some hope for From Hell :) It was a similar thing with Paul Pope's art style in the THB one I read, which I also thought didn't make any sense until I read one through.

I'd have read Kill Your Boyfriend next but I can't find it. I think it's probably in one of the many boxes I have in off-site storage. Along with Shade. And loads of others. So I'll have to fetch them back.

Now I've decided to read the 2000 AD Dan Dare that I'd failed at so long ago, and this time I'm sticking with it! So far I've read the first Biogs story and some of the next one. It's mostly crap, but I suppose it's of its time. The continuity is all over the place as it is with so many comics, probably mostly because of the episodic nature, but I think not entirely as other episodic titles are more focused than this one. I think that a lot of it is just bad script design. And I never really liked Belardinelli's art that much. I'm still not that impressed, but I'm on to whoever is the next artist now - Dave Gibbons I think - and it's much more readable.

I completely see that Eddie Campbell's art is an aquired taste, it absolutely works for me, but fair warning if you don't like Alex stuff (the character from Graffiti Kitchen) and the art is a part of that then alas the Bacchus / Deadface stuff might not be for you either.

Looking forward to get Within Our Reach all the more how!

Hope you had a fun, if varied, day!

As any anthology it has its ups and downs but overall an absolute treat. Reminded me of those old A1 collections from back in the day. If you see it on your travels its well worth picking up.

Thanks for the heads up on this one Fortnight, I'll be getting this out next year... well this years X-Mas I think!

I should be thanking you Colin. I wouldn't have singled it out from all the other single-volume books I have without your highlighting it!
In fact, when I first sorted through them I'd put it in the 'Superhero Crap' pile because of the Spider-Man cover. I have a particular hate for Spider-Man. Well, perhaps hate is too strong, but definite dislike. He's at best an average character, yet gets near-rabid levels of popularity. Then there's the stupid hyphen in the name. Does Batman have a hyphen? No. Does Superman have a hyphen? No.
I won't sully your top 100 Spider-Man post with my whinings though :) Maybe there's one story that's good :D

I got back all my boxes of comics that were in off-site storage - still no sign of Kill Your Boyfriend but it's only one slim book in a stack of 8 19L Really Useful boxes tightly packed with comics, so I'll need to go through in more detail.

Found Shade though. But first I'm having a go at Black Orchid in between the longer read of 2000 AD's Dan Dare. I only just started and already Black Orchid has got killed. Promising start

Speaking of Kill your Boyfriend talk of it here made me pick up a copy via eBay and MAN did I get a deal. Turns out the one I ordered was the deluxe hardcopy edition with Vimanarama included (also Morrison and Bond and I've not read that either!) still shrink wrapped for £8 including postage! Bloody hell.

The seller has multiple copies so if anyone one is interest in this let me know and I'll pass on the details.

Well, I just finished Kill Your Boyfriend, and I'm sad to say I thought it was absolute tripe. Tedious puerile bollocks. I felt a bit like I'd wasted my time - and all that effort in searching for it too :D

The characters are as caricature as the art, which I found easy on the eye, but only functional in its appeal. Not bad, but not great. All the characters were written as superficial and cliché, and unrealistic in the way they thought and behaved right from the outset. Surely no-one actually thinks with so little depth? If they were deliberately written that way to make a point and highlight their flaws or something it'd be worthwhile, but there seemed to be no purpose to their shallowness; no contrast with actual people. They were just shallow. All of them. Even the benign ones.

Overall it gave me the same feeling I had when I watched The Last Seduction (in '96/'97). I don't think I've ever hated a film more. None of the characters were even remotely likeable or with any redeeming features. Maybe it's just how I am that I need to give at least one shit about a character for it to be worth giving my time. But in that film, like this comic, not a single shit was available.

I tried re-watching Natural Born Killers recently(ish) (which I enjoyed at the cinema when it came out) but I found that to be worthless too, for the same reason. The characters are just so fuckwitted.

I'd probably have thought a lot better of it if I'd read it when it was new; at the age I was then. I guess I grew up after all.

Shame.

I finished off Black Orchid yesterday and in contrast that was brilliant. Perfectly paced, with just the right amount of time spent reading to get the flow smooth, so it seemed not too fast a read, but not tediously slow either. Great story, not too much explained too early, not too much left ultimately unsaid. A touch contrived at the end ("and the bad guys just changed their mind") but at least there had been some level of justification leading up to it.

The art is absolutely wonderful. Got to admire an artist who can craft faces so skilfully.

I think I'll try the other two Vertigo Voices titles next, since they're out, and likely to be quickies too.

Always a relief when someone agrees with me. At least I'm not totally missing the point :). It didn't help that it's also just not the type of story I'd normally choose to read. If I wanted a slice of life I'd go outside where those terrible humans are

I also read the third in the Vertigo Visions set yesterday, the Jamie Delano one, Tainted, and that was way better and far far more enjoyable. The characters were no less fuckups but at least they had some depth to them; some aspect that made them seem like they were thinking, and not just the "the world is designed to turn us all into robots so I rebel!" crap that's the trademark of the lean-of-thought.

Next up will be the Peter Milligan one Face
Title: Re: Rescued comics and what should a comics-noob do with 'em?

I have a strong suspicion that no-one is all that interested in my adventures in reading through some of this stuff, but, and in spite of obviously being a crap reviewer, here are some further thoughts on what else I've read.

Face
The third (well first, technically) of the Vertigo Voices trio.
This was also pretty good - certainly enjoyable. The plot was quite straight forward - I didn't spend the first half of the book wondering what the hell was going on as I sometimes have with other books I've read.

The dialogue is filled with such massively pretentious cheese that it's funny (possibly unintentionally) but very entertainingly executed nonetheless.

I've now read enough of Milligan to spot that identity and the sense of self are recurring themes of his, and this one has that in spades. I'd already guessed the broad strokes of the twist at the end the by the time that all the characters had entered the story, but it was carried out with some nice unexpected details. Well worth the hour it took to read, and probably worth re-reading at some point, too.

Metaphysique
Two-volume anthology by Norm Breyfogle. I picked up the one I was missing easily enough.
A selection of very enjoyable short stories drawn in a variety of different (and excellent) styles. A couple are just odd. Not really too much to say about it since most stories were too short to go into much depth on anything, but it was fun.

Drywall: Unzipped
Strange little story. I got the impression that I ought to have already read the related works in which the character debuted, but it worked on its own and had a very unique feel to it. Part fun cartoon, part bittersweet metaphor. I wonder if the other books are similarly off kilter. I'm very curious.

Angela
Simple, but enjoyable story. I mean, simple. There was really nothing to the story at all. It's basically an entertaining yarn, and if there was any subtext to it it was minimal. The art looked very good but I found that I had to look at it for longer than I thought I ought to work out what it was depicting. It started to make me feel like my eyes weren't working properly any more. Might have benefitted me to have read Spawn up 'til that point (I've read none), but it didn't feel like it was essential.

Shade (1977)
I thought I'd give the Ditko original a go before moving on to the 1990 Milligan volume at last, so I picked up the copies that I was missing.

Surprisingly enjoyable. The art was clean and clear, and the story, despite some seeming non-sequiturs and the lack of a proper ending, was moving along nice and fun. Although it did at several points really seem like he was making it up one issue at a time.

And what's with all the ads for instant muscles? The 70s in the US were clearly weirder than in the UK.

Shade (1990)
I'm now reading this. I'd been putting it off a bit because it's going to be a long read.

The first issue was a decent comprehensible intro. The next 3 or 4 were an odd mix of abstract and surreal metaphor for 75% of each issue juxtaposed with one or two pages of functional prosaic exposition at the end. As if Milligan had presented the script to an editor who'd said, "That's great Peter, but put some explanation in at the end so people know what the fuck is going on". It felt very jarring to go from the esoteric to the mundane in the space of one panel.

It's become obvious that there was absolutely no need to read the Ditko original, and in fact it would probably have been better if I hadn't. The names are reused, but the events and background given in the Ditko story have been almost entirely discarded and only get in the way of the comprehension of the new Shade. Even the vest that is the source of Shade's abilities is not the same device.

I should add that I have no knowledge of how the character was progressing in his appearances elsewhere between the two volumes, but since Ditko's Shade has a different past to this, I doubt it matters any.

I've just finished #11 and it feels like the first few were essentially Milligan trying to find his feet with the character; not yet settled on who or what Shade was, and trying to separate him from the dregs of the old-Shade he'd nearly tied him to. Issue 11 feels like the first one to have a more thought-out and even narrative.

Now I'm enjoying it, and the storytelling has got smoother and much easier to read. Not quite getting that unputdownable vibe. At least not yet.

In between all of this I've also read a bit more of the 2000 AD Dan Dare (entertaining claptrap) and the last of the Terry Goodkind series of novels that I'd not yet read (regular novels with like just words n that, via ebook) - the Scribbly Man ones.

And, of course, I've read the 17th-day-of-Christmas-Special of the Chefs of Death :D  Hi bdk.

I read a lot.

Reading a lot is good, so good. Its also great to see that you are reading some really interesting stuff, a lot of which I've not read but you are really peaking my interest!

I've read neither Face or Metaphysique, but both are by creators I really like in Milligan and Breyfogle and I must get around to tracking them down. I must admit I thought Metaphysique was a superhero title in Malibu's short lived line and so hadn't rushed to it. You make it sound like that might be a mistake on my part.

Never heard of Drywall, whose it by?

Interesting you went to Ditko's Shade ahead of tackling Milligan's. I've still never read those but have always been interesting. Though knew that they were different enough to probably not be as good as I would like them to be. Ditko's DC titles just don't scream out to me the way kirby's do.

Glad to hear you are getting on with Milligan's Shade, hope it remains a worthwhile read for you.

There is a 6-issue series (https://www.comics.org/series/15156/) by Breyfogle from Malibu Comics in 1995 which I don't have, and seems to be a superhero title.

The one I have is a 2-isssue series (https://www.comics.org/series/22071/) from Eclipse in 1992, which is an anthology. It's 'presented' by a character called Metaphysique (a la the Crypt Keeper from Creepshow) which may have been what was then developed into the 1995 series. I don't know :)

Drywall is by Rob Schrab, and its cover says it's "a Scud world spin-off". I had a look at the info on comic vine for Scud and it didn't seem very inspirational, but then neither did the blurb on Drywall: Unzipped, and I enjoyed that.

One good turn, and all that

I am interested in this thread for sure!

Probably not read any of these myself but I have read the complete Scud, it being one of those comics I heard lots of good things about, bought it and didn't really enjoy it at all. It's one of those strips that drips 90s-indie-comic-ness... so it's possible I've read that Drywall comic. The Shade stuff sounds interesting though.
