Title: Lawless 2024
Post by: GoGilesGo on 17 December, 2023, 08:21:42 AM
Line up announced for 2024.

The guests confirmed so far are spectacular, and even more mouth-watering is the ...With More to Come coda.

Looking forward to this. My annual road trip down from Cal-Hab.

Some creators that I've never met before. Sue and the team do a great job.

If you have the money and time I'd go for the 2 days. The panels are great and the best one is the Droid Draw off if they have one - it's a hoot

This looks fantastic and I am definitely going - last year I did both days and it really enhanced the experience, I can't recommend it highly enough. I'm excited to annoy meet Simon Fraser.

It's be brilliant to meet some of you guys there for a messageboard meetup. I've hung out with McFad the last couple of years and he is a very cool guy, so go meet him even if you want to avoid me!

That's the tickets bought and I've splashed out on the VIP tickets which gets me and the very good lady into a special prize giving for 10 years of Lawless (as well as the 2 days of the con)
So looking forward to this it's always been brilliant the few times I've dragged the better half down to Bristol.

Now looking forward to meeting up with Barrington Boots and his good lady again 🤞🏻

If anyone else on the board is able to go it would be good to say Hi and put a face to the names.

17 weeks today 😁

I'll be mooching around all weekend, making the place look untidy. As usual, I don't have a table — just look out for The Gothest Man In The Room™, and that will almost certainly be me. And 'The Room' will almost certainly be the bar. :)

Although I'm not tabling, I am a guest, so if you want anything signing or just want to say hello, please do. Don't worry about interrupting if it looks like I'm talking to someone — they'll probably be delighted for an opportunity to make their escape...

I have weekend tickets for my first ever comic con. La Fink will be in Bristol too but won't be attending the Con. Will be good to put some faces to names, looking forward to meeting some fellow boarders.

If you have any tips on where to stay, do share.

Does it really start at 9am?

Ish. That relies on the comic creators actually getting out of bed, having breakfast, and getting their tables set up by 9:00. If there's an early panel you want to see, check the programme and be there in time for that, but, otherwise, you won't miss anything if you don't get there until mid-morning. :)

Le Fink - Being your first con you won't have anything to compare it with however for me it's the best I've been at. I've been at a few larger ones that have the TV and film stars but they are not a patch on this (in my view) and what I hear the other smaller ones are just as good.

I have to say my first Lawless I was "star struck" even more so than the 40th bash. I don't know why a man in his late 40s at the time should be like this but the friendly nature of the whole thing puts you at ease very quickly.
Maybe it's all the Cosplayers milling about?

As Jim says it never starts dead on 9:00 - not the times I've been.

The panels are great and varied- one not to miss if they have it is the Artist Draw off.

Remember to post on here any distinguishing features/clothing so you can be spotted in the crowd.

As for accommodation if you have a lot to get signed and your budget allows I'd recommend the Hilton so you can keep returning to the room but there's a few others well within walking distance I've heard are pretty decent price wise.

Ahh, that never really goes away, in my experience. I've been a full-time professional in the industry for fifteen years and there are still always creators at cons I'd love to talk to, but completely bottle it.

At my first Lawless I bottled talking to Jim!

It'll be awesome to meet you Fink.

As McFad says staying at the Hilton is great if you can as its so convenient, especially if you plan on buying anything. I think there's a Novotel and  Holiday Inn within easy walking distance too.
Traffic is Bristol is pretty awful, so if you're coming down on the day, make an early start: last year I missed the first couple of hours more or less due to that.

I have a compted hotel night so will be staying at the Marriott Royal, same as last year. It's a 15 minute walk away across the canal and Queen Square which, if the weather is as nice as '23, is a lovely way to see the city and not far to go if you need to pop back and drop off books or sketches. Doubletree Hilton is of course the ultimate location. Su and team are usually able to get a decent deal on rooms.

So whose defo going to this? Just started to get off my ass to organised going and it all rather slammin' up in price! With train ticket, room and entry I need some encouragement to shell out. I can do Thought Bubble for 1/2 the price and was juggling which to go for.

The cool thing about Lawless I'm thinking is meeting folks from the board, so whose defo going (I'm defo not sure yet!)

I'm on the guest list, so I'll be there! Not tabling, so look for me in the bar or mooching around the smoking area (which is outside, behind the bar). I'll be there from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning.

If that doesn't put you off, nothing will.  :D

Colin,

if you are deciding between Lawless and Thought Bubble, it depends what you want. Are you looking for a broad comics experience or an intense 2000AD jamboree?

I know you have love for a wide range of comics so you will probably get to meet a broader range of people at TB.

If the Harrogate festival is like last year 2000ad will should have a decent sized presence and should bring along, let's say half a dozen droids. On top of that there will be another 50 or so creators from big publishers through independent, niche presses. However the whole weekend is held inside a very large warehouse-like hall so seems a little impersonal to me.

Lawless is in a very intimate space, moreover Su and the team hit the bullseye with creator : fan ratio. I think they are anticipating around 320 attendees this year...and hosting 35 creators.

The space at the DoubleTree (one fairly large room for droids, another slightly smaller one for traders, an 80ish person capacity conference room for talks, a middling space for the Dave Roach exhibition) is perfectly-sized. I went last year and never felt rushed, never felt like I was going to miss a signing or sketch opportunity, never looked at a queue and thought, why bother? In fact, the very opposite: I chatted to umpteen artists and writers and the longest I waited for anything was a 15 minute queue for a bespoke Henry Flint sketch.

If you want to save a bit of dough

Option One: get an early train on Saturday and aim to be there for 10:30 in time for the first talk, then stay only one night.

Option Two: The action wraps up by 3pm / 3:30pm on the Sunday so if you think you can get everything achieved in one day maybe get a day return and head back home on Saturday night.

My vote is Lawless, and yes, I am defo going.

Good work (or maybe not!) folks. That's all good stuff. I've been to Thought Bubble, but not since it moved to Harrogate and have never been to Lawless. Which was part of the temptation BUT as goGilesGo says I do like me comics across the board so Thought Bubble is generally more up my street and closer. But you all make Lawless sound great fun, in a small 'n cozy sort of way.

I was ready to book this weekend but might give it a bit of settlin' time. Mind there are still rooms at the Double Tree so probably wise not to leave it too long.

Thanks for the food for thought folks.

I'll be there Saturday only - hotel's are getting expensive...

Comparing the two is a bit tricky for me as I've tabled more at TB than Lawless/Lawgiver

Lawless is full-on 2000 AD, with a smattering of other stuff, it's small but it's more like a mini-40th event

TB is OK, but I preferred the Royal Armouries

Honestly, I don't — I always felt like something was going on elsewhere that I was missing when TB was in Leeds. Harrogate is engagingly compact... everytime someone messaged me to say they're in 'X' pub/bar/restaurant/hotel I'd Google-Map it and it'd be a five minute walk. The convention itself is well-organised and uses the layout effectively.

TL;DR — I much prefer the Harrogate incarnation. Hopefully, I'll see some of you there this year!

Fair enough - Harrogate is more central, but that extra distance from SW London + not having the central area to escape to swung it for me

I've loved Thought Bubble in both the Armouries and those couple of years across the City centre. Not been since its been in Harrogate so very interest to see how well that works.

As for Lawless well I have the pss offically stamped BUT that was done just as we were booking a couple of summer breaks so just need to see how I feel in the morning and how financially tender I am.

Meeting folks here, so Barrington Boots that is defo a factor, is the main draw for Lawless. Let's see how a nights sleep does for it all...

I can definitely see that — I don't drive, so it doesn't make much difference to me. Although I'm coming from the Midlands, LNER run a train that goes direct from King's Cross to Harrogate three or four times a day. I catch it at Grantham, but it's quite a civilised journey, and reasonably fast up the east coast electrified line... :)

Yeah, for something you're just going to crash at, it's a lot (and you're going to spending money at the hotel over the 2 days) - I would have hoped anyone helping out might get discount.

I'll be honest, I'm torn on the shift to two days - I think they crammed in too many panels when it was a single day, and maybe this is an over-correction.

It's more worth the journey for people who are traveling a long distance, but I think it's kind of stuck by not being able to spread out in that location.

I'm going to Lawless for the first time this year (just the Saturday). Mainly hoping to get some sketches. I've only been to one other Con, NICE in Bedford last year. That was great but queued over 3 hours to get an Alan Davis sketch of the good Captain (not that I regret it of course, well worth it).

But are waits like that normal at Lawless as well ? If I want to get something from say Chris Weston or Pye Parr or Glenn Fabry, do I realistically need to just choose one to make a bee-line for and then wait it out ?? As I say, this will be my second show so don't know what's 'normal' is in terms of waiting times.

I haven't actually queued up for anything at the con, but I'm pretty sure Lawless has a limit on tickets at about ~350, so if every single punter there all decided to queue up for the same creator at the same time, you might be looking at a multi-hour wait, but it seems unlikely.

Pretty sure Brian Bolland had the longest queue last time — dunno if anyone on the forum got anything signed by Brian last year and can report on queuing time...?
Title: Re: Lawless 2024
Post by: Trooper McFad on 29 April, 2024, 10:43:28 PM

I've never had to queue that long for a sketch but I've had to leave my name & character and go back later that day to pick up a sketch especially if you are there right till the end (Dan Cornwell and Clint Langley are a couple had to come back for but they were well worth it. But most I've had sketched in front of you and boy it's amazing to see these things appear in front of you (Henry Flint and John Higgins are 2 that stand out among the many)
I'm managing around 4 sketches per day of attending.
But the talks and atmosphere are well worth it and I recommend a visit to Lyndon's table in the traders room for some cracking sketches.
Enjoy your day and wear a red carnation and I'll say Hi
Title: Re: Lawless 2024
Post by: Barrington Boots on 01 May, 2024, 10:07:36 AM
I can also confirm you definitely won't have a giant wait for a sketch. Everyone I've had one from at Lawless either did it there and then, or asked me to pop back later for it as I was there both days, and there's rarely a queue, more just a few guys hanging around the tables chatting. It's a really nice atmosphere.

You'll run out of money before you run out of patience :)

So, will we be seeing you there Colin?

I had a go at a booking hotel this weekend and now I'm just playing chicken with the hotel prices so think I am.

Well that's super kind. Since I've just booked ticket, hotel and train its looks like I'm defo, defo in.

Let's see how happy you are when I actually see you - would be lovely to arrange a meet up but I'll also see if I can dig out my forum avatar badge that served me so well at the 40th.

Really looking forward to this now and meeting as many of you as possible.

I hope to bump into you all. I've slightly madly got a T-shirt made with my avatar so I'll be wandering around looking like a deranged perfume advert. So I'll be easy to avoid, at least. Anyway I'm a proper Southerner, tall slim glasses-wearing nerdy type, middle of age. Look forward to meeting some fellow boarders.

I'm going to take this at face value, in which case EXCELLENT, I'll be in that queue too!

If I say I think Noam's an ape, rather than a monkey, that's not going to help my chances for a sketch though, is it? So I definitely won't mention that. Nope.

Cool Beans. I'll defo look out for you.

I'm proper northern (well from Merseyside and Sheffield so the south of proper northern) and look like a typical Sheffield Gammon (while promising I'm not a gammon and have much more liberal views!). Bald, middle aged and probably a little red of face by the time I arrive (though pasty and gray I'd imagine on Sunday if Saturday evening is as much fun as other cons I've attended!). Overweight of course too - but this is were the Sheffield comes in - but an inability to avoid middleclass outdoor excerise so infecting the middleclass parts of Sheffield mean there's hints I'm trying to do something about it... trying...

Every year for about 5 years now I've been promising I'll make Lawless someday. Think it was about 2 years ago I promised myself I'd make it, if I wasn't able to do so sooner, to the 10th anniversary convention.

Initially I wrote it off, as the weekend in question is when I was supposed to be doing a van run to help my sister move into her temporary summer digs in Manchester before she starts Uni in September.
Turns out that's been delayed until the following weekend, so might sneak in a cheeky Saturday only trip.
See folks there!

oh that's fantastic news. Its been too long since we caught up Zac.

I'm much the same I've been meaning to get to Lawless for years now but for one reason or another never quite got to it. Having finally taken the plunge I'm now super excited. Hope this inspires me to get back to Thought Bubble as well after far too long. That's for after however...

I'm still weighing up whether I can make this one. I'd like to as I've only ever been to one before and that was Bristol 2008. Back then at that one, I managed to get a lot of stuff signed and some good sketches - Dredd by Boo, Dredd by D'Israeli, Dredd by Dylan Teague and Nik Dante by John Burns so I'd love to get some more to add to those.

It's great to see so many boarders able to attend this year's Lawless. I hope to put a lot of faces to the names on here - Barrington Boots & Jim I have faces so can pick them out. Maybe a name badge with our board names on would help 😂😂😂

On the Saturday look out for the mad Scotsman or the guy with blue GI T on and the Sunday I'll risk wearing a RoK of the reds away top (shouldn't really wear a football top at my age 😁)
Is there anyone else going to the bash on the Saturday evening?

No evening do for me I'm afraid mate, I didn't fancy dressing up! I'll catch you after for some drinks in the bar?

Looking forward to meeting some of you guys for the first time!
Last couple of years I've worn my heavy metal jacket for easy identification but it's hot and heavy for going round a con, so I'll tag up what I'm wearing on the day. I'm sure I'll be easy to find in a room full of similar-looking men.

Yeah I managed to book to late to get a ticket for the VIP bash - so Barrington if you fancy playing out in the evening that would be super cool.

To be honest it might be a little to sit down at a table to be as much fun as hanging out at the bar has always been at cons I've been to in the past has been. But sounds like it could be a blast for those who have got tickets.

Indeed I'm on rather of a budget at the moment so only see myself picking up a few things on impulse throughout the day.
Mostly just be please for the socials, no VIP party for myself naturally but a quite few at the pub never goes amiss.
