Film & TV / 24

There's probably a thread for this but I can't find it...

Watched the first 4 seasons back in the day and then drifted from it, but because Lovefilm Instant has it and because as episode fits comfortably into a lunch hour I've been watching season 5, and it's epic.

It's over the top, occasionally madly so, but I'm really impressed with the writing chops it must take to try and sustain and escalate a scenario over 24 episodes. As silly as it all is it's really quite brilliant entertainment.

Oh, and I actually cried at one point during this season (luckily I wasn't watching that one at my desk). I know, I know, I never thought 24 could do that either, and it probably can't unless you're an emotional trainwreck like myself, but it happened. So there.

Help! / Complaining about a problem tenant?
25 August, 2012, 11:56:26 AM
Just curious if anyone has dealt with this before because I'm clueless how to proceed!

Our neighbor across the hall leaves bin bags full of dirty nappies in the hall outside our door, we can smell them in our home and generally she leaves them there for almost a week. We were really nice about it and were loaning her our key to the bin area (because she claims to not have one), but she's now refusing to take it (posting it back through our door if we post it to her).

The latest bag has been there for 3 days so I wrote a letter explaining the smell and hygiene problems and asking if she could remove it, posted it through her door and then found it unopened in the hall. Posted it again, same thing happened. Knocked on her door to hand it to her and she started shouting at me and threw it at me.

It's a council flat so I've emailed them but I don't even know if that's the process and they apparently don't respond for up to 15 days. I don't really want to deal with her anymore, but them nappies need gone :/

Anyone dealt with problem neighbors before and got any advice?

Just a wee post to say my new band are playing at 13th Note, Glasgow tonight (6th July) if anyone fancies some beers and music. We're on first so pop along early if you're coming, it's £4 on the door and them doors open at 8pm.

We don't have much in the way of things recorded so far barring a handful of incredibly rough demos, but if you do fancy checking us out then http://www.facebook.com/teresabanksmusic is the place to go. Tonight is the first gig and likely a lot of things will go wrong that may never go wrong again, so it'll be a wee bit special ;)

Cheers!

Help! / I've lost my Windows 7 Product Key!
06 July, 2012, 08:16:32 AM
Hello!

I had to put my PC in for repair recently because the motherboard needed replaced, and the guy had to reinstall Windows 7. Unfortunately because the PC was homemade by my brother and he didn't hold onto the product key I'm now being told I need to pay for another license.

Obviously I don't want to do that unless I really have to, so thought I'd check if anyone else has had this problem and how to get around it?

I thought emailing Microsoft support and explaining the situation might be a start, but when I try to email them I get asked to pay £46 for the service, which blew my mind.

Any help appreciated!

This bothered me, so thought I'd share and try and drum up some more support...

My brother's mate is setting up this game-themed bar/restaurant in Vancouver, they're due to open next month but the liquor board are now denying their license because there'll be videogames there and obviously alcohol is for adults and games are for kids.

If you play games or work in games then you know how small minded and offensive that is, so even though it's all the way in Vancouver I think we can all agree this is a petition that needs signed.

Please do!

Games / Game in biiiiiig trouble?
08 February, 2012, 09:56:29 PM
Rumblings are that Game are in seriously dire straits right now, have heard talk of them suspending wages and being unable to get in much in the way of new releases because of bad credit with suppliers. The wages thing might just be scuttlebutt, but certainly I know a couple of people who have been told this week when trying to buy a new game that from now on the only new stock coming in will be for pre-orders.

I don't have a lot of love for Game (for a start they ignored 7 customer service emails I sent them over the course of a couple of months, and that was me trying to give them money) but working in games I'm a bit distressed about the prospect of games having little to no visibility or shelf space on the high street. Game bought out Gamestation so if both go under then that's pretty much specialist games retail dead except for indies, and if the big chains are struggling that badly then I worry how the indies are coping. I guess supermarkets and online sales are killing it off, but supermarkets will only really stock the biggest releases and while hardcore gamers are probably buying all their stuff online nowadays anyway, I'd imagine most more casual or mainstream gamers make most of their purchases wandering into a store and looking around, and I'd imagine that's who a great deal of game sales go to.

The times they are a-changing.

Help! / Waterstones and my Kindle?
07 January, 2012, 07:33:44 PM
Hey all,

Thought with a few people on here owning Kindles someone may be able to help!

I'm new to the ebook thing as I just got mine for xmas, but I bought a couple of ebooks from Waterstones and downloaded the Adobe software that they insist you use to manage the downloads, but I can't get it to recognize my Kindle so I can't actually transfer the books. Have looked online and there were a couple of forum posts which suggested Kindle isn't supported which seems a bit mad, plus I couldn't find anything on the Waterstones FAQs or during the order that suggested that would be the case.

Anyone help me out here, this ebook noob would be eternally grateful as otherwise I've chucked away a tenner!

Games / 24hr gaming marathon for Sick Kids!
14 September, 2011, 09:30:51 PM
Think this post might have been deleted during the server troubles, and I'm halfway to raising my target so going to hit you up with more pleas (please ignore if you read it the first time)!

Will be doing a 24hr gaming marathon from 8am on Saturday October 8th in support of Edinburgh Sick Kids (http://www.edinburghsickkids.org/), and will probably set up a webcam to confirm I'm not cheating by kipping on the job.

Also, I'm keen on maybe picking out an old classic to play from start to finish for part of it, am open to suggestions what that should be. Otherwise I'll just play Max Payne. Again.

So, if you want to, pop over to http://www.justgiving.com/Keith-Thorburn and give some cash to a good cause!

Cheers!

Off Topic / My new music video!
31 July, 2011, 12:58:00 PM
My band You Already Know have done a wee video for 'The Stride' from our album 'Petrol Money', the last one got a good response on here so hope you like the new one. It was shot and edited by Graeme Hutton again (his website address is at the link) who again did a really fantastic job with very little (especially considering we insisted on filming with all the lights off).

Like always I tried to get a 2000AD nod in there by sticking a big badge on my guitar strap but once again it didn't make the cut. Sorry Tharg. Most of my chins are present though.

Off Topic / PWEI live 2011
03 July, 2011, 10:13:41 AM
Just noticed that Pop Will Eat Itself are playing Glasgow this month so seem to be doing the rounds again. I know there's a few fans on here who will know more about it than me, I can't decide whether to head along or not. I'm a big fan of the later stuff they did, but I don't really know enough about them to know whether this is the original line-up or not, although I'd assume Clint Mansell isn't around for it.

Games / Last game played...
11 June, 2011, 09:35:35 AM
Struck me there isn't a thread for this in Games, but there is in movies. Thought it'd be nice to be able to post about a game you just played without having to start a dedicated thread to it.

I just finished Amnesia: Dark Descent last night on the PC, was really good. I'd watched a couple of reaction videos online beforehand, which sold it to me as the most terrifying experience imaginable. It's creepy, and absolutely dripping with atmosphere, but is more about a constant state of unease than all out terror, and didn't brown my trousers the way something like Condemned did. There aren't a lot of games with that atmosphere though, and the gameplay/story are really absorbing (ends a bit flat though). Recommend it, I grabbed it for £12 off Steam and definitely got my money's worth.

Wasn't sure where to pop this link, but most of them are film characters so here seems good! Mainly worth a look because Dredd is in there.

Books & Comics / Missing Beats
17 May, 2011, 12:59:12 PM
New web comic, just a taster at the moment really (I thought there was a link missing but it does just stop quite abruptly) but is pretty intriguing. It was actually brought to my attention because my bands logo appears in it a couple of times (on the main character's shirt and in the record store) which is pretty freaking arsom from my point of view  :D

Games / Alan Moore videogame?
06 May, 2011, 07:47:45 PM
Thought this was interesting development, looks like while he's unhappy with adapting his comics to other mediums he might well be working on something cross-media with a game component. Curious.

Film & TV / Brilliant Simpsons art.
26 April, 2011, 08:16:11 PM
Stumbled on this facebook page today, and it's kept me entertained during a quiet shift. The guys does really incredible fine line renderings of Simpsons characters, and it's not just the pictures that are stunning, but the character descriptions he puts in the comments. He totally nails the characters.

Creative Common / 'Baby In The Bump' art project.
22 March, 2011, 06:45:40 PM
This is my friend's art, she does a variety of stuff, all of it pretty dang awesome (some of her paintings are stunning). This particular project is a series of light-hearted pieces about pregnancy and parenthood and the anxieties involved.

She does print runs and sells them, but has a kickstarter pledge account set up to try and raise the funds for a larger print run, so if you like it and want to support it then you could always give her a pledge.

Here's her website (there's some cracking stuff on there for all tastes):

And if you do fancy pledging some support here's the Kickstarter link:

Bit of an interesting night this, it's being put on by Glasgow PodcArt, kicks off at 8pm and there's gonna be 3 live bands and DJs until 3am. The twist is that each band has to cover a track by each of the other bands as well as a cover of their choice. Cue frantic rehearsals. It's entirely free too, so if you're in Glasgow and want a late pint and some tunes then you can't go wrong.

Ourselves, You Already Know, are playing along with Other People and Carnivores, and as an added bonus Jamie from Oh You Dancer has done an exclusive remix that incorporates all 3 bands and sounds awesome. Anyone through the door gets the download code for that.

PodcArt have all the info, and previews and interviews with all the bands throughout the week (our interview is up already, suffice to say we come across as the imbeciles that we are).

Off Topic / You Already Know - Petrol Money
15 February, 2011, 07:53:24 PM
I know this is spammy but I know there are people on the forum who liked the single, so thought I'd do a little pimping! As seen in previous spam-esque posts, I play guitar in a band called You Already Know. Our second album 'Petrol Money' is properly out physically on 18th April, but you can pre-order now which gets you an immediate download of the album and a short film about it which may/may not be hideously cringe-inducing.

As is posh these days you can opt for a swanko-pack edition which gets you both albums, a bonus disc and I think art prints or something but that part confuses me.

You can order it (and I think you can stream the whole thing for a free taste) at this linky:

http://yaktracks.bandcamp.com/album/petrol-money

Thanks for putting up with my pimpery, hope the music fans here like it (I'll accept any criticism too and take it on the chin whilst inwardly sobbing). Cheers!
