Off Topic / The Wasp Factory.
04 July, 2002, 04:16:40 AM
Col. Marbles has suggested a book club, and this book has been nominated. So this is the first part of the discussion.

Obviously there will be SPOILERS so if you aren't up to speed you'll have to be carefull. I'd suggest we all try to remember to post a big old SPOILER warning at the head of particularly sensitive post.

The next post will be a synopsis of the first third to get the discussion off. If you haven't read up to and including Chapter Four go no further.

Oh, and as it was the Col.'s idea it should really be his turn to nominate a book next time.

General / Re-using covers.
04 July, 2002, 04:12:36 AM
Now obviously this should be done as sparingly as possible but I wondered whether there was any mileage in the idea of re-using covers.

Now before you dismiss this out of hand go and look at the cover of the 1983 2k annual. It's a rather lovely character montage of Rogue, Johnny, Wulf, and Dredd. The artist, apparantly, is someone called Brian Bolland. It's a very striking image and, what's more, perfectly suited to be the cover of an issue of the upcoming run.

It would have to be reworked to fit the size, and to fit the differing cover requirments. Maybe given a snazzy new computer-enhanced lick of paint.

It's a great image. If you're new to the mag you won't have seen it before and probably be impressed (20 year old Bolland still beating the pants off most things).  If you have seen it before then re-using something after 20 years isn't like haveing the same things all the time, and it is a great image. Would it be so bad to see it again?

Even better it might stir memories in lapsed readers who might see it and recognise it. And once they picked it up, who knows, they might buy it. It'd fit in with the 'Yesterdays Future Today' zeitgeist.

Any way what do you think. Obviously it shouldn't be too common an occurance but it's not too bad an idea. And who knows it might even save a couple of bob that could be spent better else where.

General / Favourtie one off character?
02 July, 2002, 11:06:26 PM
I was just wondering what your favourite one off characters might be.

I have a soft spot for Fairly Hyper Man myself. Anyone else got a favourtie character who only cropped up once. Aaron A. Aardvark and Zachary Zzizz are other favourites of mine.

I forgot to say earlier - thanks for the Prog One.

If you could post a list of what specials you are after I'll have a look and see what I've got. I might have some from the period. Let me know.

General / Killing Zone delayed.

Sigh. According to the nice people at the Big Finish credit card ordering place it's now due out on the 15th as opposed to the 1st. Ah well.

General / Wake - A request...
27 June, 2002, 06:23:10 AM
I've noticed that people keep asking you things and you keep supplying their whims.

So I have to ask,
can you fix it for me for Jeanne Garafalo to move next door to me and develop a sudden penchant for Lancastrian Tubby Pedants? Thanks.

News / dxb and Scojo's contract,
17 June, 2002, 06:50:10 AM
I DavidXBrunt promise to read, analyse, and respond to Scojo's scripts (the two posted before the 17th of June).

In return Scojo is to stop harrassing female posters, asking for sex, bothering them, and cyber stalking them. If he breaks the rule he is banned from the board.

If Scojo responds with 'I agree' then he agrees to the terms.

General / Down To Earth
30 May, 2002, 02:30:34 PM
I got up this morning feeling rather down in the mouth - things aren't going to well at work. I made myself a cupper, flicked through the G2, and then sorted through the mail. And what did I find? Tucked away in the adverts and circulars was a familiar padded white envelope.

Big Finish have come up trumps this time and released 'Down To Earth' a week early. Now I've got something to do this morning that'll cheer me up no end. See, it pays to buy from their web-site.

General / Dredd Plus - The collection?
17 May, 2002, 04:52:39 AM
Anybody think a collection of the stories in which Dredd meets another character from the mag would be a good thing?

There's 'Top Dogs' in which Dredd faces off against Johnny and Wulf. 'Hammerstein' which requires no explanation. Prog 900 had a 28(?) tale with Rogue Trooper. Together they make about 90 pages. They could add in the Devlin Waugh story 'Brief Encounter' or something like that.

Maybe they could also have little bios of the characters. It might boost sales on the other collections because there must be people that only know Dredd.

General / The future is now!
04 May, 2002, 03:41:54 AM
News just in from Hartlepool. They've elected a monkey Mayor. We are now officially in the future.

(Okay, it's the local football mascot - H'angus Monkey - so really it's a man dressed in a monkey suit but still...)

It's probably the question that writers are asked the most often - where do you get your cer-azzzy ideas from?

Well now I can answer that. Remember Red Razors? Remember the best bit, his talking horse side-kick, Judge Ed? How did that clever idea of mixing Dredd with the sitcom from the 1950's about a talking horse? Creative imagination?

Well I was reading some back issues the other day. Issues 700 - 705. One of which had a cartoon sent in by a reader of a horse with a judge helmet - caption 'Judge Ed'.

General / Judgement Day of the Dead.
24 April, 2002, 05:38:52 AM
I've just finished reading these two strongly connected stories. I bought 2k when 'Judgement Day' came out so this wasn't new but I was surprised how much I'd forgotten and how good it was. This is pretty good stuff. But where was Anderson? Any thoughts on the story?

When I bought a run of the Meg recently I'd started wondering what the other characters in Dredds world were up to during 'Judgement Day' so when I found out when Armitage 'Day of the Dead' was set I decided to skip forwards and read that. I'm guessing there were some elements of the story that I didn't get because I hadn't read the flashbacks. An I right? What did you all think of it by the way?

General / Progs 700 - 970

Just bought a run of back issues, anyone got any recommendations as to what the best bits are, or where to start?

General / Prog 1287
17 April, 2002, 08:38:09 PM
Anybody got this yet. Some good, some bad, as ever. Spoilers follow. Duh!

I liked Dredd. As with 'The Chief Judges Man' & 'Lost in CyberSpace' the multi-part story turns out to be a good 'un. I liked the down-beat ending. I'm looking forwards to 'Sin City'.

'Attavar' was the same old, same old. Not too bad but the art looks murky. I'll probably read it all in one go when it's finished and then forget all about it.

I liked the design and the characters in 'Future Shocks', I wouldn't be opposed to a return to McGintys, but that's unlikely to happen.

After the last surprisingly good 'Tales of the Telguuth' (or whatever) this is back to the way it has been. It's a promising idea but never pulled off properly.

'Nikolai Dante' ended on a low note for me. The big fight was over in what - a panel? He'll be back.

Nice to see a letters page. And good to see that 'Shakara' is still pulling in letters. That's one tale I'd like to see return.
