Joker's second appearance

I keep reading in publicity for The Dark Knight that the character of The Joker in the movies was based on his first two appearances in the comics. I know that his first appearance was in Batman #1, but when was his second appearance? And does anyone know where I can find plot synopses for both stories? I have tried Googling "Joker comicography" and variations thereof, but to no avail.

Never mind, I found it. Return of the Joker also appeared in Batman #1, a few pages later - surely the fastest sequel ever!
