Pay $29 to for the chance to have your script turned into a copyright-breaking short film, and Adi nicking all the glory for it if it's any good!
You're talking to a forum that's 70% budding comics creators. This probably sounds like a bargain.
So hang on, Gordon—you're saying this means Dredd 2 is definitely going to get made, right?
*runs*
Pity he didn't run this before he made the Dredd thing.
Ah. "Good exposure". Better than getting paid, as we all know.
Interestingly enough, I just realized his production company, 1984, is five minutes walk down the street.

And probably only a small chance of being sued by a major entertainment conglomerate for violating their IP. Result!
I notice the 2nd prize pays 1000 bucks, while the winner gets hee-haw.
1st Place
Grand Prize
$ 100,000*
*Short film production budget for the winning short screenplay or story will be between $20,000 and $100,000 depending on scope and needs of the project as determined by ScreenCraft and Adi Shankar.
So the 'winner' doesn't get a say in how they spend their prize?

No, but "winning writer will receive personal introductions to top producers, managers, agents and studio executives."
I can't think of a worse fate.

So..............Exposure Bucks, then?
The bit-coin of Hollywood.
That seems spectacularly pointless - I can't see much appeal in writing something then handing it over to someone else.
I can only speak for myself, but it's more about the whole experience, having a bit of fun and getting to grips with the whole process.
I see what he's trying to do with the URL. But all I can think of when I see it is: What's a Bootle Gun?
I guess even Kickstarter told him to get lost.

Yeah, I mean if he was going to allow you to create the short yourself with his budget that would at least be something you could justify. What a crock of bullshit. 3rd Prize cracks me up.
Shankar can shove this up his mascara lined arse.

Sorry for the double response to this, Steve- was just thinking about this on the drive in. It really sums up a breathtaking arrogance on Shankar's part here, a well-trodden cliche via Los Angeles and 'Hollywood'. Namely: "Yeah, go create it and write it, whatever, but really as the non-creative part of all this- I'M the important element here." Absolute fucking nonsense, innit?
That's not to disparage all producers. Some get it, some don't. I've worked on a lot of big studio stuff and smaller more low-key over the years and seen the difference between a good producer and a bad one. At the end of the day, and I'm sure you can agree with this for both good and bad, Steve, but creating something like this- on whatever scale it is- thrives better on a healthy collaboration rather than one side or the other completely taking charge. (There's very much an argument to be made that creatives need a non-creative producer to keep things on track but I suspect that's a discussion for a different thread...)
you could mark your entry "second prize only please"
You have been reading Damage Report haven't you? :o
Does Hee-Haw translate into english? ;)

I absolutely agree - I seem to recall Alex Garland making a good argument for the collaboration.

I've always thought, fancifully perhaps, that the role of a good producer was equivalent to that of a good editor in comics: to encourage the creatives to do their best work, with a minimum of meddling beyond a little... steering to keep the creatives on the project's agreed course, and otherwise ensuring that the creative teams are as untroubled as possible by the day-to-day shit that's essential to
getting the thing done, but which has nothing to do with the creative process.
I've just pitched my Max Normal/Shaft crossover!
Wish me luck!!!!!!! ;)

Yep. They also have to weigh in with the unfortunate and thankless tightrope walk of watching the budget and making sure that whatever the creatives are up to somehow lines up with all that. But once again, a decent producer finds a way to walk that line and keep the machine working.

The winner of the illustrious prize has been announced (https://screencraft.org/2016/12/06/announcing-2016-bootleg-universe-contest-winner-finalists/).
A not-so-happy entrant speaks out -
My Shitty Screencraft Experience and What Could Have Been Done Better (https://www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/comments/5h3lq3/my_shitty_screencraft_experience_and_what_could/?st=iwtp93ru&sh=b1d4eae4)
I see the 'prize' for the 50 runners-up is the amazing opportunity to pay them another $50-$100 (on top of the $29 per script entry) to buy discounted software.
Zarjaz!
