General / Re: Things that went over your head...

Just catching up on this thread. I didn't get Suzi Nine Millimetre either.

In hindsight it's a massive clue that Azimuth is part of SinDex.

But of course I was blissfully unaware of that until it was explicitly revealed.

You got to wonder if DAbnett is sitting there going "I put all this effort into laying out all these clues and they were just wasted on you lot"?

Maybe he was misremembering after the horrors of being on Titan.

BUT

does that mean his whole revenge plot was targeted the wrong person / based on an incorrect premise?

Great Prog, despite one story I don't really like and one I don't really understand.

Dredd: after last week I didn't see how this would wrap up in just one week, but it does it really well. And I have to say this is PJ's best ever art for me. Previously it was a bit too cartoony for me, in a sort of Anthony Williams kind of way. But now it just looks great.

Deadworld very soon entered Order levels of incomprehensiblity for me, but having really tried to  pay attention for the last few weeks, I'm getting it more than previously. But not completely. And I think my switch to digital a year ago helps with that, as I can very easily bring up previous episodes.

Helium: this is probably the most I've enjoyed an Egdington-D'Israeli strip.

Devil's Railroad. Not for me. Sorry. I just don't care about any of the characters. And if it's meant to be a comedy, I'm not getting any of the jokes.

Feral and Foe. I just love this. Always have done. It's pretty much a perfect 2000AD strip. Colin has described this as DAbnett's weakest modern strip. I can't agree with that - there's no such thing, they're all great and this is as good as any (apart from Brink obviously).

Quote from: Dash Decent on 09 November, 2023, 03:05:59 AMJudge Dredd by Brian Bolland: Masterpiece Edition - Paperback, 160 pages, 18th June 2024

Reprinting the immediately sold-out Judge Dredd by Brian Bolland Apex Edition this Masterpiece Edition is expanded and reformated for a wider audience.

Judge Dredd by Brian Bolland: Masterpiece Edition – Acclaimed as one of the greatest artists of his generation for his work on such titles as Camelot 3000 and Batman: The Killing Joke, Brian Bolland's work on Judge Dredd helped catapult both the series and Bolland himself to international acclaim.

This book will include pages from the Judge Dredd epics; The Cursed Earth, The Day the Law Died, The Judge Child Quest, and Bolland's masterpiece Judge Death Lives. Also included is a gallery of covers ranging from 2000 AD to the Judge Dredd reprints published by Eagle Comics which brought Brian to the attention of American readers and show off Bolland's inventiveness and sardonic humour.

Sorry - late to this thread.

I am wondering what "expanded and reformatted" means?

Does that mean there will be additional content over and above what is in the "normal" Apex edition?

Having forked out, what was it, £80?, £100? already, I not keen to buy a slightly different version.

Other Reviews / Re: The 2000ad art of Mick McMahon

One thing the Apex edition highlights is, how poor the reproduction is in the Warrior's Dawn collected edition, in places. And it's not just the McMahon pages, but some Belardinelli ones as well. Thinking we now need a high quality edition, like the forth coming Nemesis ones. There's not many things I'd buy yet again to get better reproduction, but early Slaine and early Nemeis definitely fall into that category.

A truly great episode of Dredd. Agree it probably Mr Holden's finest, if not yet Philip Janet's.

Of the rest only Feral and Foe is doing it for me.

And I think this recent run of Progs has the brightest colours ever. Even with the muted tones of Fall of Deadworld.

Quote from: Magnetica on 20 October, 2023, 11:47:34 PMPlus I guess:
Ron Smith Dredd
Carlos Dredd, Stront and Stainless Steel Rat
Colin McNeill America and Mechanismo
Henry Flint Day of Chaos
+1 for Colin MacNeil's colour painted works - the above plus anything from Chopper, the Dredd episode Firepower, and the Stront stories Top Dogs and Final Solution... yes please.

Hmmm building up quite a list here!

Yes good shout on McNeil's work on Top Dogs and the Final Solution. Especially Top Dogs - it's one of his finest. I wasn't keen though on his early Stront b&w stuff, for which I'm guessing the brief was "make it look like Carlos".

Quote from: nxylas on 22 October, 2023, 04:14:02 PMLooking at Barney, his first credit on there (in alphabetical order) is a 5-part Ace Trucking story. Weird, I have no memory of anyone other than Belardinelli ever drawing Ace Trucking, apart from recent revivals.

It wasn't reprinted in the Ultimate Collection, but it is in the Rebellion Ace Trucking Vol 1 TPH.

I agree with what JohnW said about it. It was a similar thing to when Gibson did a couple of episodes of Strontium Dog in Starlord instead of Carlos.

I've got all the Apex editions published so far, and store them upright in the original boxes between my bedside cabinet and the wall.

I have the second McMahon volume on pre-order and a bit like PJ, forgot that and in a panic almost ordered a second one just before pre-orders closed.

I also have the IDW Dredd art book, but really it's not a patch on Apex editions. It has disappointingly shocking reproduction, especially on the notoriously badly reproduced Father Earth episode with some droids sitting around in the power plant discussing the Mega City mayoral election.

As for other Apex editions I'd like to see:

Glenn Fabry Slaine, especially The King
Kev O'Neill Nemesis (I understand this is in the works)
Bryan Talbot Nemesis, especially the bits at the end of the world

Plus I guess:
Ron Smith Dredd
Carlos Dredd, Stront and Stainless Steel Rat
Colin McNeill America and Mechanismo
Henry Flint Day of Chaos

I am not though planning on getting the Steve Dillon one; not entirely sure why but I just  don't like his art as much as I probably should.

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 25 September, 2023, 09:54:55 AMBTW, did anyone else get their subscription gift? Mine arrived with the Prog (unlike last time). A nice selection of Cam Kennedy Dredds, one Rogue Trooper tale, and a handful of covers (including some Sláines).

Having swapped to a digital subscription at the start of the year, I no longer qualify for these; which is a little annoying. But only a little as I probably own all of the content anyway. But still it would be nice if there was a way for digital subscribers to get these.

I thought the art on Dredd was a bit strange. It had a bit of an Arthur Ranson feel to it, but not as good.  But the Lawmasters were bizarre; this was the first time I've seen a Judge's helmet have a chin strap and that was only on the cadets', not the full Judges; but strangest of all was the way the name badges were on top one minute and then under the shoulder pads the next and how big the shoulder pad and eagle were on Dredd, so much so they were touching on the last page.

General / Re: How do you like your Sinister Dexter?
06 September, 2023, 11:02:40 AM
I'm still a fan. I like it best when it's given a decent run of episodes, rather than seemingly be used to fill gaps between runs of other series.

Which it is getting now with Azimuth.

I also like it best when there is a lot of interaction with supporting characters like Billy, Rockey etc.

One thing I think is strange, is that even though  the strip has been around for 28 years, I still don't think the character of Dexter has been developed that much / I still don't feel I know him very well.

Just read all the episodes of Portals and Black Goo on one sitting and it a) makes perfect sense and b) is actually pretty good.

For reasons I won't bore you with I'm reading my Progs on my phone at the moment.

At that resolution I assumed the cover was by Jock, until I read the comments here.

Quote from: The Corinthian on 16 August, 2023, 08:26:18 AMI've come to blank the Regened Progs but there's still nothing more dispiriting in a new prog than seeing the phrase "...returns in two weeks' time!" at the end of a strip.

Portals & Black Goo hasn't been doing anything for me but is it hinting at an appearance by [REDACTED FAMOUS COMICS CHARACTER I CAN'T NAME BECAUSE THE SITE WON'T LET ME INSERT SPOILERS ANY MORE] at the end of this prog's episode? Tomlinson haswritten for him before in Tooth (sort of).

Please elaborate, perhaps over PM!!

I'm assuming it's your cousin...sort of 😁.
