In response to Wakes last comments, if someone is visiting ebay I would expect them to know what they are looking for and to have some inkling of it's worth. Ignorance of the law is no defence and ignorance in any situation is no defence, we can't hold ourselves responsible for someone else's ignorance. I remember my old Ma saying to me "you can ask but you might not get" well some people ask and do get; it's just trying your luck.

As long as you don't lie or try to deceive, then you can't feel responsible for every other person on the planet, we all learn by our mistakes and it might sound harsh but I would like to finish by quoting my old Ma again

"I would sell my own poo to the highest bidder, even though I know it aint worth shit!!"

You can't help but love her!!!

Thank you for listening.

In answer to the Watchers response regarding kids not being able to afford back issues, I started reading comics when I was about 7 or 8, I certainly didn't start by collecting back issues, my dad used to take me to the newsagents and I'd buy three or four comics that were on the shelves, I didn't start collecting until years later and buy then I was hooked. As a teenager I bought the back issues that I could afford and as my earnings increased so did the prices of the back issues that that I purchased. I didn't stop collecting because Action Comics number 1 was to expensive for me, I just bought in the price bracket that I could afford and dreamt about owning a copy of A/C number 1. I'm now 36 and own copies of 2000AD number 1, 2 & 3 with free gift for which I paid over ?300 four years ago, that was my choice and I certainly don't feel bad that there are possibly teenagers out there reading 2000AD now and dreaming about owning a copy of the comic that introduced the appearance of their favourite character, Judge Dredd.

To satisfy my curiosity I remember buying a reprint of Action Comics number one and thinking how crap it was in comparison to the comics of the day. There are teenagers now who are able to get reprints of 2000AD back issues and they are probably thinking how crap they were in comparison to the progs that are being printed now.

My point is that the comic industry is not being harmed because a 25-year-old comic just sold on ebay for ?370, the same as the art industry is not being harmed because a Picasso sold for thirty million pounds, anyone can go to Athena and buy a print and dream about owning the real thing.

Finally in response to Wake, why should it annoy you what reserve sellers put on their lots, exercise your free will and don't bid, if it sells then good luck to them, if it doesn't then they still have to pay ebay their commission for allowing them to try and auction it, they will then learn their lesson, namely that the market wouldn't stand their prices and that the next time they put it on, it should be cheaper.

Now I really should go to bed and dream about the X-men number 1 that I should have bought when it was valued at ?50, who would have thought that they were going to make such a successful franchise out of them at the time.

Anyway, goodnight all.

I might as well add my two pence worth, since I only seem to get caught up in discussions around the value of early 2000ADs. Firstly no one is screwing anyone for as much money as possible, sellers put their comics on ebay and collectors/investors bid against each other and not against their free will. Ultimatly they pay what they think the comics are worth. The only augument that I hear comic readers putting forward is that progs were designed for people to read and not collect and that they should'nt be hidden away in some box somewhere as that would be some kind of crime, and would also be denying readers the chance the enjoy early editions. In response to that argument I would like to say:

1) First and early editions of most popular/important/historical printed material is considered collectable and is collected/preserved for prosperity.

2) They go up in value since when they first came out no one considered that they might become so popular and when they do, collectors seek them out paying ever increasing prices because they are slowly being taken off the market.

3) Where 2000AD is concerned, this should not be considered such a crime by readers, since 2000AD  progs 1, 2 & 3 have been reprinted many times and are available in various formats and they are the ones that are attracting such high prices (?350+ with their free gifts)

4) If you really want to keep re-reading those same comics again and again then they are available at affordable prices in these other formats.

5) As everyone knows the early 2000ADs were printed on crap paper, if everyone just read them and chucked them under the coffee table, then these pieces of our comic history would be just history. I've said this before, collectors are doing us a favour, they are paying sky high prices for comics that were mostly read and chucked under the coffee table, therefore they are rare, especially in mint condition and with their free gifts. They are an investment as well as a hobbie and there's no getting around that fact, you'll get a higher return than the stock market or building society will give you and as far as I know comic prices have never gone down. When collectors pay high prices you know that they will be looked after, just like antiques and art. If there were no comic collectors then you can be sure that early editions of 2000AD would not have been preserved and no one would be able to enjoy them.

Remember collectors/investors are doing no harm by buying and selling comics amongst themselves, they are preserving the comics for future generations.

The final and most important point I want to make is; if you want to read comics, then there are plently of new comics coming onto the market everyday, if you wanted to spend your life reading comics then you would never have to read a back issue again. If you do want to read a back issue, then you will have to approach a collector/investor and pay him for the trouble that he has gone to by bagging it and preserving it.

Remember investors/collectors are your friends!!

I have just been scouring ebay for 2000AD related merchandise and Prog 2 with the free gift has come up again and this time it has reached ?370, bidding ends in 4 hours (see link below) Will I ever be able to find a 2nd copy for investment purposes, if anyone out there has a copy in mint condition and with the free gift, I would be willing to pay ?150.00.

This is my site and I have just got the patent for a picture frame that you can use to display your CDs, so I developed the site to sell them over the internet. You can visit the site via the link below, I would be interested to hear anyones comments, positive or negative. I'm posting this again since I have updated the site and would like to know what people think

General / Re: Hot News!!!! New Movie Dredd i...
04 August, 2002, 04:12:22 PM
I think this article may be out of date, it seems to imply that the release date is 2002 which is not possible and as mentioned there is a conection to Egmont, who as far as I know don't have any links to 2000AD or Dredd anymore.

The film may have been in the pipeline for longer than we thought and Rebellion just took over from where Egmont left off, although I have heard that Jean Reno was being considered for the part of Dredd (that would be cool), I don't know what part Christian Slater would have in the movie.

Can anyone else shed some light on this?

This is not related to 2000AD but I have just ordered a Discarray from www.discarray.com and it's great. It displays the actual discs from your CD collection, most of them have artwork on the front and you can display 8, 12 or 16 CDs. It really looks cool above the Hi-Fi. I don't know why I am posting this here but it's a new product and I was so pleased with it that I thought I would help them out by advertising it. Just click on the link below.

News / 2000AD No 2 set to hit ?500
17 June, 2002, 05:23:28 PM
I know I've brought this up before but I've just been out bid on on ebay for 2000AD No 2, once again! (I have a mint copy with the free gift already, but want one as an investment) A non-mint copy, with free gift sold yesterday for ?310 on ebay. It won't be long before this hits ?500, once the two new movies come out. I just thought that I would mention this to see if anyone from the Prog 534 club would like to change sides. There is only one club and that's the prog No 2 club (with free gift) Incidently, the record paid on ebay for Prog No 2 is ?365.00.

I think the circulation was around 50,000 - 100,000 back then. I've had a simmilar interest in number 1208 because I can't find a copy. Why are you interested in issue 1?

I have been trying to find a copy of 2000AD number 1208 for over a year now, but no joy (Thanks for your help Blackblood, but I was outbid on ebay) Does anyone know the actual reason that this comic is so hard to find? Is it true that there was a problam with the printers and there were only about one thousand copies run?
