In case anyone might be interested a new BattleTech game is being developed for the PC (and Mac and Linux).

They have a Kickstarter for the game and have got the funding for a complete single player campaign so far. Which is great, but they are no where near the goal for a full PVP online game.
I did play the demo for MechWarrior 2 but became enamoured by other FPS games Halo, Doom 3 etc so never went back. This looks more like top down game play so of no interest to me. Glad it's found an audience though. There were a whole slew of books but I only read one which I think was about some young Mech Pilot being overthrown by his relatives plus fighting some rival House. Reminded me of Warhammer pre Horus Hersesy.
Perhaps one day there might be an attempt to make a movie of the BattleTech Universe though I suspect Hollywood would consider it too niche a genre for Marvel style profits.
