The list we've lost is all the most recent posts from most recent to less recent - 10 a page with the ability to navigate backwards to earlier posts by clicking on a page number. This allows you to see very quickly what is being discussed across the board
Updated Topics just lists which topic was most recently updated in each subforum, which is much more of a pain to navigate through and see what conversations are going on. Even a list of the ten most recent topics to be updated is still more of a pain to navigate through to each topic.
Might not be for everyone, and can lead to spoilers, but us spoiler happy types much prefer to be able to see the posts, whatever the subject, all in a neat reverse chronological order!

The navigation bar (Shop, Podcasts, etc) isn't "Responsive" like the rest of the style, so on a mobile phone it runs off the screen making navigation and viewing very difficult.

I get the same thing in portrait but it works when turning the phone on its side into widescreen. The same thing works with unread posts/updated topics. iPhone 11 if that's any use.
Cheers
Same story as NapalmKev. Different phone.
It's better if you tilt the phone to landscape but still not right. It's because it needs to collapse into a "hamburger menu" below a certain screen width.
If your screen is wide enough to accommodate the width of the navbar then it will look ok.
Put simply someone added the standard 2000AD navbar to the new forum style but that navbar isn't a responsive design so it doesn't work on small screens. It suggests it hasn't been properly tested with a mobile phone. Not trying to criticise, just pointing it how it most likely got like this.
FWIW, the responsive design should be easy enough to hack with a couple of lines of CSS. I outlined a potential fix here: https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?msg=1097775

What Leigh said.
"Active Topics" was simply a list of all posts, from all topics, in chronological order of the latest post. This is especially useful for people like me, who suffer from acute
l'esprit de l'escalier.

I still see no change possible on the look and feel page. I can access the page you link to here and see two theme choices (assume both are the same and one is just the default). There are options to change from light to dark but this does nothing.

Quote from: Richard on 07 February, 2023, 01:05:50 AMAnother vote to bring Active Topics back please.
Yes please! I find the whole forum a bit unworkable without it, frankly.
I can't log in on Chrome or on my iphone- I just get "your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again".
Posting this via Edge which seems to work, will try later on Firefox.
When viewing on a small screen, those three links at the top are still not clickable. They are present but they are not actually links.
Still can't log in on my phone, but at least the ever-inventive new reasons are keeping me amused. I had something about exceeding my log-in attempts (on my first go) the other day,and now I'm getting "Sorry Guest, you are banned from using this forum!" (the cheerful punctuation doesn't help BTW)
The punctuation is something.
Not only is there the happy exclamation mark at the end, but the lack of comma after the 'sorry' makes it look like 'Sorry Guest' is your user name.
'Hey there, Sorry Guest! We don't want your sort round here anymore! Cheery-bye!'
I'm really missing the Active Topics page. The rest of the updates, I think, are good - but Active Topics going A.W.O.L. is powerful frustratin'.
Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 12 February, 2023, 05:19:06 PMI'm really missing the Active Topics page.
When I joined I was told that Active Topics cost extra. I'd already paid Molch-R top dollar to get what he assured me was one of the last vacancies in the forum, so I've learned to get by with just the basic functions.
That doesn't surprise me. When I first joined, I was told a prerequisite to membership involved owning shares in the 2KAD Amalgamated Flanges, Rims, and Ponglebars Corporation (CEO, Molch-R) and that, in a stroke of good fortune, several of these shares had ejaculated onto the market that very morning due to a hostile takeover of Scojo.
I still have not received the share certificates. Or a receipt. Or, indeed, my promised free gift of a platinum plated 1/12 scale sculpture of Pat Mills on a unicycle.
And now the Active Topics page is gone, too.
Bloody Rockerfellers. (Well, ya godda' blame sumbuddy, right?)
You might want to look at an upgrade.
I just got a special offer on the Executive Package, so for only £49.95 per month I can now post after dark, and also my posts automatically go to the top of the Recent Posts list.
Not bad, eh?
Bloody favouritism.
I've been here fifteen years, they only put my avatar the right way up last month...
It no longer shows how many times a thread has been viewed.
We've been logging these issues but are any of them actually getting fixed? I still can't log in on my phone or work computer ("your session timed out while posting")
Haven't read a prog for months because the subs people can't fucking sort it out and take 4 weeks to reply to an e-mail; and now the forum won't let me in except on one device.
After 45 years, I am honestly on the verge of saying fuck 'em and abandoning 2000ad altogether.

Seriously though, none of the issues reported here have been addressed.
I might regret this, but I feel like it's my only chance to be able to squeeze any more enjoyment out of being a member of this forum, so I'm just going to be upfront about something.
We're never going to get along with everyone in life, and (in my experience, which I realize is just mine), I found that communicating with a particular person was just making me feel low. So, I blocked them.
Then, when I'm looking at threads, I just see their avatar and the message "You are ignoring this user."
The only trouble is that if I look at "Recent posts", it doesn't do that - it shows the full post. So, sometimes, I accidentally notice that they're trying to interact with me - often in what I consider to be goading, up-for-a-rumble, ways. And then they started using an avatar gif that was a rapid, difficult to ignore animation.
I thought I might get away with neutrally placing a request up on this thread to block avatar gifs - but they've noticed and are now following my posts around on other threads and trying to interact with me.
You know who you are. Lots of people like you. I don't (because when I interact with you, it leaves me feeling low). Please leave me alone. Or perhaps I just need to stop using the board. I'll figure out which it is based on your actions.
PM me and we can sort this out like adults.
In the meantime, I will change my avatar* as a sign of good faith.
*Which I've used in the past and was not chosen just to annoy you.
I can no longer login using FireFox. I am forced to use MS Edge. I get a variety of blank screens and error screen session time outs when trying to authenticate with FireFox. Edge goes in no worries. So this is the only site I use Edge for. You now have a special place :-) (although one I would not personally be proud of ;-) )
Chrome works as well
Firefox is working fine for me.
Would clearing out old cookies do any good?
The new forum skin looks nice, but the decreased functionality has coincided with me being pretty down on the contents of the comics to make me use it even less, I'm afraid.
I know other users have different browsing habits but, for me, the "updated topics" option is no substitute for "active topics" and makes the site a lot less usable because:
- It only shows topics with an unread post. Once you read it and go back to the list that topic is fallen from page, no more to rise forever! Makes it a lot harder to quickly read the new posts then go back and reply to topics you're interested in.
- It doesn't actually show all the updated topics. A few days ago I realised that I hadn't seen a Prog review thread for a while and took a look from the main menu. Haven't done an exhaustive check, but the "SPOILER" sub-forums definitely aren't included.
Quote from: scrotnig on 07 February, 2023, 08:29:29 PMWhen viewing on a small screen, those three links at the top are still not clickable. They are present but they are not actually links.
You might already have found this, but the links will work if you tilt your phone to landscape. I guess there's some invisible formatting element extending over them in portrait.

any news or advice on this? Can currently only log in on one of my three usual devices
Ohhhh the issue with the site not working on my home network might be over. I've been able to login on my tablet tonight - fingers crossed.
Now all I have to whine about is the lack of spoiler tags.
I wonder if you could cheat a little and just make the text the background color so people can't see it unless they highlight it?
That's a bit like a spoiler. I'm not sure the background is always a predictable color, though. Sometimes, it's a desaturated yellow for the most recent post.
QuoteMaybe, if the quote box has a standard color, you could hide stuff in there.
Ultimately, whoever the web guy is - if they can get him back for another job shadow - they could install something that makes the spoiler tags work again from here: https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=mods;search=Spoiler
Or - you could make your spoiler text difficult to read by tagging the f*ck out of it.
What about spoiler text (http://vovek-sent-me) that's hidden as a fake URL?
If you right-click and Inspect this image, you'll see I hid a secret message in the alt code:

Hi Guys,
Have you tried "Recent Posts" as a replacement for Active Topic ?
We have found an issue related to old accounts being banned because of "forever" cookies.
This has been addressed by changing cookie. What might have been happening is that that old forever cookie was encrypted using old tech and during website access it would trigger "failed logins" and account ban at the end.
Hopefully this will resolve that issue.
Cheers
Quote from: WebAdmin on 13 April, 2023, 08:56:56 AMHi Guys,

Yes. It's nowhere near as good.
I've forgotten exactly what the difference was, but they are not the same, and Active Topics was much more useful.
Login Forever doesn't seem to be working, as I seem to have re-login every so often - once a week I guess.
Forever = 1 week
Quote from: broodblik on 21 April, 2023, 12:57:25 PMForever = 1 week
It used to work. I went "years" without being logged out. Generally only if I reset all my cookies.

yeah me too. And I still can't log in on my phone at all - I just get "your session timed out while posting"
Has anyone else noticed this issue today or is it just me? I am normally permanently logged in, but I came here and found I was logged out, and when I tried to log in it kept saying I couldn't, and suggesting I check my cookie settings. But I haven't changed them, and other websites where I am still logged in are working fine. (Sometimes it says "Verification questions not configured properly. Please report this error to an administrator.")
After a few attempts I finally did manage to log in somehow (even though I didn't try doing anything different), but then every time I move to another page I get logged out again! (Posting this message was a chore!)
Yep I was fine until on the bus on the way home on this device and my mobile but having got home am having significent issues. Have just managed to log back in but we'll see how it goes!

I'm having problems posting longer ... well posts I guess. Used to be able to add things of up to 20000 characters and am regularly trying to add posts be around 15,000 - 18,000 character but lately I'm having to break posts of these lengths into 4 or 5 parts ... now many would say I should go on less but I'm on a role here and stubbornly determined.
Has the character limit been reduced - is this something that could be increased again or is it part of anti spam measures or similar?
I generally break my longer posts up into chunks under 3,500 words, if memory serves. I think that's always been about the limit, but I haven't posted anything super long for ages.
Re admin/spam, I've not been getting notifications for some reason. I've gone through some recent ones but will have to tackle the queue in chunks. If there's anything pressing, please email me.
Amusingly, having just worked my way back deep into 2023's reports, the forum kicked me out, claimed I was spamming and attempted to ban me.
See, now I'm feeling bad.
