Books & Comics / How do you read your comic?
28 October, 2014, 12:32:53 PM
Note that's HOW, not *where*, I don't want to picture half of you sitting on the bog reading it whilst taking a dump!

Do you read it all in one sitting? From front cover to back? Make it last a day or two reading one story at a time? Read it in order they are printed, or choose your favourite to read first or save your fave 'til last?

I always read Dredd first then pick and choose the lesser strips in order building to a thrill powered overload with my fave - currently Stickleback.

What about you?

Books & Comics / SHAKY KANE draws El Bigote!
19 October, 2014, 06:29:54 PM

The brilliant Shaky Kane contributes the cover to the latest PARAGON, depicting the undead Mexican bandit El Bigote!

par·a·gon n. 1. A model of excellence or perfection of a kind; a peerless example

And this British anthology comic lives up to that definition;
Jikan, the time-travelling demon hunter, by Mark Howard, El Chivo and John Caliber;
Winston Bulldog the anthropomorphic defender of the skies of Blighty by Jason Cobley, Stephen Prestwood and HdE;
L'il Ganesh the rhyming adventures of the young Hindu God by Davey Candlish and Jim Cameron;
El Bigote the undead Mexican bandit by Locust, El Chivo and Bolt;
and Spencer Nero the 1930s British agent with a fascination for ancient Rome by Greg Meldrum and Jim Cameron.

All behind a cover by Shaky Kane (with inks by Jim Campbell and colours by Owen Watts) - this 32 page anthology is not to be missed!

Available from http://www.lulu.com/content/15248285 for only £2.50

If you've bought a copy of PARAGON before, then you know how good this comic is. If you haven't, then why not give it a go? It's called PARAGON for a reason!

Creative Common / PARAGONcomic needs YOU!
29 September, 2014, 09:10:55 AM
As some of you may know, I publish a brilliant small press comic called PARAGON.
I'm constantly on the lookout for contributors and at the minute I'm looking for a quality letterer to take over duties on the Bulldog strip

and if any decent artist wants a crack at drawing a time-travelling demon hunter Samurai in an alternative 80s Britain with a Viking companion, I'd love to hear from you!

Being small press, there's no pay I'm afraid but you will get a printed comp copy to impress your friends with.
PM me if interested!  :)

Books & Comics / Jikan - Leviathan
23 June, 2014, 08:01:48 PM
For those who haven't read Jikan before, he's a time-travelling demon-hunting samurai - one reviewer described it as "as if Akira Kurasawa did Doctor Who".

This is the first part of a weekly webcomic strip (I'm reprinting the first few episodes - from 2012 - so that everyone can catch up before we get to the new stuff)

Creative Common / LETTERER needed!
17 November, 2013, 09:23:56 AM
Anyone up for doing some lettering for the next issue of PARAGONcomic?

I've got a couple of scripts needing some quality talent applied so that I can get the next issue out in time for Christmas. Unfortunately (for me) my regular chaps are too busy with other projects to contribute at the moment. Being small press, there's no pay involved but you will get a comp printerd copy of the comic for your efforts to impress your friends with  :)

If anyone can help out at such short notice, please PM me.

Cheers!

Has anyone bought this yet? Hardback collections of all the comic strips produced over the years of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space 1999, etc. that appeared in Century 21, Look-In et al. At 1.99 for the first issue which has three Thunderbirds stories illustrated by the great Frank Bellamy, it's worth a punt! Personally, I can't wait for the John Burns and Martin Asbury illustrated stories of Space 1999 from Look-In from the 70's

CLiNT is dead. Strip is missing in action and there is a whole thread here on the 2000AD forum lamenting recent progs.
So where do you go for an action anthology these days?

Cover by Matt Soffe

PARAGON has 36 pages of action packed self contained stories featuring recurring characters. And one serial.

#14 sees the extra length finale of the Icarus Dangerous serial by Dirk Van Dom and Stephen Prestwood

Saved from drowning, transformed into a true winged hero by alien Artist Meriope, and catapulted into a universe far from home, the legendary Icarus joins Meriope and a crew of fellow 'mythically-enhanced' beings on a mission to wrest an entire planet from the clutches of Artist-gone-bad Callista. Reaching the surface, the gang find themselves hopelessly outnumbered by the hoard of creatures Callista has created to defend herself, and lose their battles one-by-one. With Meriope taken by Callista for purposes unknown, it now falls to a grievously-injured, wingless Icarus, together with pixie-sized companion Pickaxe and stick-girl Mynx, to complete the mission and put a stop to Callista's nefarious scheme. But what exactly IS her scheme? And how will its revelation impact on our fledgling boy-turned-hero? Who lives, who dies, who flies - find out in the concluding chapter of "Icarus Dangerous"!

The Jikan Chronicles continue with the time travelling demon hunting samurai returning to Japan to find futuristic anthropomorphic alligator aliens with laser whips have invaded!
Check out the Mignola inspired art of Davey Candlish in this adventure penned by Dirk Van Dom

Tom Proudfoot and George Coleman have agreed to continue the adventures of The Major within the pages of PARAGON and here we have the first episode reprinted from last years amazing Halloween comic AAIIEEE!!!
Expect more from the Ambassador from Hell soon!

Spencer Nero - the British adventurer and Government agent who finds inhuman strength whenever he dons the Janus mask has two stories this time round;
The light hearted Hour of the Heron by the original team of Greg Meldrum and Dave Candlish

and the altogether darker tale of the Locked Door - what happens when Spencer takes a step to the dark side?
Who can stop the inhuman power of the Janus mask? By Greg Meldrum and James Corcoran

36 A4 pages of all action adventure, this issue comes with a free sketch card by one of the artists - whose will you get?

Events / daveycandlish IS Forrest Gump!
11 September, 2013, 08:58:02 PM
By no means as impressive as Bolt's fire walking, but I'll be doing the Great North Run half marathon on Sunday.
I do a lot of running (anyone who sees my posts on facebook will know all about this!) but rarely do a sponsored event - this one, however, I'm running in aid of a charity called Get Kids Going! who provide mobility equipment for disabled children. As my nephew has cerebral palsy it seemed a good choice of charity to run for.

If you feel you could help in anyway, big or small, I have a Just Giving page set up
http://t.co/tN5dFefvoT

or you can even help by texting your donation; just text SNOB70 then a space then an amount e.g £1, to 70070 - although any amount is very gratefully received.

Thanks to the wonderful people who have already donated when I plugged this on facebook - if anyone here can help this worthy charity it would be very gratefully received  :)

Cheers!

Books & Comics / Love for Small Press
26 July, 2013, 08:56:27 PM
It's been heartening to see such a positive response from the folk here when the Dogbreath chaps put out a call to arms, but did you know that Zarjaz and Dogbreath aren't the only small press comics produced by folk on these boards? In fact some of the contributors to those fine publications can often be found producing work elsewhere.

Just launched yesterday, here is the latest comic from the PARAGON stable - Cushing & Sons

Written by Mark Howard (aka the Legendary Shark) - the pen behind the brilliantly epic Flesh tale in Zarjaz recently and illustrated by daveycandlish (with cover colours by Jim Cameron and lettered by John Caliber) this is inspired by our love for the old Hammer Horror films of our youth, as Mark puts it in his introduction;

I decided to build my own fantasy world based on a fusion of the Hammer films and the actors who so gloriously made them what they were. When I realised that there was a legitimate chronological gap between the films The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires and Dracula: AD 1972 which just cried out to be filled, my massive ego told me that I was just the writer to fill it.
And so I stole the Van Helsing character and changed his surname to Cushing in honour of the Man Himself, set my sights on the early 20th Century to cash in on that whole Indiana Jones vibe and then just let rip.

So when I saw the script I decided to try for a Paul Grist vibe to the art

And who wouldn't want to read an adventure story of hunting were-lions in Africa?

This 32 pager has been designed to be read on an e-reader but as it is a pdf, it can be read on any machine or tablet capable of downloading it. Did I mention it's FREE?!!

I'd love to know what you think of it - you can download a copy from
http://www.lulu.com/shop/dave-candlish/cushing-sons-ebook/ebook/product-21129866.html

It is also available as an A5 printed version - squarebound, like a Commando comic - for £2 +p&p for those who prefer things old school
http://www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?contributorId=785432

Have a read and let me know what you think - we already have Book Two planned, so there will be more adventures for Cushing & Sons - monster hunters!

Books & Comics / New webcomic - Leviathan
13 January, 2013, 07:23:59 PM
Buried in the depths of this forum are the first few episodes of this, but rather than dig up an old thread I thought I'd start afresh, revamp them and then post the new ones up.

For those who don't know, Jikan is a time travelling demon hunter of whom I've published several adventures.

And this one is set... well, you'll see!
