Title: Space Bastards Vol 2 on Kickstarter
Post by: Trooper McFad on 22 January, 2021, 07:22:44 AM
I picked up Vol 1 at lawless 2019 so it's been a long wait for Vol 2. The book and art are beautifully big to go with the big price. I enjoyed this and will be forking out for Space Bastards Vol 2 which is drawing by our very own Langley & MacNeil and with the big page format this should be pretty awesome.

Hopefully I've put the link up correctly.

Forgot to say Bisley helped with Vol 1 and Boo Cook has contributed in both👍🏻

Unless I'm mistaken , isn't that Jim Campbell on letters?

I'm keen on this, but postage to the UK is an absolute killer - $45 for both volumes, with VAT on top - so I may need to wait on paperback versions (hopefully later this year?)

Honestly thought vol 1 was like the summer offensive 2000ad - all bombast, no charm. The idea would work as a wagner short because essentially the number of loonies prepared to engage in the activity (deathrace2000 postcodes) is limited - nobody in the world seems that poor they have to guarantee their death in a profession where people die every page. Vol 1 art wasn't for me either but vol 2 is catnip.

None needed! I know it seems like I letter about half the comics that come out every month, but I reckon it's barely a quarter. ;)

I find it baffling how shipping is worked out sometimes. When I've ordered a ton of massive HCs from In Stock Trades, that's usually cost me $50 for full-fat insured FedEx. But then you see Kickstarters with a similar cost for a couple of floppies, or the baffling Atomic Robo Kickstarter where $170 of books (9 skinny HCs) had a shipping price of $205! Which is insane. (Plus, it turns out that the books quite often arrived with mashed corners and scrapes anyway.)

EDIT: Looking at their current online store, they'd still charge $107 for shipping nine books (so... $333 in total!). And they estimate duty and tax to be $102.26, which is a bit of a concern, given that books are zero-rated in the UK. Sigh. I'd love Atomic Robo in HC...

Dumb question. Are vol1 and 2 available to buy?

I ask because I was of the understanding these were foot high books, but when I Google it I seem to get results for a comic costing a fiver.

Can anyone please tell me where I can buy these from (not the Kickstarter).

If you want a digital copy you can get Vol 1 from Comixology: https://www.comixology.com/Space-Bastards-1/digital-comic/914203?ref=c2VyaWVzL3ZpZXcvZGVza3RvcC9ncmlkTGlzdC9SZWNlbnRBZGRpdGlvbnM (https://www.comixology.com/Space-Bastards-1/digital-comic/914203?ref=c2VyaWVzL3ZpZXcvZGVza3RvcC9ncmlkTGlzdC9SZWNlbnRBZGRpdGlvbnM)

Thanks. When I follow the link what it offers me for vol1 is 52 pages. I was under the impression this was a lot more than that - the Kickstarter page talks about a foot high volume. So I am still confused 😢

Depends what way up you hold it.

I think you can get the individual issues at the moment but not the collected volumes, which is what this KS is for.

The Summer Offensive comparison is an interesting one as I didn't pick this up initially because it reminded me of that sort of charmless, violent comic. The artists for vol.2 are much more my taste so interest rekindled, but I think I'll wait.

When they (Clint, Bisley and the writer) did the convention circuit in 2019 it was a oversized Hardback in the 100 plus pages area. Vol 1 had Darick Robertson & Bisley on art duties and read basically as Vol 1.0 (Robertson) and 1.5 (bisley). They announced vol 2 was all paid for and ready to print in 2020 - art by MacNeil and Langley.

It clearly was a very well funded vanity project by the writer (and his friend) being sold on the basis of 'I love 2000ad too' but worth a punt given who was involved. I bought vol 1 largely because they were selling it and I assumed some of the story might be needed for vol 2 (100 plus pages of MacNeil and Langley - yes please). I don't think I finished it but would have picked up vol 2 for the art.

Recently I saw the Robertson stuff announced as a floppy from Humanoids starting 2021. It's publishing plans (7-part run, a one-shot, 2 annuals) seems... complicated? Anyway issue 1 of this appears to be the 52 page offering.

Vol 2 handed in today and its huge & looks gorgeous - 2 A5 prints also inside which I'm sure I didn't ask for.
Yes it was pricey due to shipping (which was efficient and the book was undamaged 👍🏻) but I enjoyed Vol 1's story what it is and the art is pretty good from the tooth droids as expected.
Hopefully this one hits the same standard as there looks as if there's a Vol 3 in the future.
Once read I'll post my review.

Vol 2 complete and yes it's lacking in an in-depth storyline but it's fairly fast paced and for me it's still engaging enough to merit buying the 3rd Vol (Boo Cook & Simon Bisley are on Art duties) as I want to see where it's leading.

The art and book are "quality man" - Calhabers can substitute a west coast accent. It is a bit pricey when you have to get it from the US but I have to say it was well packed so if the next release is timed right it'll probably be a birthday or Xmas purchase.

Well I got the email today and volumes 3 & 4 are available with contributions from Cook, Bisley , Farby & Langley.

These are pricey when getting them from the US and as I posted above these will be an early Present from Santa and my birthday 😁. It will be a gamble as the 2nd volume (story) wasn't as engaging as Volume 1. But I cannot fault the art inside.

🤞🏻It keeps up the quality but with those Droids above can I go wrong?

$81 for postage!!! I ordered 1 & 2 back in Jan and the postage was only $45. That's quite a jump.

Yep I thought it was a bit steep and took it was because it was for 2 volumes heavy volumes but if you got 2 for $45 in January then did they miscalculate & you got a bargain?

I've kept up with Space Bastards with the comic releases, and unfortunately it really dropped a bollock story-wise, turning into a comic I read because I thought I should rather than because I enjoyed it.

Volume one is excellent, I'll not be getting any more.

Thinking about it I ordered through Indiegogo as the shipping was cheaper. Think it was about $63 on the Space Bastards site. A couple of days later they closed it on Indiegogo!
