General / POST 1000 FTW
18 July, 2012, 02:04:09 PM
1000 posts since joining in May 2003, though I'd been lurking on and off since the forum began, and was posting to the newsgroup long before.

I was looking though old posts and came across this from 2003, Kurt Russel for Dredd???.........

The uniform definately needs redesigning. If the comic look was put in a real world setting it'd clearly be ludicrous. While the armies of history -- especially the upper ranks -- have worn much needless decor such ceremonial trim was shed in battle. So it should be for the Judges.

I'd suggest going back to the very first Dredd stories where the pads were more discreet, and extrapolating a real-world uniform from there; one could probably find a good mid-point between the comic book and contemporary uniforms of SWAT/ Riot Police. The helmet, however, should be scary badass!

:P

(I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find a post contradicting myself some time later.)

Brace yourselves! It's going to be a dense few days for 2000ad and Judge Dredd news, beginning with...

DREDD is screened tonight at 10pm pacific (they're 8 hours behind), so a flood of reactions should greet us tomorrow morning.

On Friday
Judge Dredd 35th Anniversary— It's an exciting year for Judge Dredd-not only does he turn 35 but he has a big-budget film coming, a brand-new IDW series launching, and more. IDW's Chris Ryall, Dredd film concept artist Jock, 2000 AD's Matt Smith and Ben Smith, and some very special guests join moderator Douglas Wolk to announce the creative team of IDW's series, talk about the return of the Dark Judges, and much more.

IDW's Judge Dredd comic begins in November. The panel will also have Karl Urban and "maybe" Olivia Thirlby. (Lena Headey cancelled her Game of Thrones appearance for the same afternoon either to make it to this panel or cos she can't get there at all.

Comic News Insider interview with Molcher from last night.

Website and Forum / Megazine contents page
25 June, 2012, 11:01:57 AM
On the Megazine page it says "Mega-City One, 2130 AD..." The story doesn't appear to be set in that time, so shouldn't it be 2134 AD which is how it appears in the contents of the actual comic. (I'd prefer AD 2134, but what can you do?)

And, yes, I hate myself for pointing this out.

Madrigal was conceived as a much older character, in her 70s or older, but Headey won over Alex Garland, the screenwriter and a key engine of project, to the idea of a middle-aged woman who has logged a lot of city miles.

IMGlobal just revamped their website, and there's a new pic of Urban as Dredd.

From Variety, by DAVE MCNARY
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118026068.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Amber Entertainment is teaming with British comicbook house 2000 AD and its Rebellion Publishing arm to bring medieval zombie tale "Stronghold" to life as a feature film.

Amber Entertainment's Ileen Maisel will produce. Rebellion's Jason Kingsley will make his directorial debut, and Rebellion's Chris Kingsley exec produces.

Tom Fickling is adapting the novel for the screen. The original "Stronghold" was penned by Paul Finch for the publisher's Abaddon imprint.

"Stronghold" centers on Welsh rebels utilizing druidic magic to summon an undead army to aid them in their quest to overthrow English tyranny. Hero of the story is a young knight who defies his masters to rescue the daughter of his enemy while battling legions of revenge-driven dead.

"Stronghold" is being eyed as the starting point of a partnership between Amber and 2000 AD -- best known for its "Judge Dredd" stories, which served as the basis for the 1995 feature starring Sylvester Stallone and an upcoming DNA Films pic starring Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby.

Jason Kingsley, who's been directing videogames for two decades, told Daily Variety that the inclusion of zombies in a medieval setting will give the feature a fresh look and feel. He's hoping to go into production next year.

"We think that the zombies are great fun. I've known Ileen for many years, and we think this project is a great way to get into business with Amber," he said.

The Kingsley siblings purchased 2000 AD in the year 2000. Founded in 1977, it's published a weekly anthology of five stories and has employed a number of notable artists and writers such as Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Bryan Talbot, Brian Bolland and Mike McMahon.

Amber was created last year by New Line veterans Maisel, Mark Ordesky and Jane Fleming, along with documentary and TV producer Lawrence Elman. It's currently in production on "Tiger Eyes," based on the Judy Blume novel, and "The Possession," directed by Eduardo Sanchez and co-produced by "Blair Witch Project" creators Haxan Films.

News / Krill Tro Thargo for Norwich Newsie?
10 July, 2010, 09:05:05 PM
A heart-warming tale of services to thrill-power....

A family-run city newsagent went beyond the call of duty when a customer's copy of his favourite weekly maga-zine failed to arrive on time.
Widge Savage has been getting his copy of UK-based sci-fi magazine 2000ad from Brunswick General Stores every week for three years.
But when a batch of newspapers and magazines containing his weekly copy was stolen from outside the suppliers, the newsagent sprung into action.

And you can read the rest of the story here.

Website and Forum / 200 bots a day now, and rising
01 July, 2010, 01:51:51 PM
11,300 new forum members since 11th April. Today has seen 120 new members already.
Obviously most are bots as sign-ups prior to then were around two or three a day.

Is this a cause for concern? I imagine a spamming attack, could make the forum unusable.

Film & TV / Name That Film!
01 June, 2010, 10:09:01 PM
I've been trying to find out the title of a film that was on late night TV at least a couple of times in the 90s, but can find nothing. What I can remember:

It's a black and white 1950s(ish) British thriller. It's set in a small town or village. A woman with a young son meets a handsome American who the boy calls "Cowboy Man". Tne boy dresses like a cowboy. There have been assaults (murdrers?) on local women by a nutter, and the climax takes place in a theatre and involves a pantomime dame.

Does anyone remember this?

Ummm... do we know about this?

Pat Mills The Creator of 2000AD

DVD Release Date: July 31, 2009
Run Time: 60 minutes

Product Description
In the 1970's a new genre of comic super hero was born - Judge Dredd. He immediately captured the imagination of millions. Hard-hitting and satirical, futuristic and violent, the infamous hero has even been turned into a major motion picture starring Sylvester Stallone.

The man behind the amazing success was Pat Mills, the English writer behind 'Action' and 'Battle Picture Weekly.' Together with John Wagner, the character of Judge Dredd was developed and improved as time went by and is still very much alive and successful to this day.

We go deep with Pat Mills in this film and listen to his story and his background. Where did the Judge come from? Pat Mills spills the beans.

General / Reasons to be Hateful, part 1003
20 May, 2010, 07:53:26 PM
Rob Schneider lies, and talks crap.

Last time Rob was in the UK, he was starring alongside Sylvester Stallone in the somewhat-to-not-at-all acclaimed comic book flick Judge Dredd.
"There was no way to make people happy with that film," he says. "The die-hard Judge Dredd fans saw it and were, like, 'He never took off the helmet (in the strip). You can't do that!'
"But in the comic he wore tights and looked like a ballerina. I don't think Sly would've looked so good dressed like that - he wasn't called Judge Drag."

Just saw Jock tweet this.

Bolland drawing Dredd, next to Gibbon's Comedian. Shows him penciling, and then inking with a marker. Twenty minutes long. Bit of a treat!

Creative Common / Printing and Photocopies
18 September, 2009, 09:38:18 AM
I want to print out digital artwork on A4... which is fine.

Then I'd like to join two A4 prints to make an A3, bung them in a photocopier, printing on both sides of A4, and then fold them to make an A5 sized booklet.

Folding, cropping and stapling are things I can do myself, so I'm not looking for any kind of expensive service, simply the ability to print on both sides at low cost.

Does any one have any experience of doing this? Can I go to a place like Prontaprint and do it on a photocopier? Or should I just use a home printer for everything (which is what I'd planned on doing but wonder about the cost of ink)?

Also does anyone have any thoughts on printing out digital artwork for a portfolio? Any do's and don'ts?

Lookie at the bottom of this page: //http://www.justex.net/Courts/Drug/Adult/Judges.aspx

And here: //http://www.justex.net/Courts/Criminal/CriminalCourt.aspx?crt=29

That's the exact same hairstyle Anderson has when we first see her in the Judge Death story.

Well it made me smile! :)
