Round 5 was always going to be a quickie and in two weeks we are done. I'm thinking maybe next round we'll go to one a day to give us more time to luxuriate (or for me to prep whatever's next if I'm honest, not had to think about that for some time!) Anyway not much else to say except a week of more bastard hard choices!
If the other tie today feels to me as tough as this Round has got this one is arguably the biggest mis-match. Can the energetic charm of Survival Geeks really match up to the singular epic that is Dante? Well we'll find out here.

No question it's Dante. Not to say I didn't enjoy Survival Geeks - I did it's great and I had been holding out for a volume in the UC (doesn't look like that'll happen now alas). But Dante is in a different league.

Survival Geeks was a lot of fun and improved a lot as the run went on, but Nikolai Dante is a 2000 AD classic. No contest.
The very opening run of Dante was a real treat in the Prog. Simon Fraser's art felt unlike anything else, so bright and colourful, and the story was just wild and weird. There was the promise of some ENORMOUS, sprawling epic going on. Of course we'd never get that epic, because new thrills in the 90s just came and went after like 2 or 3 outings at best. But Dante kept on coming back, and being good, and earning the right to take long breaks, to change tones a couple of times.
Survival Geeks dared to be funny, and then keep on being funny, with room for a bit of poignant character stuff, and loads of great Geekster eggs in the artwork. But it's not comparable to the moster that is

It took a very long time for me to come round; some time into Tsar Wars I think. Before that I thought the dialogue was stilted, the main character was seriously dislikeable, and the setting wasn't interesting.
I ended up not just loving the story, but actually liking Dante himself as he matured into a far more interesting character. I miss the sly old fecker.
