QuoteJust re-visiting this thread to update now that Designer is out for iPad Pro (don't think it'll run on any lesser-specced kit, plus I can't really see the point without the Pencil).

AWESOME! Thanks for the update Jim, and the review! I'm really excited to give Designer a go on my IPad. Support for Open Type is a real plus.

I've been working exclusively with my iPad Pro for about 6 months now. It's replaced my laptop for pretty much everything, and it's great to know there's a full vector app that can produce print ready artwork.

Is it available digitally as a download at all? As in legally, I'd happily pay for it.

I'm really enjoying reading these critiques. They're insightful and accessible. I look forward to more!

Thanks Tjm86. Regards the ramp, it's a mixture of perspective and I'd say lazyness on my part. I did rough a few heads there to show the medics in Steven's story, however I thought the composition was problematic. It looked like Tor Cyan was throwing the droid at them... I guess this is where my inexperience with storytelling comes in. I'm not confident making that kind of judgement, so I went the easy way of "let's just draw less". The Legendary Shark has sent me some scripts to practice on, I've got a lot to learn :)

Good shout on the disembodied leg. I think that's a perspective problem. The leg should be twisted a bit more to the right. I'll keep that in mind next time.

Not sure how I feel about Jon Bogdanove after doing a Google search... He got published for 8 years producing work like that?!

Thanks Bolt!

I'm happy with public feedback, as it encourages me to commit to improving. Also I figure if I want my artwork to be published then I need to be ready for public scrutiny.

Also if it's public hopefully someone else will see it and learn from my mistakes  ;) critiques of other people's work have been a useful resource so it's good to give something back.

I'm not really that precious, and won't get offended. If I draw something crappy I can always just draw some more.

Oh wow, thanks guys!

I really didn't see that hose... I'll admit I was lazy with that background and focussed most of my efforts on the figure, but now it's been pointed out I can see how it's problematic. That's an invaluable lesson for me to pay more attention to composition and leading lines. Funnily enough it's something I'm looking for in my photography work all the time.
It shouldn't be too much effort for me to rework this... it's just finding the time. I've finished my Art Stars entry however so hopefully soon.

Thanks for the offer of scripts Shark, that's really kind! Genuinely unexpected and I'm kinda speechless 🙂 I'd love to have a look. Would you be willing to have a look at my art and let me know what you think? Or for me to post the art on this forum (or send to PJ for a Friday Fix Up)?
I'm really focussed on learning and building confidence right now, and feedback is the most helpful way for me to progress. I actually enjoy getting feedback anyway... as it forces me to look at what I do differently and think critically. Other than submitting one off drawings or paintings to competitions I'm not really interested in formally submitting anything, and if I did use your scripts for portfolio work I'd let you know and make sure you're credited.

I can't promise I'll work on anything soon, maybe in the next two months at the latest, but feel free to email brendan [dot] meachen [at] gmail.com

Bolt, likewise, I'd love to get some scripts once I've had a go at Sharky's. Recognising you're probably busy already would you be willing to provide me with feedback if I drew some art for them? Or just post them on this forum for review?
If it's work that's already published I want to ensure it's treated properly, so just let me know what's ok and what isn't.

Thanks so much for the support!

Thanks Steven, that's great feedback! I think you're right, the centre line for the figure isn't quite right. I cleaned this up a bit after posting it but that was one thing I didn't see. I know the arms are too long as well, but the exaggeration kinda works with the pose.

I'm glad it's clear whats happening though :) that's very encouraging.

Here's that other Tor Cyan image I promised.

See what I mean by my awful figure drawing? ;)

Any constructive criticism on my figure drawing would be much appreciated. Cheers :)

Beautiful work Jase! I love the quality of your line, particularly the inking on the visor.

Twist my arm... 🙂

I'll give it a go when I get some time for it, probably in a month or so when I slow down a bit with travelling. The problem I get is I notice any errors with anatomy or my drawing in general, even if no one else does, and it bothers me. I'm my own worst critic.

I've had some good feedback and advice on this forum. I highly recommend posting your work here. It's be great to see it :)

Try to find communities of artists on Facebook and other social networks or forums too. Reddit has a few threads dedicated to art. I got some very harsh criticism on Facebook once, but it enabled me to make rapid progression in the right direction.

I'm looking to get published in the small press before approaching 2000ad or any other real publishers. I reckon it's a good way to hone my craft, assuming the small press editors accept my work. I think there's more chance of getting feedback and responses from the small press than there is from 2000ad.

Hope that's useful and good luck!

QuoteYup. They'll be terrible, but nobody else ever has to see them, and you'll be slowly learning important skills...

That's pretty much the attitude I took with learning to draw heads, and currently with my figure drawing work. Besides, no one wants to see several pages of newsprint covered with hundreds of drawings of torsos and ribcages...

I'll give sequential art a go, but right now my primary focus is nailing the human figure, which is hard work but I know I'm making progress. I've always found my lack of confidence drawing people well to be a barrier to drawing narratives.
#13
Thanks, that's very encouraging.

I'm.not yet confident enough with my figure work to commit to sequential art yet. I'm fine with gesture and proportions, but my knowledge of the muscles and how they work structurally is too weak. I'm working hard on learning and improving though so hopefully sooner than later I'll be posting work that's more ambitious.

That said my second illustration was going to have a fuller figure, as will my art stars entry. I just can't promise they'll be as good.

Thanks Steve 🙂 yup heads are pretty much what I'm good at right now. I'm learning the rest of the human body but it'll take some time.

I may just flip this to deal with the issue of the eye... woops! That's a colossal mistake on my part.
Bottom left is supposed to a hand wrestling with a joy stick. I can draw hands relatively well too, it's  the perspective isn't really helping here. There's supposed to be another screen there to help frame the composition, but looking at it now it's not needed. I was thinking colour would make it clearer, but I probably shouldn't rely on colour when it should be clear in black and white.

Really appreciate the quick response and the feedback, I'll see if I can do another iteration.

Finally got round to inking this. I'll add some colour soon. Not sure if the zine will be printed in colour... but I'll colour it anyway.

Thoughts and feedback most welcome 🙂 I'm working on a second illustration showing Tor Cyan throwing the broken droids from the ship. Might be a while until that's ready though...
