It's votin' time squaxx! We've had another superb turnout for the comp and once again all of your efforts are hugely appreciated. The brief was to Twothalise your favourite juve literature and the results are a sight to behold.

As is standard procedure, vote for your top 3. You can also make an honorable mention if the fancy takes you.

Voting will run until 8pm on Tuesday 31st of May.

Entries will start with Albion and finish with Zarjazzer, so no voting till you see that one please.

Happy voting!

General / 2000AD Apr/May Art Comp. PRE-PROG PRIMER.
06 April, 2011, 11:59:52 PM
Greetings Squaxx. Welcome to the latest incarnation of the Galaxy's Greatest Internet Forum Based Art Competition. It's time to buckle on those brain boosters and initialise your creative subroutines. Crack open a new pack of Crayola and get an adult to tie up the back of your art apron. We're going back, way back, to childhood and the realms of the imagination.

The last comp saw the debut of a fresh faced neophyte of the forum, Mr. David Frankum, who swept all before him in what was a seriously high quality field. As behooves his status of reigning champeen, he gets to choose the subject this time round. We all remember the books of our childhoods, and it's a good thing too. Because David has gone with this...

QuoteA Children's book adaptation of 2000 ad.
Choose a well known children's book and adapt it to a 2000ad story or character. You could draw the artwork in the style of a certain children's book or pick a scene in a children's book and change it to suit the 2000 ad universe. Anything goes... the sky's the limit.

I think that is fairly clear. So, you want "The Very Hungry Klegg", you go for it! "Noddy and Big Ears: SD Agents", that is also fine. Cast your minds back or rifle through your kids bookshelves, there's a huge range of inspiration in children's fiction.

The comp will run till 8pm Monday the 23rd of May.

Don't eat the crayons.

Film & TV / Moebius: Trans Forme
05 April, 2011, 07:36:40 PM
Moebius: Trans Forme, a half hour documentary about Moebius' Exhibition in Paris has just been on Sky Arts 1. Magical, with some wonderful insights from the maestro himself. It will be repeated at 2.50pm tomorrow (6th April). I you have a Sky+ box, I would thoroughly recommend recording it.

http://video.sky.com/skyarts/related/remap/video-moebius-transe-forme/

Sky Arts 1 are doing a whole series of graphic arts programs at 6pm this week. Friday's is about Reynold Brown the movie poster artist.

Missed yesterday's. DRAT!

DAVID FRANKUM

HURRAH!.

Take a bow David and enjoy your well deserved victory!

Then, have a good old ponder on what you would like to set as the next Comp's subject. PM me if you have any questions as to what we've already had subject wise.

Thanks again folks, this was a real doozy of a comp and we'll get the next one rolling soon as.

Cheers, Kerrin.

Film & TV / Bored to Death.
31 March, 2011, 09:02:31 PM
Anyone else see the first episode of this on Sky Atlantic? Thoroughly enjoyable comedy with cool performances from Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson. Galifianakis plays a neuroses riddled comic artist. Which is pretty accurate I reckon.  :D

...which I hadn't watched before, the rest of the series looks fun too. Episode 1 is still on Sky Atlantic and 2 is on Monday at 10.20pm.

Put on you best bib and tucker and feast your eyes on the thrillpower packed entries for the Feb/Mar Art Comp.

The subject this time out was "I Heart 2000AD". Basically, whatever it is about the Galaxy's Greatest that you love the most. It was a very broad brief and it was interesting to see what people came up with. Some people have taken it more literally than others (ahem), and some have chosen a very specific character or facet of the Prog that really floats their boat.

Anyhoo, choose your top 3 and put them in order. You can also include an honorable mention.

Voting will run till 8PM Sunday the 3rd of April.

The first one up will be Colin YNWA and the last Zarjazzer 2, so no voting till you see that one please.

Happy voting!

Books & Comics / New Dark Tower Novel. 2012.
12 March, 2011, 06:37:21 PM
To be called "Wind Through the Keyhole", Stephen King will be adding to his saga in 2012. Not my personal favourite from King but I know there are some big fans of this here. More info about where this fits into the series from the author himself on his site...

General / 2000AD Feb/Mar Art Comp. I Heart 2000AD.
10 February, 2011, 10:03:41 PM
Welcome back art lovers. It's time to start the ball rolling on the latest installment of the forum's art extravaganza. Our last comp was won by the enigma that is IAMTHESYSTEM, (real name Ptolomy), and he has decided that for your next challenge you should wear your heart on your sleeve and give a little love. Love for 2000AD that is!

We're all by definition fans of the Mighty One's magnificent organ, but what is it that really get's the old juices flowing and makes you go mmmmm? IAMTHESYSTEM's idea was this...

QuoteDraw an aspect of 2000AD that really appeals to you. Is it the souless yet fantastical Mega City 1 or it's grim faced yet resiliant inhabitants? Does Slaines' world of Celtic beauty and it's hardy Warriors make you go 'Kiss my Axe!'? Or is it Sam Slade/Zombo or something else that makes your thrill factor overload?

It's a pretty wide remit and means you can indulge yourself in depicting whatever aspect of the Galaxy's Greatest particularly pings your thrill circuits. A favourite character you always return to. A scene or location that has lodged in the mind's eye. Format wise there's...

Quotescope for everyone to do their fave character/situation any way they like. A painting, a poster or even a comic book page you could do pretty much what you fancy

So there it is. Spoil yourself. Be as self indulgent as you like and create something wonderful to celebrate what you love best about 2000AD, The Galaxy's Greatest Comic!

The comp will run for about six weeks and the deadline for entries is Midnight Sunday the 27th of March.

Have fun!

Woo, that ended up being close. A battle royale erupted at the top of the table with the first, second and third places being separated by a Klapaxian handful of points (that's eight for those of you who've forgotten your Klapaxian physiology, tut).

Thanks as usual to everyone who took the time to create an entry. There are a lot of other projects on the boil at the moment and what with Christmas and the festive season bumbling into the creative headlights your magnificent masterpieces really are appreciated.

Thanks also to those who took the time to posit an opinion via the voting.

So, here we go...

In 3rd, with a beautifully painted homage to the Dark Knight is...

STEVEN DENTON

Truly superb paint work Steven.

In 2nd, a fantastically rendered superhero take on our favourite flintfaced lawman from the Calhab comic genius that is...

DOG DEEVER

Bloody brilliant Bruce!

Pausing momentarily to Honorably Mention KOWALSKY for his awesome holographic prog we move on to...

1st place and a gentleman who has contributed some wonderful work to the art comps in the past. This time though, he has outdone himself. Your winner, with a blood and guts and veins in yer teeth WWII reworking of Rogue Trooper is...

IAMTHESYSTEM

CONGRATULATIONS MR.SYSTEM!

Take a moment to bask in the eldritch glow of your fellow boarders admiration and then, if you would be so kind, apply your cognitive beret to your fascinatingly misshapen cranium and ponder upon the subject of the next competition. PM me with any ideas and we'll get the next comp rolling toot sweet.

Thanks again to all art fiends, animal, vegetable or sentiently mineral and we will reconvene anon.

Cheers,

Kerrin.

Test your judging prowess by picking a winner out of this lot then squaxx. The challenge was to reboot 2000AD, the Meg or your favourite character/story. As is usual at this time of year, what with the general post crimbo/new year malais, that we have a smaller field than the rest of the year but I believe you will find the quality of the highest order, ('cept mine, which I'll freely admit is shocking).

Vote for your top three and stick an honorable mention in there if you like.

Voting will run for one week till 8pm Monday the 7th of Feb. The entries for your consideration will begin with Dog Deever and end with The Monarch so no voting till you've seen that.

Enjoy.

General / RESULTS THREAD. Stick It To The Man.
10 January, 2011, 09:54:56 PM
Well I'd say you've stuck it to him good! For a comp that was done as a bit of a laugh over the festive period the response was fantastic. Thanks again from your fellow boarders for making it such a blast and lets get to the results.

In 3rd we have one of 8 entries (yes, 8!) from the cracked genius behind ECBT2000AD...

BLUEMEANIE 3

Well done Rich! You got loads of votes mate, spread over several of your entries (fnaar).

In 2nd, this one made me laugh like a twat, we have confirmation of one of 2000AD's worst kept secrets. Courtesy of...

JOHNNYSTRESS 1

Titter.

Pausing briefly, as is traditional in these circumstances, to honorably mention....EVERYBODY, we reach the pinnacle of our 3-panel stick man sequential art based fun.

In 1st. Narrowly beating Mr.McMonagle's fabulous strip by the skin of it's two dimensional teeth and showing us how it's really done is a tittilating titan of the board. Laugh? Oh sorry, that's...

LARF 3

CONGRATULATIONS LARF

Championi, championi...Bask in the adoration of the board sir! You are also the winner of a character study commission of your choice from Matt Soffe you lucky lucky devil. I'll give you a PM to sort out details.

Congratulations again to everyone who took part, and voted, and generally made this a laugh. I'm sure this won't be the last stick man comp we see but someone else can sort it out next time, I'm a broken shell of a man after posting that voting thread. :D

And if I've got those positions wrong, Pete Wells can kick me in the balls.

General / VOTING THREAD. Stick It To The Man.
02 January, 2011, 09:29:41 PM
OK, let's do it!

Congratulations to everybody who took part, an outstanding effort.

Vote for your top three. If an entrant has more than one contribution they will be numbered, please use that number in conjunction with the entrant's name. None of this "Billy's one with the dog, lol" rubbish, NAME AND NUMBER.

Votes will be calculated at three points for first, two for second and one for third.

Voting will run till some point in the evening of MONDAY the 10th of JANUARY.

The entries to vote on will start with Aaron A Aardvark's first and end with Worldshown's second. No voting till that has been posted please. It will take me a while because there are 73 of them!

Help! / Image hosting sites.
02 January, 2011, 04:37:00 PM
Can anyone recommend an image hosting site that isn't as bloody puritan as Photobucket? I'm trying to do the voting thread for the stick man comp and at least one of the images has already been removed for breaking their rules of use. As far as I can tell because it had the word fuck in it. Not a huge amount of help for this forum then.

Fractal Friction, before the Pimp Squad turns up.

These turned up today and to say I'm chuffed doesn't quite cover it. I asked Colin for a Shimura sketch at BICS and as he had a sizable list to work through I've just received them (them! As in more than one!) as a lovely Christmas bonus.

The first one is the colour Shimura sketch I asked for. It's so much more than I was expecting and is getting framed as soon as I can afford it after the new year. You'll have to excuse the dodgy photo and flash shine, it's A3 and looks bloody awesome in real life...

There was also a very pleasant surprise in the poster tube. A bonus drawing from Colin's archives, again Shimura, but this cracking full length figure was the piece he did for the Tom Frame montage...gulp...ever so slightly overawed...

Cheers again Colin, you're bloody legend.
