Brigand Doom is one of those strips where I wish Alan McKenzie had been more willing to be an editor first and foremost, and hand over a great premise (with a great artist) to someone else to develop. The first series of Doom is great but McKenzie obviously had no real idea of where to take it after that.

My dissatisfaction with The Citadel is more about the storytelling than the characterisation of Dredd. That itself shouldn't be a problem given that we know that this is being told by a partial (if not necessarily unreliable) narrator and that Dredd, while being a bit more harshly bastardly than usual, is reacting to incredibly trying circumstances.
What he actually reminds me of is Joe Darkie or Kano in their earliest appearances before the reader comes to understand what drives them and reveals that they are more complex if not necessarily better people than we'd initially assumed. But that's not really possible with Dredd, when a) we've been following him for 45 years, b) this is a flashback so can't reveal anything about his present character and c) the story itself is about halfway over already.
We're being teased with something terrible about Dredd but in a context that we knows end with him killing hundreds of millions of innocent people. It's very difficult to see what this untold story could reveal that would top that without seeming gimmicky or impermanent. And the pacing again is an issue. A lot has happened in the first 30 pages but not much that seems to have consequence (though I'm prepared to be wrong about that). Given that this supposed to be a condemned man's confession it's all very leisurely. I expect the second half to escalate things considerably but it's hard not to feel that we're reading a story not being told by a man who's spent 40 years in solitary confinement but by a comics writer who knows how to build up the suspense nicely in a way that makes sense as pure storytelling but feels contrived as an actual read.
On an unrelated note, I hope the little Cith with the tray who gets flicked away by one of the jailers survived Midnight's rampage in Proteus Vex.

The thing that's puzzling me about The Citadel is when it's supposed to happen. We follow Dredd fairly closely for most of 'The Apocalypse War' and even when there are gaps in what we see him up to, there isn't really much of an opportunity for him to have snuck off alone like this.

« on: 15 March, 2022, 09:15:20 PM »Been doing a read-through of the Eagle at a leisurely pace but I'm finally at the RAT TRAP era the OP mentions and I think the strip may be the single biggest reason for New Eagle's demise, as its purpose seems to be to personally insult every single remaining Eagle reader one by one while telling them that they, their home town and their ideas all suck.
Presumably this is what got Cor!! cancelled back in 1974 as well.

« on: 15 March, 2022, 09:06:52 PM »I think this has been a weaker run than usual although I can't put my figure on why.
There's a lot of movement but not much of a sense that we're getting anywhere, and there's no real sense of structure or story. Case in point, the first page of the latest serial is all about what Francis Bacon's up to as if he's going to cast a bigger shadow over the rest of the story... but then he's barely mentioned. (Compare with the first episode of Proteus Vex in the same prog, where Midnight's appearance is important contextualisation for what's to come, even if she's not involved in anything we've seen since.)
It feels like a strip that's happily treading water in that particular way that Tom Tully made his own back in the 1970s and 1980s, except that Tully's stories could run for months and it could be years before we see any more of 'The Order'.

It sounds like this is very much a one-off, as negotiating the rights to other series would be a long and thankless task. But there's some amazing stuff in 'Look-In' that ought to be back in print in a more permanent form, most obviously Arthur Ranson's 'Sapphire & Steel'.
