I really like Colin Macneil's art on this.  Is it the first time we've seen Dredd doubting the system?

One of my top three has to be Twenty Years To Midnight from Megazine 302.  Script Al Ewing, art Henry Flint.

So much happens in just twelve pages.  Ewing introduces us to a new Mega-City One subculture, brings back Chopper then dismisses him as a has-been, Mrs Gunderson and Walter provide some comic relief, Judge Beeny takes point, and there's an awesome Dredd one-liner ("sure, I'll take bad cop"). There's also some crazy violence and amazing Henry Flint art.

Excellent write up as usual Colin.

I picked up a Joblot of random issues of Best of 2000ad Monthly from Ebay in December last year partly because it contained Bad Company (issues 77 & 78 contain book 1, 101 & 102 book 2 if anyone is looking).  It's been at least 25 years since I last read it.  I remember enjoying the first two books a lot when I read them as a youngster, so am interested to see how it goes when it gets to the top of the pile.  Lots to think about after reading your review.

I read Kano in the original progs, remember liking it as well even though it was different to the original books.

Quote from: Le Fink on 22 January, 2024, 09:08:44 PMI think Angie Mills also did an episode?

She drew at least 2 episodes.  John Hicklenton also drew some episodes of Third World War.  His depiction of the corrupt police chief was disturbing.

Quote from: 2000BC on 22 January, 2024, 04:54:47 PMNemesis has had 715 pages of strip, 29 covers, and 7 star scans.  Adding up to 751 total pages.

I get 912 pages of strip, 36 covers, 36 posters and about 12 feature pages.

I'm including quite a lot of content, like the Deadlock series etc. Data source.

I was hoping you would show up with some more accurate numbers.

I used the Nemesis data from Barney and didn't include the Deadlock series etc.  I wonder if that series and the ABC Black Hole series will be included in the Definitive Edition?  I'm hoping the Black Hole is - Bisley's art at that size would be great.

I did some quick research* using Barney and the Ultimate Collection Wikipedia page to add up the total number of pages of Nemesis and Slaine that have appeared in the Prog.
Nemesis has had 715 pages of strip, 29 covers, and 7 star scans.  Adding up to 751 total pages.
Slaine has had 2159 pages of strip, 80 covers, and 8 star scans.  Adding up to 2247 total pages.
It looks like Slaine has had (almost) three times the amount of pages in the Prog so would need three times the amount of Definitive Edition books. So 15 books!

*May be incorrect.

Quote from: Max Headroom on 19 January, 2024, 07:45:56 PMI still think that overall the series deserves the 'definitive' deluxe treatment that Nemesis is undergoing at the moment.

I agree.  The Nemesis Definitive edition is an amazing book, Slaine done the same way would be great.

I bet that Slaine wouldn't think them too many.  ;)

Anyone want to guess how many?!

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 20 January, 2024, 02:10:56 AMI thought The Horned God's ending was the perfect send-off for Slaine but I suppose it would have been a bit much to expect 2000ad to get rid of what was probably then its most commercially successful character.

I agree.  The end of Book of Invasions would also have been a perfect ending for the series.  Slaine wandering around at the start of Brutania all alone and old seemed a bit sad.  Amazing art though!

I liked all the Book of Invasions, the first book of Brutania, and the Bogatyr.  Simon Davis's art on the first book of Brutania was outstanding.  For me post Horned God Slaine is mostly about the art - the stories can be a bit repetitive in places, but the art is always good.

1. Risk Assessment.
2. Fitting The Description.
3. One-Eyed Jacks.

Mike Carroll one-offs take the top two places for me, with Colin Macneil art placing Risk Assessment in the top spot.

I thought the overall quality of the art was really high this year.
