When I was in Barcelona for 4 days recently I didn't miss it a bit. Half an hour after I was home I'd caught up on my boards and e-mail. You do wonder what you do sat staring at a screen for 5 hours a day - apart from porno and Youtube links of course.

I won't sign up for any organised turn off but if the internet failed tomorrow I'm confident I'd survive.

You know when I was a boy there were 3 TV channels, no internet or mobile phones and porno was something you found in bushes.

Because of my sheer laziness on a Saturday, I don't know if I can go without my computer for a whole day. I'm fine if I'm away from the house, but on Saturdays I usually kill at least some time on the computer playing games or whatever while I figure out what to do. A foolish dependance I know, but there it is.

Ach, double-posting.  Horrid work circumstance have forced me to bring my laptop with me on my last two holidays, with the result that I spent good chunks of them reviewing spreadsheets and hunting for WiFI.  I have unpleasant memories of the good woman passing me in the hotel lobby taking our son swimming while I typed furiously away.  I would be very glad indeed to be unshackled from its cruel tyranny for a day, but then I imagine my mobile would ring incessantly instead.

I say I can't do it - job application, profile of one of my students for my 'professional development portfolio' and 2 classes to write before Tuesday, mid-May, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

But the good lady says 'no computers for you Saturday - you can do it'. So we'll see who wins that one. It might be fun to have the day off. I may just spend it reading for those 2 classes.
