I am seriously considering trying to make a Rogue Trooper theamed one shot fanzine. The FQP guys did one a few years ago, not that I want to tread on their toes, but it's probably about time for another one.
I'd buy one!
Me to!
me three!
I take it by the thread title that it will include useful tips such as how to clean out your chem filter and decent make up tips. ::)
Yeah if a mod could fix the title that would be great. Also I'm dyslexic and a bit touchy about my spelling. I CANNOT SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROUGE AND ROGUE due to a specific learning disability and although I'm fine with people correcting my spelling i prefer 'sorry man, but you wrote Rouge instead of Rogue again to another fucking joke about makeup.
Sorry, didn't mean to offend. Thought it was a rerun of a Droid Tales joke . Can fully appreciate sensitivity regarding spelling with that SLD so I will pay attention to your request in future. :-[

It's OK, it's one of the few things I'm over sensitive about. I can see why you would have thought of the droid life strip. Unsurprisingly that one confused me for ages.
No problem. One of the biggest problems with on line forums, random people respond in ways you really don't expect and without a clue of things that might be triggered. Mind you, I think the majority of the forum are messed up one way or another. Makes for interesting times.
If you say something irritates you on line and everyone doesn't imidiatly do that thing 100 times you know you're in one of the better places on the internet
Aye, we've said it before. This place is weird!
Of course now I don't know if people want a Rouge or Rogue special
I'd be interested in a Rogue Fanzine -(specially if it contained a "tips" section on making some GI gear)
I do think we need to be a little careful here mind. Amazon is pretty good at helping here with their 'commonly bought together' algorithm by all accounts but considering the nature of nu-Earth warfare, this might be a little contentious. :o
Steve - if you print it, they will come.

:o :o :o :o Wow!
This sounds relevant to my interests.... ;)
Fabulous idea! Sun Legion and Scum Marines Second Reg!
That page of Steve's is actually from the new Rogue Trooper strip he's created for Zarjaz- on sale in the next couple of weeks... 'Blue Christmas'
And the rest of it is even better...
Hmmm - I dunno Bolt & Steven I reckon your Rogue Trooper comic has already been made. Found this in a charity shop today...

That's Fantastic!
A great looking Cover. Any story ideas or Pinup art yet and would it be available for print or Digital only run?
It would be a print comic.
I've had an idea for a longer RT story then would comfortably fit in Zarjaz for a while. Other then that I'm still trying to work out what kind of comic and format to use.
Probably bigger then a5.
Pinups & strips for sure, probably black and white but maybe a mix of colour and black and white.
Maybe interviews if I can get any.
I'm open to other contributors.
I reckon it will take 2 years to get something together.
Pop me down for something Ste. :D :D
I'm in if you'll have me!
I would be very pleased to have you both onboard.
whats kind of thing would you be interested in doing? I'm going to start a list of things I would like to include but feel free to add to it. Brainstorm! As Helm would probably shout.
I'm starting to compile a list of possible content:
Rogue Trooper
Venus Blue Genes
Tales of Nu Earth
Bland and Brass
The Traitor General
Friday
Tor Cyan
The 86ers
Jaegir
Comic strips (obviously)
Interviews
Articles
Reviews
(Retro) Games
Pin Up's (much as I like pinups I don't really want to many. I can however see things like a where's Wally or cut out and keep paper craft working quite well)
How about a Major Magnam or Colonel Kovert story?

I know after one too many KBs he's thinking of hanging up his pencils, but this might tempt him back...
Need any script writers? I've dabbled in the past and would love to dabble some more :-)
I would happily do a pin up / star scan type pic...not sure if I could commit to a full strip.
Sharky, yes I/we will need scripts. Comic strips (Depending on artists) text stories with illustrations.
Amines: strip work is a big commitment, although I would prefer comics I will need spot illustrations and pin ups. All RT fans are welcom to contribute!
POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTORS!
What kind of thing would you be interested in doing?
Reply here, PM me or come chat on Facebook.
I am happy to do an illustration or pin-up if you are happy to have me! (will give the strip work a miss due to workload issues from my side). Random examples of work available if required?
I would be very happy to have you on board for a illustration or pinup Alex. At the moment I'm thinking an Illustration as I would like text stories and articles to be illustrated with full or half page pictures.
As already mentioned, I'll do production and any design stuff as you might require (I happen to have a vector re-draw I did of the RT logo on file from ages back, handily...) and as much lettering as you need. I'd really like to draw something, too. Rogue is one of those characters who's so imprinted on my brain that, like Dredd, he kind of falls out of my pen when I can't think of anything else to draw...
I'll drop you a line!
Your help (and logo) will be greatly appreciated Jim. It's a perfect opportunity for you to dust off your pens!
If you think I may be suitable, I could contribute an illustration or two myself - like Alex, I have other commitments (mainly college work) which prevent me from taking on anything more at the moment.
I can contribute script or prose. What kind of length are you looking for (Matron!)?
At the moment it looks like I'm going to have more use for prose (or articles) I think between two and 3 thousand words.
I Would like to make a comic full of strips but realistically artists able to commit to sequential pages are going to be hard to find
Ok, I'll get my thinking helmet on. What's the deadline?
The deadline is 'when I have enough stuff to fill a comic' realistically 2 years but I would love to have it done sooner.
Cheers :)
I think either a US comic or Magazine format would be interesting (important to decide on the format before producing any art)
A mix of colour and black and white content. (mostly B&W)
An 8bit style top down shooter, cover disk (the disk would be fake but the game would be real and could be downloaded from a link)
pop with down for some sequential pages Ste. ;)

Thanks flip! I'm going to start a Facebook group soon for paring writers and artists and to get things going.
I've never put together a Fanzine before, and by it's very nature this is someone else's intellectual property.
Who at Rebellion should I ask if this is OK to avoid being sued?
What's the Etiquette with fanzines?
I'd suggest Molch-R in the first instance- if it needs to be a different droid, I'm sure he would be able to tell you.
Thanks Bolt!
Fanzines and Fan art are such an integral part of the fan community I had really considers how massively copyright infringing it all is!
I've started a Facebook page fb.me/RogueTrooperFanzine

Guidelines are simple for anyone interested: I would like Stories (Artists and writers wanted, but the number of writers would depend on the number of artist) Pinups/illustrations, prose stories and articles relating to Rogue, ancillary characters and his descendants.
I'm particularly interested in sorties that either add depth or explore unexplored ideas. The tone should be broadly consistent with 2000ad, current or past.
I'm more that happy to do something Steve.
I was thinking about this the other day and I reckon a Major Magnam or Colonel Kovert story would suet you down to the ground!
I've got a couple of ideas for a Major Magnam outing if that's any use?

Sound good to me!!
I'm surprised that more people haven't pitched story ideas. Where are all the Rogue Trooper writers at?
I'll write something. Give me five minutes... :-)
I have an idea... where do we send them to?
You can message me on Facebook, or here. If you don't have my email address, pm me and I'll send it to you.
I'm particularly interested in stories that expand on either minour characters or the world, especially ideas that are touched upon, but not explained in the strips.
My story might fit that bill! Needs some refining I think, but the basic idea is there.... off to FB!
I drew This 4 page silent strip way back in 2002! it appeared in zarjaz in 2009 I think

The complexation date is flexible. I expect it to be done either mid of late 2019, so plenty of time.
I'm am definitely still looking for contributors drop me a message (either here or on Facebook) and let me know what kind of thing you would like to do.

I've Just finished a 'Friday' text story that's going to need 3 or 4 Illustrations. This would be a good opportunity for an artist (or two) who is interested in contributing but doesn't have time for sequentials to jump on board.

i would like to do one illo it you still need some one, it might take me a month to get around to doing it thought if that ok. post a link to story.
Warm up stuff. I did this story on a whim for the short story competition, then did a couple of illustrations on a whim too.

Tor Cyan's ambulance spun out of control, its circuits sparking and smoking; motors and coils burning from electrical overload. The orderly droids crackled as they burnt. They moved through a series of mechanical tests as their processors failed. Cyan briefly thought how much they looked like they were practising yoga positions whilst on fire. Androids have seldom looked as much like an absurd mockery of life.
A massive, radioactive electrical wave had hit the small spacecraft as it made its approach to the mining operation on the planet Magnus Hellenbeck. There had been an accident and thirteen seriously injured miners needed an evac to Mercy Heights. Hellenbeck was genealogically young; its surface was a constantly shifting jigsaw of soft rock and lava. Thousand mile an hour winds and thick pyroclastic clouds scoured its surface, creating massive electrical storms that lashed out into space. Cyan had flown right into one. It fried the android orderlies' minds and set their bodies alight; it shorted the ambulance's controls and superheated the electrics. It would have killed any human on board instantly; but Cyan was just in unimaginable pain. He thought of it as a wakeup call; space's way of saying "Don't get cocky".
The acrid smoke was getting so thick he could hardly see; something started beeping, then something else, then something else; systems were failing in a cacophony of urgent, shrill alarms. The smoke tasted like acid and smelled like a bonfire of arseholes. Cyan had always wondered why his sense of smell and taste were so acute when almost nothing could poison him. A much deeper beeping let him know that he had picked up the mining station's beacon. The beeps turned into a constant tone as he lined up the ambulance with the approach signal. He took one last unpleasant breath, then opened the airlock and switched off all power. The smoke drained into space instantly, and the fires went out. The temperature dropped to near absolute zero. He hoped the power would start again or he was going to hit the planet's surface at ten thousand miles per hour. The androids floated gracefully in the zero gravity. Cyan hit the start button a little harder than necessary and the craft kicked back into life.
Shields further up the shuttle were buffeted and burnt by the winds and the boiling ash, but Cyan arrived safely at the complex's hangar. The injured miners were there to meet him. Their confidence seemed to dip when Cyan tossed out the burnt droids. "Orderlies are broken. If you can't board under your own power, raise your hands and I'll haul your ass aboard."
The journey back to Merry Heights is far less eventful. Covered in blood and soot, Cyan delivers the injured and then heads straight for the bar. Lilla Ferro has been sitting by herself in one of the booths for an hour, nursing a drink and a headache. "Tor, you look like crap." Cyan stares at her. "It's been a tough shift," he says with a solemn expression. "I've been to Hellenbeck."

I've got some potential ideas for a Tor Cyan illustration. I did a sketch last night (which turned out to be awful :p ), but it's sparked some other ideas.
I'll see if I can come up with something in the next few days.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Work in progress...

Finally got round to inking this. I'll add some colour soon. Not sure if the zine will be printed in colour... but I'll colour it anyway.

Thoughts and feedback most welcome 🙂 I'm working on a second illustration showing Tor Cyan throwing the broken droids from the ship. Might be a while until that's ready though...
Really nice! I like your style and you can draw a good head.
Criticism wise, I'm not really sure what's going on in the bottom let and I think Tor's eyepiece and scars are on the left side of his face
Thanks Steve 🙂 yup heads are pretty much what I'm good at right now. I'm learning the rest of the human body but it'll take some time.
I may just flip this to deal with the issue of the eye... woops! That's a colossal mistake on my part.
Bottom left is supposed to a hand wrestling with a joy stick. I can draw hands relatively well too, it's the perspective isn't really helping here. There's supposed to be another screen there to help frame the composition, but looking at it now it's not needed. I was thinking colour would make it clearer, but I probably shouldn't rely on colour when it should be clear in black and white.
Really appreciate the quick response and the feedback, I'll see if I can do another iteration.
Leave the colour out, it works incredibly well as is. Sometimes B&W can do a far better job than colour does. What you've posted here is a nice piece. What will be interesting is to see how your work evolves for narrative artwork. Looking forward to seeing more after this, mind.
Thanks, that's very encouraging.
I'm.not yet confident enough with my figure work to commit to sequential art yet. I'm fine with gesture and proportions, but my knowledge of the muscles and how they work structurally is too weak. I'm working hard on learning and improving though so hopefully sooner than later I'll be posting work that's more ambitious.
That said my second illustration was going to have a fuller figure, as will my art stars entry. I just can't promise they'll be as good.

QuoteYup. They'll be terrible, but nobody else ever has to see them, and you'll be slowly learning important skills...
That's pretty much the attitude I took with learning to draw heads, and currently with my figure drawing work. Besides, no one wants to see several pages of newsprint covered with hundreds of drawings of torsos and ribcages...
I'll give sequential art a go, but right now my primary focus is nailing the human figure, which is hard work but I know I'm making progress. I've always found my lack of confidence drawing people well to be a barrier to drawing narratives.
Narratives rely on storytelling and characters being recognisable from frame to frame. you can get away with quite a bit when it comes to anatomy and perspective with sequential art.
Twist my arm... 🙂
I'll give it a go when I get some time for it, probably in a month or so when I slow down a bit with travelling. The problem I get is I notice any errors with anatomy or my drawing in general, even if no one else does, and it bothers me. I'm my own worst critic.
Here's that other Tor Cyan image I promised.
See what I mean by my awful figure drawing? ;)
Any constructive criticism on my figure drawing would be much appreciated. Cheers :)
it's good!
constructive criticism wise, I think you loose the torso and chest. looking at the pose there should be more of Tor on the right hand side of the picture.
I could tell exactly what was going on though which is the most important thing with narrative art
Thanks Steven, that's great feedback! I think you're right, the centre line for the figure isn't quite right. I cleaned this up a bit after posting it but that was one thing I didn't see. I know the arms are too long as well, but the exaggeration kinda works with the pose.
I'm glad it's clear whats happening though :) that's very encouraging.
Also- the hose dangling on his right follows roughly the line expected by the body, causing a slight disconnect.
Its a good pic, though, with a nice dynamism running through it.
Sequentials will definitely help you.
The arm's are a bit long but you can get away with it. proportions only have to be dead on if you have a dead on style, exaggeration for effect/dynamism is often better than photorealism for energy.
Bolt is right, if you put the body and upper thy in the line would run pretty much exactly along the line of the hose and smoke.
Sequentials would definitely help. my advice would be start with something short (no more than 4 pages) and just get it done. the first rule of drawing is done not finished, art is never finished but you have to get used to calling it done.
Bren, I'd be happy to send you a few of my old scripts to practice on, with the understanding that they are just for practice and not for submission except as examples of your own work for you to show to editors and such.
Bolt, I assume you don't mind me sending Bren some of my scripts you've already published in the past and none of the ones still in your system?
Shark- no worries at all. If Bren wanted I'd be happy to pass him scripts till he was confident enough with his skills.
There are a few other folk out there quietly working away on getting sequentials up to standard in exactly that manner.
There are the sample scripts https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=27411.0 (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=27411.0) That are pretty good practice. they have been done by dozens of artist.
Feedback is probably quite important. one of the advantages of working on a live script for a small press anthology is you get an editor (in the case of the Rogue fanzine me, with FQP bolt) and that artist editor relationship is invaluable.
Great stuff. I'm happy to help in any way I can.
Oh wow, thanks guys!
I really didn't see that hose... I'll admit I was lazy with that background and focussed most of my efforts on the figure, but now it's been pointed out I can see how it's problematic. That's an invaluable lesson for me to pay more attention to composition and leading lines. Funnily enough it's something I'm looking for in my photography work all the time.
It shouldn't be too much effort for me to rework this... it's just finding the time. I've finished my Art Stars entry however so hopefully soon.
Thanks for the offer of scripts Shark, that's really kind! Genuinely unexpected and I'm kinda speechless 🙂 I'd love to have a look. Would you be willing to have a look at my art and let me know what you think? Or for me to post the art on this forum (or send to PJ for a Friday Fix Up)?
I'm really focussed on learning and building confidence right now, and feedback is the most helpful way for me to progress. I actually enjoy getting feedback anyway... as it forces me to look at what I do differently and think critically. Other than submitting one off drawings or paintings to competitions I'm not really interested in formally submitting anything, and if I did use your scripts for portfolio work I'd let you know and make sure you're credited.
I can't promise I'll work on anything soon, maybe in the next two months at the latest, but feel free to email brendan [dot] meachen [at] gmail.com
Bolt, likewise, I'd love to get some scripts once I've had a go at Sharky's. Recognising you're probably busy already would you be willing to provide me with feedback if I drew some art for them? Or just post them on this forum for review?
If it's work that's already published I want to ensure it's treated properly, so just let me know what's ok and what isn't.
Thanks so much for the support!
Bren- it's up to you how you want the feedback.
Public feedback can be very valuable, as everyone will get to see what happens, but you may be more comfortable with private feedback.
The PJ option is good as well- PJ knows his stuff.
Either way is fine for me.
Thanks Bolt!
I'm happy with public feedback, as it encourages me to commit to improving. Also I figure if I want my artwork to be published then I need to be ready for public scrutiny.
Also if it's public hopefully someone else will see it and learn from my mistakes ;) critiques of other people's work have been a useful resource so it's good to give something back.
I'm not really that precious, and won't get offended. If I draw something crappy I can always just draw some more.
Bren, you have mail.
Just throwing out my tuppence ha'porth here. It's dynamic, stimulating and distinct. It definitely works for the subject matter and I would be interested personally in seeing more of the story. I would also disagree with the label 'awful' to describe the figure. I think you're being a bit harsh on yourself there. Go have a look at some of Jon Bogdanove's Superman work if you want to see awful figure work.
I think the comments about the arm length and hose are right. The leg seems disconnected as well if you look at it too long. I do also wonder if there is a little too much space at the bottom with not much going on. Then again, if the intent was to give a sense of perspective looking up the ramp ..... Not sure, spitballing a bit here. Perhaps someone can help me out here (or shoot me down in flames).
Certainly looking forward to seeing more, particularly an extended narrative piece.
Thanks Tjm86. Regards the ramp, it's a mixture of perspective and I'd say lazyness on my part. I did rough a few heads there to show the medics in Steven's story, however I thought the composition was problematic. It looked like Tor Cyan was throwing the droid at them... I guess this is where my inexperience with storytelling comes in. I'm not confident making that kind of judgement, so I went the easy way of "let's just draw less". The Legendary Shark has sent me some scripts to practice on, I've got a lot to learn :)
Good shout on the disembodied leg. I think that's a perspective problem. The leg should be twisted a bit more to the right. I'll keep that in mind next time.
Not sure how I feel about Jon Bogdanove after doing a Google search... He got published for 8 years producing work like that?!
