Title: These things I like.
Post by: DavidXBrunt on 24 March, 2009, 10:16:18 AM
What are the things in life that make you smile just by thinking about them

The Snake by Al Wilson. Northern soul perfection, catchy, upbeat, funny. It's the perfect song to get a night going, it's one that's guaranteed to be played about half ten at every party I throw. Just when everybody is merry enough to get up and jive.

Holidays in Llandudno. Faded Victorian glamour crazy AND miniature golf. A choice of Ormes. I just need to step off the train and I feel more relaxed, perfect place to mooch around, simultaneously quiet and busy it's friendly, cosy, and beautiful. Close to Conway and Rhos too.

Single narrow subject museums. i heart museums but I especially like ones with very narrow focusses. As great as the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is it's too broad a focus. There's something appealingly crazed about the monomaniacal enthusaim of the Keswick Pencil Museum, the Southport Lawnmower Museum or the Northwich Salt Museum.

The Eurovision Song Contest. In a completely un-ironic and serious way. I actually get a bit annoyed when people assume I'm in it for the camp and the sneering. Well okay, I like the camp but I have to admit the last few years of Terry got me a bit cross because you know what? As soon as I hear Te Deum I'm in the zone. Focussed on the competitors. And I don't need somene telling me it's shit. Last year a couple of my closest friends came around, we had a Euro buffet and score sheets...

Kylie Minogue. Ever hear any bad reports of Kylie? You never will. Pop music that is happy to be pop, and trying to do nothing else than to brighten up three minutes of your life, coupled with perfect visuals. The live concerts are stunning, spectacular and not ashamed to throw things like I should be so lucky in to the mix.

When the Boat Comes In. Agit-prop telly from another age. Perfectly cast, angrry drama about the birth and openness to corruption of the Union movement, capped off with a mesmerising performance from the under-rated king of Telly James Bolam.

2000 A.D. Natch.

So, you people, what aer the things in life that make you happy. The more esoteric the better.

Having long rambling discussions about comics and Star Wars with my son. The highlight being this weekend and our email to Mike Mingola about Hellboy- to which the great man replied, thus making a 7 year old's weekend and cementing me as Best Dad in the World.

And connected with the point above: Star Wars. In any form- yes, even I-III. I love it. It's been part of my life since I was 7 or 8.

Thunder Road: First track on the album Born to Run, and the greatest piece of rock and roll ever commited to any medium. In turns sad, mournful and lonely, but also funny, moving and in the end, hopeful.

The Dark Tower: Stephen King's masterwork. A hugely ambitious project that is at once massive in scope and scale, and highly personal.

Dr Who: for much the same reasons as Star Wars, only it's been there for longer. My earliest memory is of watching Planet of the Spiders.

Picking up a bit of rough wood or sheet steel and, several hours later, having an item of hopeful beauty in my hand.

Having hot buttered croissants and ice cold coke.

Going to Manchester and sitting somewhere with an ice-cream and watching the world go by.

Reading a really good book.

I have simple tastes, really.

QuoteHolidays in Llandudno.

I'm from Llandudno. The place where it's still 1952 :)

I just noticed that the second half of my post isn't there!

I'd done an edit and added a couple more...

Cherry Coke, the king of soft drinks. I had a regular coke yesterday and it made me realise the full subtleties of it's cherry brethren.

The cheeseburgers from Sunat's takeaway. Epic.

Ah that explains it! Bet you're hypnotised by all the crowds and flashing lights, eh?  :D It's not quite as spectacular if you live here, but I do actually love this city and I thank Grud daily that I don't have to live daaaaahn saaaarf, so add that to the list.

and also:
Ginger Beer
Amsterdam
Leaving the alarm set at weekend so I can wake up and THEN go back to sleep
Roast beef, roast spuds, yorkshire pud and thick gravy.
Sid Meier's Civilaztion games
The enormous feeling of physical well-being following a perfect shit
The pre-Raphaelite and Victorian paintings in Manchester City Gallery, particularly the Rossetti ones and Sappho by Charles-August Mengin, whom I visit from time to time

I'll try again...

Moonlight Sonata: I remember being literally stopped in my tracks the first time I listened to this. I can't quite get my head around the fact that a melody as pure as this came from a human mind.

Under My Skin: Stick this on your headphones. Frank's phrasing has never been better. Listen to how he not so much sings the melody as dances around it.

Sauasages. I love them. I could eat them every night.

Dark Shadows: A six hundred hour long Hammer Horror soap opera, the very thought of which fills me with joy. I once watched 21 episodes in a day.

Geometry Wars 2: (deadline mode) The most intense three minutes of video gaming ever, every time. Perfection.

Powell and Pressburger films: The first time I saw A Canterbury Tale was one of the most inspiring artistic experiences of my life.

2000AD is also quite good. 8-)

My favorite meal at the moment....

Eggs, & thinnly sliced tomatoes on the frying pan.

Luncheon Sausage, thinnly sliced and heated in the microwave on high for three mintues until they are slightly crispy.

On toasted sandwiches.

I have also developed a taste for microwaved tuna or salmon in those little tins.

Every first mouthful out of every two litre bottle of the non-descript brand of Cola that I have been drinking for the last three years.

It's always the first mouthfull  that is the best.

A tall chilled glass of cold milk.

Thats the full extenf of my diet. Sometimes,  there are different variations on that theme when I add another food or foodgroup. But thats it basically.

As I have been trying to lose weight, and I have actaulley cut out imbetween meals, snacks.

No more microwave pizzas, or burgers.

Perhaps I should add cereal or weat bix and daily excercise.

I also like "Deep Purple " their greatest hits.

"Blue Oyster Cult'  despite references that name I think might have to a scene from the first Police Academy movie.

I don't mind classical music, but I just don't like all of it.

I love finding out obscure stuff from trawling the internet that wasn't allowed to be taught in schools and sometimes gets used in sceince fiction back storys.

Good science fiction or fantacy film movies or just good old movies. Alot of them made before my time. They were the best.

MY computer, my Playstation two console, my computer games, my television, the network cable connection.

My wireless keyboard, and mouse. asI can some time lie in bed typing  or sitting up with the keyboard on my lap.

My bed, which can also be a couch or a chair or a table. for leaving piles of comics and graphic novels on.

Which is a revolutinary peice of furntiture called a "Comfort Cube'. Eight I wwhcih I own. Being roughly two and a half feet on four sides and one and half feet tall.

Made from canvas, wood and stuffing.

So, they can be moved together to form a bed or couch. I can pile them up into a type of armchair. Having them stackd two high to form the arms of a chair on either side of me and behind me to form the back rest.

They can also be stacked right up into a column for extra floor space.

Nothings as restricted as a large piece of furniture which couldn't  be moved for the other bookshelves, desks, cabinents in my room already.

Its' sort like Transformers furniture.

Right at the moment I have this set up like  bed with one cuvbe stacked for use as  table.

If you can get used to continuosly  having to push them together every so often, I know it was well worth money I spent getting these last December.

Everytime I lie back on them.

Since before then I had been sleeping and sititng on the floor as I had to lean my bed mattress up aganist the window so that I could still move around the room.

It;s quite obvious what other things I like.

Coffee. One of life's great and simple pleasures. Sometimes I'll stick with a plain black, sometimes I'll go for something a bit more exotic. One of the best things about going to New York was having breakfast in a diner near Times Square; French Vanilla coffee and a bacon and egg wrap. Can't beat it.

Finding a cinema that still serves fresh popcorn. They're few and far between, usually it's popped, put in a bag and left there for God knows how long until I buy it (and yes, I'll still buy it) so finding a cinema where I can still get some straight out of the popper is fantastic.

Great TV. Lost, BSG, West Wing, etc. Sometimes if I'm bored I'll just watch some of my favourite moments instead of a whole episode. Locke's introduction in lost remains a firm favourite. "We hunt!" Hell yes we do!

Youtube. May sound silly, but me and my mates have spent more then a few good evenings just with a few beers, watching random stuff on youtube, going wherever the links take us. A grand way to spend an evening.

Reading my son his bedtime stories, and watching his tastes shift and evolve night by night - right now it's Paddington, which suits me fine.  Recently I started a re-telling of The Hobbit from my own faulty memory while we were on a long drive (we got as far as Rivendell).  It was one of the happiest moments of my life  when the next time we were in the car, he demanded to know what happened to "Gandalf and the Dwarfs" next.

My Cubika Espresso maker, a wedding present from my work colleagues, who had no reason to give me anything at all, never mind something so awesome.  I've worked hard at learning its ways, and now I love it beyond all material things.  Which brings me to...

Coffee shops in book shops.  The best idea ever.  My platonic ideal is long gone, the Winding Stair in Dublin (strong coffee, banana sandwiches, a huge antiquarian section and a view of the Liffey... sigh), but the dream lives on in other secondary forms.

Cheese, in all its forms (apart from the maggoty ones).  There is no finer foodstuff, nor one so variable.  Right now I'm thinking about the recipe for chiropitas, which leas me nicely to...

Greece.  Now there's a place to be.

Being on or in or under or beside the sea.  Ferries, dinghies, snorkels, and nothing at all, cold or warm, rough or still.

Star Wars.  Like a good relationship, sometimes I want to strangle it, sometimes it breaks my heart, but more often than not it just fills me with joy.

Sex.  I really like sex.  Llandudno is indeed fab, but I think I prefer sex.

Ice Cream. I'm fairly certain it will kill me, but I just can't get enough of that dairyful stuff.

Seeing parents refusing to cave in to the demands of their wailing brats. Especially teenage mothers. That little shit ruined your life, why show mercy?

Libraries.

Snooker.

Best sound in the world: The sound of either of my children laughing.

Best smell in the world: Freshly cut grass (despite allergies), bacon, freshly baked bread, vanilla.

Best taste in the world: Chinese crispy aromatic duck (with all the trimmings) - is probably my number 1.

Best sight in the world: (too many) my Children are probably nr 1. (various places in England)

Best touch in the world: (female) BREASTS!

Tea. There's no other wonder potion quite like it. Infinite in flavours and varieties, from the most delicate Earl Grey to the heartiest English Breakfast. It can be served with milk, lemon, sugar or none of the above. It can be brewed in a kitchen, on the side of a mountain or in the middle of the arctic tundra. The very idea of it will raise the spirits of a group of piss-wet campers or freezing hikers, while the taste will bring a smile to the face of even the most miserable. Truly, this is an elixir sent from above.

Second-hand bookshops. They're a dying institution, sad to say, but when you come across one in some distant corner of a strange town there's no better way to kill half an hour or more, searching through shelves of badly-sorted volumes just looking for something which will catch your eye. And the smell, oh the smell!

Sitting on a grassy hillside on a glorious English summer's day (of which there are four per year) with a book in one hand, a frisbee to hand, and live music somewhere nearby.

Shepherd's Pie. It's my favourite dinner and I like having bread with it and making Shepherd's Pie sandwiches.

Fun music. Yes I like seriuos emotional and thought provoking music but I also like Chas and Dave and Boney M. People don't do the Hokey Cokey or the Conga anymore and i think it's a bloody shame.

Lego. My favourite toy bar none as a child and still a fantastic invention. Standing or kneeling on a Lego brick is sweet, nostalgic and excrutiating pain.

Rubbish films which are actually great. Why don't they make films like commando anymore? Or Smokey and the Bandit?

Places where you can talk about stuff like this and people don't sneer and think you're being uncool or think that you're trying to be cool in an ironic way. Give me a local boozer over a trendy bar any day.

Girls that like local boozers better than trendy bars and aren't afraid of showing themselves up by doing the Hokey Cokey.

Going for a walk up Carn Marth. which I live on the edge of and sitting at the top gazing at the verdant lush  South Coast and the Channel on one side and the Barren Stark and utterly beautiful North Coast on the other.

Just makes me feel alive every time.

Doing that with my wife and Son, taking the Binocs and sharing our joy of watching the wild birds is an different but equally great way to enjoy the same.

When i'm stress I just think about going up there on the next Sunny day.

Going down to the sea.. thinking of that brings a smile to my face.

Other things include my wife, my son, of course My dad more so than ever now when i think back, a good rugby match, going out with the missus to see a good folk act. Many others no doubt.

A pint of cold semi-skimmed milk from a glass.
The cool side of the pillow.
2000AD.
A new book from a favorite author.
Steak and chips.
Riding a motorbike.
Completing the daily crossword.
Women. Especially ones with wider interests than soap operas and reality shows. But I'm not choosy.
Saturday mornings at work, when I can get on without constant f*ckwit questions and listen to radio2 with only the noise from my own air tools to interfere with my listening pleasure. Bliss.
A raucous fart.
Sleep.

And I'm with RAC on the subject of sausages. I can say without fear of contradiction that I've eaten far too many of them for my own good over the years. I'd rather be big boned and happy than skinny and, well, skinny.

Reading to my eldest at night, when he goes to bed. Currently, it's The Witches by Roald Dahl, and he's absolutely loving it. Even better is that I get to put on loads of brilliant voices for all the characters (Grandmamma is a cross between Swedish and Welsh and The Grand High Witch is a throaty nazi rasp/roar that I can only do between the hour of seven pee em and whenever we finish the chapter(s). If I try at any other time of day, I sound like a cast member of Allo Allo) He LOVES it, and it's terrifying him in equal measure.

Patrick Doyle's soundtrack to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein- very much my favourite CD. Although I affect "not to like music", I put this on when no one's around and get all tempestuous and/ or cry.

The hugs my youngest gives me when I get home.

Watching my wife do her thang on stage. Sexy, funny, daring, naughty, clever, and mine.

Standing on the West Hill, watching the fishing boats come in, and just staring down into the Old Town, watching it pootle along as it has done for nearly a thousand years.

Coffee and a fag first thing in the morning.

Being a third of the way into a book I'm really enjoying, knowing I've got two-thirds left to go.

The opening titles of The Wicker Man and An American Werewolf In London. Because I know that I'm going to be in cinematic heaven for the next couple of hours.

Waterstones, in Hastings town centre. Where they stock loads of comic trades and where I can chat to Matt the comics-guy for ten minutes about stuff we like.

Primeval. The only tv show that guarantees all my family will be in one place at the same time, watching it.

My cat, the real Spooky, despite her shitting in the corner of the lounge and puking on my shoes/ pears/ sandwiches at various times.

2000ad. Because it's not just for Wednesdays.

Steev

Addlestones Cider makes me grin like an idiot according to my friend.

Ducks. They're great. I love the way they just sort of float around and quack every now and then. If I'm ever feeling down, a quick jaunt round the duck pond in Queen's Park will cheer me up without fail. The next couple of months are a great time, seeing the new ducklings and watching them get bigger every week. Also very tasty.

2nd Hand shops. Books, records, comics? Fuck ebay. Nothing better than an afternoon spent rummaging through boxes and shelves of stuff in the offchance that you'll find something worthwhile.

Flicking through tv channels and happening across a film I've seen a thousand times and watching it again anyway. The equivalent of comfort eating I suppose, but I've never knowingly passed up an opportunity to see Die Hard, Convoy, Bill & Ted, Flash or Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Feedback. I should probably have grown out of being excited by random noise, but I still love when a band really properly freak out and make some serious noise.

Boney M.  Not that they are my faovorite, They apparently tour do alot tours in Australia, partically  in the small towns. So, I had to go and see them. At that time I had work Fuit picking in one of the well known Victorian orchards. I thought they were worth seeing in person as their music is well known to me ( By the Rivers of Babylon.) and I just wanted see them, so I could say that I saw them. I don't think they were entirely the origianl line up, but he same female lead though. That was back in early 2001.

I gotta agree, and have found that one of these are a excelllent alternative.

I got one of these for Xmas as I don't always go out drinking. I think it makes for a great place to lay my head and it never gets hotor even warm. It's the stuff it's made from. I don't really have pillow anyway.

QuoteCarry-On films and old British war films on a Sunday afternoon.

Have you seen? " How I won the War"? great old film in the tradition of Monty Python and Carry On. it has Michael Crawford and John Lennin. The.... John Lennon! [spoiler:3ggvhaxx]Strangely, he gets shot three times in this film. ( Well I know it's a number of times.) Thats abit of a preveiw it seems. Surrealism, all the dead allied soldeirs come back painted entirely one colour, correspsonding with the battle they fought and died in some way.[/spoiler:3ggvhaxx] They showing the Carry On films alot lately. On Sunday afternoons. Funny, they just aren't what they used to be, though.

I forgot to mention before....

I love  the sound of waves crashing against the shore line of a beach or even a cliff face, but at night when the efffect is emphasised.

The sound of rain, usealley heavy steady rain, and thunder when you know you don't need to go outdoors.

Sometimes i like nothing better than digging in victorian landfill sites. Its the most exciting thing ever as you dont know what will fall out of the sides of the hole next. The next best bit is taking the finds home and cleaning them up.

The thrill is when you expose the neck of or base of a bottle or whatever and then dig around it and it turns out to be unbroken.

There are 2 or 3 big conventions each year for bottlediggers and the hobby has a big following.

I got into it after walking the dog in the woods next to my house when i was about 12 and finding bottles between the roots of a tree that had recently blown over.

When I was living out of my Ultility and a caravan in Sydney.

There  was fast food resturaunt that speicalised in these deep fried Mushrooms in batter or bread crumbs.

I was also in the habit of buying Spag-bol ( I 'll be damned spell that correctly, right now.) mince in a can ( Campells) , that speical flat, round greek bread. I think it's called peta bread, phildelphia Cream cheese or just grated or sliced or blocked  cheese.

Spread or lay the cheese on the flat peta bread ( It's sort like pan cake.). Spread a thick layer of the Spag-bol mince on topa nd then roll it into cylinda. Like you are rolling thick cigar, except yuou not.

Dig in. but it's messy.

Last Itime a tried thsi dih I supplement the spage -bol with Chilli Con carn already made up in a can after heating it up. You could go either way with Spag-bol mince. Cooked or uncooked, straight out of the can.

I also developed a taste for Chilli-Conn Carn. Not out of a can, but brought as kit from the supermarket. Though it's dear at twenty dollars a meal. WHich could serve a small family.

But I would cook this up in a  large wok, have my fill and leave the rest in the fridge for breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day.

Sushi Rolls. Although I could never make these, I use to buy up to six at a time whilst living in Sydney.

There' something about the seaweed ( The diet of Cthulhu 's Old Ones.) tthese were wrappped in. As long as I ahd plenty to drink as they are very absorbant.

Potatoe wedges.

Spicey Chciken Chippees.

Oporto's Hot Chips.

Has anybody here tried Dampa bread?

Awesome.  While by no means the modern-day Ahasuerus that Devon's Daddy is, I have one of those too.  It's a kaffenion on the harbour front at Katapola, on the island of Amorgos in the Small Cyclades, just down from the local ferry dock.  While there is another dock at Aegiali on the other end of the island, pretty much everyone and everything has to come or go by that spot eventually.  You can sit and watch tractors and blond Swedish backpackers, palettes of water and herds of goats, shower units and black-hatted Orthodox priests shuttling by silhouetted against the blue sky and bluer Aegean as you sip your Nes and wish that this country's only flaw wasn't its vile taste in coffee.  Although I was only there for one week four years ago, like DD I go there in my head whenever things start to get especially crap.
