Not the most original Dredd related thought I admit. We know what his lower face looks like. Apparently he keeps spare eyeballs, so have we seen them? Dredd's never been seen without his helmet except for that execrable Sylvester Stallone abortion. Also he did not wear his helmet in Necropolis, but he was wearing a big floppy hat, and his face was burnt off. Dredd's a clone, so if Rico or Kraken ever took their helmets off we'd know what Dredd looked like.

Despite the notion that we never see Dredd without his helmet, all the clones we have running around now kind of put the kibosh on that:

If you look at my attic thread, we do have Ezquerra's depiction of what Dredd's face looks life in the comic adaptation of the original film. He 'aint drawing Stallone, that's for sure.

We do know what Dredd looks like - he's the big lad on the cover most weeks. Details of his fizzog are about as relevant as the precise configuration of the wrinkles on his weenis.
(I'm under contractual obligation to post this under all such threads until 2031, with an option on renewal should I/the medium of comics last that long).
You're all wrong. As I said on another thread, he looks like Nick Nolte. You're especially wrong, TB, because some psi pointed out a while ago that there's something noteworthy about Dredd's weenis.

Dredd's face? Well, I always wondered, considering he and Rico are clones, wouldn't be if he looks like Rico? If it means anything, Dredd's blondie (as briefly shown in Day the Law Died).

That's always been my thought too. Take Dredd's lower face plus his nose, and merge with a pic of Rico's eyes/forehead/hair and ears.
Otherwise he looks like Ted Bullpitt (Ross Higgins) from Kingswood Country. He's got that pinched kind of nose Ezquerra would do, along with a Cam Kennedy Dredd-ish chin.

It's a funny one, that. Kind of works but he looks a bit too much like, well, Bruce Wayne, as you say, for me. I'd see Dredd more shaven-headed and grizzled than the debonair semi-Devlin-Waugh type here. I'd imagine Bisley, buoyed on by nobody asking him to take all the willies and tits out of Sláine, had decided he could do what he wanted. But I'm glad they stopped him breaking this particular taboo.
EDIT - I also think that while Karl Urban's scowly jaw was perfect for the job in the film, the rest of film Dredd's face somehow doesn't look like the rest Karl Urban's face in my mind.

First time I've seen that panel and it's a beaut but it does follow a common Carlos trope, as evidenced with Stainless Steel Rat, Major Eazy and Cursed Earth Koburn - make all leading men look like James Coburn.
Admittedly here it's a youthful JC before he went prematurely grey, maybe back when he was doing TV westerns in the late 50s.

Part of Dredd lore I'm weak on - when did Dolman have a face change?
In his original appearance, Brothers of the Blood. When he quits the Academy and heads off to be a Space Cadet the Dept makes him alter his appearance to save future confusion (?). Not bothered by Rico or any of the dozen others, though.
Just because we never see his face, that doesn't necessarily mean that nobody in MC1 (or the rest of that world) never sees it either. Maybe Dolman's face was changed because Dredd's face is well known and the change avoids awkward questions, nefarious plots, farces, and misunderstandings.

Yeah, I think that point can't be emphasised enough. That early episode and some Chimpsky shenanigans aside, the thing with Dredd's hidden face is entirely for our benefit as readers. It doesn't exist in MC1.

Are you sure? I remember a story about some rich hunting types who captured Dredd - the prize was to see his face. The other judges recognised him helmetless when they arrived, but that's hardly unexpected. It was an eighties one, but Dredd and his world had already been pretty well established by the time it was published.
There was also that Megazine story where a blind girl wanted to 'see' his face by touching it, though it was early Robbie Morrison so it's up to you whether that's canon or not.
Heh, I'd forgotten those! I suppose I see it more that Dredd-under-the-helmet is unfamiliar to citizens because he's always in uniform, indeed he is the uniform. He's on duty 23hrs 50min a day, every day, and so he wears the helmet. It's not like he consciously hides his face, or that it's a state secret.
Seems only fair to also post up the Dredd-after-a-face-change image:

This is by far the best solution to these stories - I hate the ones (thankfully few and far between) that suggest Dredd's got some weird disfigurment or phobia.
I don't know if it's enough credible, but Alan Moore's Wagesof Sin from Future Shocks reminds me on how Dredd might look like, like the meanest SOB in the universe.

One of the earliest issues has Dredd showing his face to bunch of perps, but the image is censored for supposedly being too visually intense. I read that it was originally meant to have his face shown but (Belardinelli's) art didn't pull it off properly.
If anything, we know that Dredd is blondie. At least in earlier issues.
I suppose Justice Department would want every judge to be feared and respected equally, so while it might not be illegal for one to show his or her face, regs probably mandate them to be in full uniform whilst on duty (like a contemporary copper expected to always wear a hat). Dredd's a stickler for regs, so... Getting a photo of Dredd's face, then, might be one of those crazy fads the cits enjoy so much.
As an aside, I'm just watching Boys from the Blackstuff and it struck me how Dreddish a face Yosser (Bernard Hill) had when this was made. If it wasn't for that 'tache, of course.

I think the whole face idea serves as "justice is blind", because Dredd ofcourse represents justice, first and foremost. But not every judge in MC1 wears a mask.

I don't recognise that art, where is it from?
The blind girl doesn't count, how else is she supposed to know what he looks like? Look at a photo with her eyes?
Dredd is the clone of Fargo, who didn't always wear a helmet and who must have been famous when the president appointed him Special Prosecutor for Street Crime and began establishing the street judges. So everyone would know what Dredd looks like. I can't explain that hunting story, but fuck it.
If you mean the photographer story, it's Shaggy's Big Shoot, prog 1539 (Robbie Morrison & Mike McMahon).

That's my view too. We've certainly seen him getting into uniform, helmet off - just not in a way we can see. The story (which has now been mentioned) about the photographer going after a pic of his face as if it were the holy grail was a mistake, in my opinion. And it is a bit of a game for the reader - having Dredd wearing his helmet while taking a bath etc is just hilarious.
