Prog / Prog 2251 - Escape into the unknown
« on: Today at 02:45:26 PM »
And so after last weeks excellent prog the new line-up starts in earnst, without all the extra bonus stuff and its all looking very positive still.

Dredd is a solid action piece, moving things on but focused in the thrill. Good stuff.

Diaboliks pushes things forward in no less speedy fashion, if without the gun pkay, but is equally well recieved.

Scarlet Traces, page 5 top right panel, anyone else thing this is a tip of the hat to Michel Fiffe? Anyway glorious art all told and negotiations move to a slightly cliche, well you either fight with us or wait for them to come for you anyway, but it does a good job of expanding the history of the Solar System.

Pandora Perfect also briskly moves, pieces in place, hijinx had and jewels lifted. Now one suspects the fun will really start.

The Out - third story of the week about an aquisition that will drive the rest of the story forwatd. In this case an 'address book'. Its wonderfully done stuff, with deft humour, interesting world building and doors opening to possiblities. Brilliant stuff.

So yeah this one does suffer in comparision to last weeks joyous opening and is often the case with these early story issues pieces are put in place, or in this case, bought, stolen, or otherwise aquired, that will allow the rest of the story to take flight. But those pieces have been quickly put into place and we're good to go. Enjoying this lot and have much optimisim.

VOTING CLOSED

Well if the other tie closing today in this group was call one way, this one was just the opposite and a bit of a classic. Traitor went three up, then Moses pulled it back to level pegging, before they traded blows and in the end this one wnet to...

no one.

DRAW

Which given the final round of ties sets up a fascinating battle for the second spot in the final round of games next week!

Group 4 going into the final round of games

                                      Points   Votes Diff
Rage                                  6             14
Traitor to his kind            4               5
The Moses Incident         1              -4
Beast of Milton Keynes   0              -15

There might seem like there's a big swing required between 2nd and 3rd... well there is... but the remaining matches mean that is entirely possible and while 1st seems nailed on the runners up slot hangs in the balance.

VOTING CLOSED... at last...

Well I could have waited until Sunday 3452th September and I don't think the result would have changed one bit. This was was always pretty clear cut and wen to

Not quite sure how this will go. But we have a day to find out. Get ya votes in and I'll count when I'm home tomorrow.

My this one is tough. The Moses Incident is a classic. I thought it would romp ties and jog to the later rounds... what do I know. And you know here while its a great story the intensity of

Traitor to his Kind

really carries that thrill home.

A day to go, but its formalities really isn't it. I'll count up ... at some point tomorrow (I'm away but will get it done).

And my vote... well its not hard is it

VOTING CLOSED

Them gronks they can't catch an even break can they. Fighting so hard to qualify, then battling Schicklegruber to a stand still, but only getting the draw. Now against the spralling Outlaw the story put up a good fight... but again nothing as

Outlaw

Takes this and sets up a fascinating final round of matches.

Group 3 going into the final round of matches

Outlaw                                6              12

Gronk Affair                       1               -3
The Son                              0                -11

So this one was a bit of a struggle. Te sentiment attached to The Son has really challenged the cold hard uber entertainment of Grab but in the end Johnny chasing Hitler... well it of course went to

Schicklgruber Grab

Just finished a re-read of Bulletproof Coffin and it remains a glorious wonder. Meta, yet never off-blown... though utterly full of fancy and wonder. A tribute to everything that's cool and fun. A kick at all the big boys and what they do. Though never forgetting to be wonderful fun, tightly ploted and inspiringly original even on re-read.

A work of genius.

Well that's interesting... and I've also no idea whether its good or bad news. Returning to things like this always feels like a sticky wicket. It could also be very backward looking... but he'll have developed as a writer and show runner. Would surely (???) only return if he wanted to do new and different things.

At the time the relaunch was a success so... well it feels awkward but you never know could be good news...

... if nothing else it'll certainly get folks talking!

Just today to go and while there seems to be a clear leader its not going to take many votes to swing this one so the result isn't as expected when I count up this morning.

And it will be no surprise to anyone who has seen my comments on Outlaw to know I could be the start of any swing back as I'm no fan of the strip and and love the other so this one is a clear win (well for me) for

The Gronk Affair

Very quiet here so if you fancy a vote there is today to get it in before I count up in the morning.

For me, well the Son goes an important job and while it might not have been known at the time provided a beautiful cap end to the story of Johnny Alpha. However my pick

The Schicklgruber Grab

Is just such rip snorting fun. As AlexF say it can be accused of being too knowing, the thing is that is only an issue if it fumbles things and this one does. Its a 70 kids comic fans fantasy. What if 2000ad met Battle and it knows it.

VOTING CLOSED

Not even close as this one goes to

Portrait of a Mutant

The group however, as it goes into the final round... but is the difference in Votes Diff the clue as to how this one will go???

Group 2 Table going into the final round of matches...

                                               Points       Vote Diff
Portrait of a Mutant                6                  20
Incident on Mayger Minor      6                  14
Bad Boys Bust                          0                  -14
The Two-Faced Terror             0                  -20

VOTING CLOSED

There was a moment there when Bad Boys started to look like they could make this close and even, possibly rustle up a surprise. It would have been a big surprise, probably too big to be a possibility and in the end it was a clear win to

Incident in Mayger Minor

And as we'll see this has set up a crunch tie in the final round of matches...

Just read the whole of Red Baron (had only read the first two volumes before now, and it really is a masterpiece. In some ways it does indulge the art a little and the story could feel slight for the three volumes it appears over. However the art is astonish and the use of the pages masterful, as thought he story is slight the atmosphere and dark tension is supreme.

And the art. wow. just WOW. Its stunning. The closest comparison I can think of is George Pratt (who interestingly enough did an Enemy Ace comic for DC), but it cleaner, while not losing a drop of the energy.

Its an absolute wonderful comic and I can't recommend it enough.
