Books & Comics / PARAGONcomic hits THIRTY!
14 January, 2022, 06:28:19 PM

http://kck.st/3qmYbR7

Thirty issues of a small press comic is a mighty achievement! Not many comics reach thirty issues these days - and I don't just mean self published comics, either! Even the big US boys rarely let a comic hit those numbers and the 70's British anthologies never got that far with their Hatch, Match and Dispatch policy.
Yet here we are with a celebratory special, this 32 page A4 sized comic includes a 20 page adventure featuring the four main heroes of PARAGON;

Spencer Nero - the British agent with the super-powered Janus mask which he dons when indulging his penchant for punching Nazis,
Ganesh - the six-limbed superhero from the sub-Continent! A sci-fi take on the Hindu God,
Jikan - the time travelling, demon hunting samurai,
Bulldog - the anthropomorphic defender of the skies above Blighty.
And cameos from several others from past stories!

Written by Spencer Nero creator Greg Meldrum and ably illustrated by regular collaborator Scott Twells it is not to be missed!

This time around, rather than list back issues as an option to back you can choose what you would like as  an add-on. Back issue availability is VERY limited so if you haven't got them, get in quick. Also as add-on extras are the utterly brilliant hardback Christmas annual (only a few left!) and the collected tales of Spencer Nero over two books and three volumes of The Jikan Chronicles - quality adventures for two of PARAGON's finest heroes! Read their escapades from the very beginning!

But that's not all! Also available as a backer option for your bundle of comic-y goodness is a BULLDOG t-shirt. If you've grabbed the t-shirts on offer on previous Kickstarters you'll need this to add to your collection. It's a belter!

Thirty issues of quality comics. You need this in your life! Back a copy! Tell your friends!
Tell them to buy a copy too!

Books & Comics / What did Santa bring you?
26 December, 2021, 06:51:17 PM
Well for a comics forum there's not much chat on this topic!
Come on, what did you get for Christmas?

I blagged myself a copy of Toppi:Japan
brand new collection of the UFO comic strips from Countdown
the fan publication of Blakes 7 Annual 1982 (just released via lulu.com)
and, of course, the PARAGON annual (which I just happen to publish)

And you? What did you get?

I'm surprised there's been no thread for the new series of Doctor Who. Have you all given up on it?
I'm enjoying this latest series for the 13th Doctor. The TARDIS got a little crowded last two series with three others - her Fam - having to have screen time but I enjoyed tonight's episode with the Sontarans. Last week was a little hectic but this week was a good story given time to breath. John Bishop as Dan is an enjoyable addition and I like his doggy guardian - I keep hearing Sean Bean under the fur but it can't be him, he'd have died by now if it was.

I've long thought I should collect the Battle Ganesh story from PARAGON - and here it is!

This year's awesome annual is 68 pages of fantastic stories from the brilliant anthology of small press contributors of this parish.

Contents include;
the sci-fi take on the tale of the elephant headed Hindu God in Battle Ganesh, by The Emperor and the late, great Stephen Prestwood.

Dinosaurs in Africa in a Bulldog tale from the archives, written as always, by Jason Cobley

Rupert the Bear style rhyming antics from L'il Ganesh, by Dave Candlish and Jim Cameron

An all new Spencer Nero adventure, written by our own Greg Meldrum and Scott Twells.

Imagine if Dudley Watkins (creator of The Broons and Lord Snooty, amongst others) drew for the small press? Larks abound in Oor Ganesh by Dave Candlish

And more!

Books & Comics / The PARAGON comic thread
24 April, 2017, 03:14:58 PM
Let's just start with a few previous covers...

Don't they just look fantastic?

That's just a few of covers from past issues.
Not only have we had 19 regular issues but THREE Jikan Chronicles - collecting the stories of the time-travelling demon-hunting samurai,
TWO Spencer Nero Compendiums - the British agent who finds astonishing strength whenever he dons the mask of Janus,
collected editions of the complete stories Undertow and Cushing & Sons, four hardback christmas annuals and two horror comic spin-offs.

Now we are back with issue 20 and a swish new title masthead.

You know, there are professional publications that don't last this long and yet here we are, still going strong with a fantastic line up of stories. Recurring characters in stand alone stories so you don't need to know what has gone before as long as you know the basic premise;

Jikan - a double length episode - what if the time-hopping demon-hunting samurai landed on the Titanic? And he's not there to ice his drink...

Spencer Nero - Spencer Nero in India, and as enlightened and sympathetic to the people whose country it actually is as you'd expect an agent of the British Empire to be...

Bulldog - the anthropomorphic protector of the skies of Blighty! Bulldog has been going for over twenty years now - PJ Holden is a previous artist for his adventures. This issue, the Queen is dead and there's a search for a successor...

Not only do we have the regulars this time around but a one off, light hearted quest for a ragtag bunch of adventurers in A Star Falls

Over 40 pages for £2.99 (plus p&p)

It barely takes twenty minutes to read an American comic these days but for much the same price you could have a lot more fun reading a good old fashioned British anthology. This isn't an homage or a pastiche. This is a continuation of the fine style of comics I grew up reading in the 70s and 80s.

Buy your copy from the blogspot  http://paragoncomic.blogspot.co.uk/
or, if overseas, via lhttp://www.lulu.com/spotlight/PARAGONcomic

Contributor Dirk van Dom put it better than me when he said on his blog;
"No, it's not mainstream, its not glossy, its not full colour, it doesn't feature superhero types in gaudy-coloured spandex costumes pounding 50 shades of inconsequential sh*t out of each other, or female characters who have nothing going for them other than big tits and improbable asses. What it IS, is an old-school, no-bullshit, boys-own action/adventure comic reminiscent of the 2000ads and Eagles and Warlords and Battles and other glorious black-and-white comics that were so, so cool in the 80's. Its hard to find a comic nowadays that inspires the same kind of feeling picking up one of those comics back then did, but Paragon comes pretty close and it keeps on getting better. If nothing else, its got a lot of heart and its clear everyone involved has a great passion for the medium. Yes, I contribute to the comic so I may be a little biased... but I am just one of 10 people (writers, artists and letterers) whose work is featured in this issue, and every one of them deserves to have their work seen. If you don't like the stories, you might like the art. If you don't like the art, you might like the stories. If you don't like the stories OR the art, you might appreciate the effort and enthusiasm that has gone into every page. If you don't like that either, well, hey, at least you can say you tried!"

Give it a go!! Support your local small press!!

Books & Comics / PARAGON annual 2017
08 November, 2016, 10:52:16 PM
For the last few years I've been producing a hardback annual for Christmas as well as the regular issues of my action adventure anthology PARAGON over the year - and they've been absolute stonkers!

A brilliant mix of text stories, new tales featuring all the regular characters and reprints. Just like annuals from my youth.

So if you want to read more about Jikan, the time-travelling demon hunter or the adventures of Ganesh, the elephant headed Hindu God, or Captain Winston Bulldog, the anthropomorphic protector of the skies above Blighty, or Spencer Nero - the British agent who finds unearthly strength when he dons the Janus mask and this annual also sees the return of Icarus Dangerous - the boy from ancient Greece who flew to close to the sun and fell to earth when his wings melted - only to be rescued by aliens!

More details to be revealed very soon, but in the meantime here's the cover

Can you spot the influences?  ;)

Film & TV / Power of the Daleks
08 November, 2016, 10:33:14 PM
Can't believe no-one has posted about this yet!

BBC Store have been releasing episodes of the first Patrick Troughton story to buy on a daily basis prior to its' release on DVD in time for Christmas. It's an animated version of a lost story using the original soundtrack.
I've only seen the first episode so far but I think, for the most part, this works rather well. A little static in places but certainly better than the Ice Warriors animated episodes.
I think the best story to have cartoon recreations was the Cosgrove Hall animated Invasion and this is pretty close to that.

Anybody else seen it?

Offending the gods! Annoying the supernatural! Mildly irritating people who want to read sensible comics! Yes, Spencer Nero is back, in the second volume of his 1930s misadventures! Written by Greg Meldrum, and with art by Scott Twells (almost half the book, in fact!), Benjamin Rose, Jim Cameron, James Corcoran, Davey Candlish and Dave Snell, this collection includes The Paragon Paradox, as well as an exclusive prose story, and two tales of the Civil Centurion as yet unseen in the pages of PARAGON. By Minerva's merkin - buy 'Minerva's Merkin'!

It feels like the end of an era.
Stephen Prestwood has been an ever present in PARAGON since #4 when he took over as artist from me on the Battle Ganesh tale. Issue 4 was the first to start looking as good as I thought it could and it's no coincidence that that was Stephen's first contribution. (The cover to this issue is taken from his Ganesh work and just blew me away when I first saw it)

Stephen was a mainstay of the small press scene for many, many years. I suggest you read the tribute by Owen Watts on John Freeman's Down the Tubes website to see how long and how involved he had been
http://downthetubes.net/?p=31490

It's an indication of the esteem the man was held in that the editors of other comics have been so willing to let me reprint their work in this issue, so my thanks go to Jay Eales and Mike Sivier for the Hard Boiled Hitler strip (imagining Hitler as a superhero!), to John Short for his unsolicited X Men strip and to Matt McLaughlin for the episode of El Bigote – the undead bandit who fires quills from his 'tache! This was (so far as I know) the last strip Stephen worked on.

Reprints from the pages of PARAGON include his sequel to Icarus Dangerous (the boy whose wings melted and fell to Earth – but was rescued by aliens!), Spencer Nero (the Civil Centurian – a British agent who finds inhuman strength when he dons the Janus mask) and, of course, Bulldog (the anthropomorphic protector of the skies above Blighty).

Bulldog was the first strip I saw drawn by Mr P back when the character had his own comic, BAM! So when Jason suggested bringing the old dog back within the pages of PARAGON, Stephen was my first choice of artist. Happily, he agreed.

He never got to illustrate an episode of the time travelling demon hunter, Jikan, but we do have pin ups of his favourite characters in these pages so we can see what he would have done with the Japanese warrior. If only.

My thanks to all those letterers (never forget the letterers!), writers and editors who have made this collection possible. I hope it does the talents of the artist justice.

64 pages for £2.75 + P&P

Books & Comics / **PIMPING** - The PARAGON annual 2016
12 December, 2015, 08:52:15 PM
Like the sales starting in December, wearing a Christmas jumper ironically or putting glitter in your hipster beard, the PARAGON annual has become a recent tradition.

PARAGON is an old-school boys-own action/adventure comic reminiscent of the 2000ads and Eagles and Warlords and Battles and other glorious black-and-white comics that were so, so cool in the 70'S and 80's. It's hard to find a comic nowadays that inspires the same kind of feeling picking up one of those comics back then did, but PARAGON is as  close as you can get,  containing new stories, reprint, text tales and self contained adventures of our various heroes.
This years annual not only has a host of the regular contributors back to delight your sense of adventure but we also have a number of newcomers to add to the roster of talent.

So grab that bowl of brazil nuts and settle down for a good read!

It's called PARAGON for a reason!
