Just watched this on Netflix and really enjoyed it. It's very much like a Future Shock and has great visuals. Don't really want to say much more as I don't want to spoil it!

Film & TV / ‘Love, Death & Robots’ on Netflix.
16 March, 2019, 08:39:03 AM
Just a heads up that a very 2000 AD-esque series has landed on Netflix.

'Love, Death & Robots' is an anthology of eighteen animated futuristic shorts, very, very much in the Tharg's Future Shocks style. The episodes are between five to seventeen minutes long and feature a range of topics and animation styles, some of which are jaw droppingly good.

I've watched the first four and in the main, really enjoyed them. At times I felt they were trying a little too hard with the gratuitous nudity and violence, but not enough to spoil the experience (yeah, like gratuitous nudity ever spoilt anything!)

The four I watched were:

Sonne's Edge - underground, cybernetic monster fights. The CGI in this one looked incredible and the story certainty sets the graphic tone of the series.
Three Robots - like an Alan Moore comedic Future Shock, three robots go on a sightseeing tour of a post apocalyptic planet Earth. Funny and poignant this one.
The Witness - this one was more of a Time Twister. The animated style is absolutely stunning, extremely photorealistic with jarring bursts of graphics and cartoons bleeding into the shots. The tale shows a (mainly naked) woman escaping a killer after she witnesses him brutally murdering someone who looks just like her...
Suits - A digitally painted animation style for this one. It tells of a family of farmers preceding their land from monsters, using cool exosuits.

As I said, up to now, I'm really enjoying this. Like 2000 AD, because of the anthology format, if one isn't floating your boat, the next one comes along fairly quickly.

I'm going to binge the rest over the weekend, but currently, would recommend the series to you bunch of degenerates, especially if you are a fan of Black Mirror.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote for these, once again it's been fascinating to watch the covers jostle for first place, and it's great to see the diverse range of people's votes.

Let's start with the 2000 AD Cover of the Year, which is really bittersweet for reasons I'm sure you'll understand. So, the the top 3, in reverse order...

In third place is Carlos Ezquerra's final cover, the beautiful, and very fitting Strontium Dog cover of Prog 2081...

In second place, the brilliant Chris Weston gives us Dredd and a space monkey on Prog 2089. What's not to love?

And heart-wrenchingly, the clear winner is the gloriously gritty masterpiece by King Carlos Ezquerra that is the cover of Prog 2078. Utterly stunning. I'd give anything to be able to tell Carlos he'd won.

Congratulations to Carlos and Chris! Strangely, there were no real bubbling under covers, these three pretty much dominated the proceedings from the off...

The Megazine Cover of the Year was a much more hotly contested affair. The winners, in reverse order are...

In third place, Phil Winslade's amazing Lawless wraparound for Meg 402...

In second place, it's that man again, Chris Weston with his brilliant cover of Meg 400...

And the winner is.... Adam Brown with his action-packed, fully painted War on the Law cover of Meg 399!

Congratulations to Adam, Chris and Phil. I'll whizz them an email in the morning to let them know!

Again, thanks for voting everybody!

Games / Far Cry 5.
17 April, 2018, 08:24:31 AM
I've always enjoyed the Far Cry games and this one is just phenomenal! The Edensgate cult is absolutely terrifying and the story is taking some glorious twists and turns. It has some really dark and nasty themes as well as some moments and dialogue that have had me in stitches!

The immersion you feel in the world is exceptional, with some very clever narrative touches as well as some devastating exploration of mind control. Something BIG has just happened in the story which was incredibly well crafted, and absolutely unique in terms of exploiting the first person genre.  Sadly, this plot point was spoiled for me as some of the NPC's discussed the event before it actually happened on a couple of occasions, so I kind of guessed. Still, every time I hear a particular song now, I'm sure I'll get chills – so job done Ubisoft! Sorry to be vague here but I really don't want to spoil this for anyone else.

I've been playing the game pretty solidly for about three days now and I'm about halfway through the main story. It's absolutely huge! There are masses of distractions such as huntin' and fishin', hilarious 70's style stunt challenges, solving puzzles to find stash, climbing and flying in your wing suit as well is about dozens of entertaining and enriching side quests - oh, my real life family too! The arcade missions are a hoot too.

However, it's the main characters that have me hooked. The cult leader very charismatic, enigmatic and truly dangerous; The  opening scenes where you enter his compound to arrest him is extremely tense and getting up close to those David Koresh-like  glasses is truly scary! I've defeated one of his main disciples (the cruel Jacob, the guy responsible for training soldiers for the cause and thinning out the weak) and am now taking on the beautiful, manipulative Faith. The scenes where she gets in your head are wonderful, and really add to the sense of rapture and brainwashing the cult members display.

If you hadn't guessed, I'm loving this game and highly recommend it. This game shows why computer games as entertainment medium can be more involving, and more affecting than any other.

Well, if I haven't buggered up the spreadsheet. The results are as follows...

Bubbling under and just missing out on a top 5 place were Progs 2057 Revere/Indigo Prime by the beautiful Mr Boo Cook (this cover was in the top 3 for most of the voting period) and Prog 2058 by the master that is Cliff Robinson, aided as ever, by Dylan Teague on colours...

In fifth place, we have Prog 2054, another two colour masterpeice by the irrepressible Tiernen Trevallion. Brilliance!

I'm so pleased that this made the list, John McCrea and Mike Spicer's brilliant Harvey cover of Prog 2024.

In third place, I'm delighted to once again include Alex Ronald in the top 3 with his brilliant Paradox Vega cover of Prog 2016...

Aaaaand, in second place, the mighty Dave Kendall terrifies us all with his 'Fear Me' cover of Prog 2029...

General / The 2000AD Advent Calendar 2017!
30 November, 2017, 11:36:11 PM
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thrills in every store! Oooooooh, it's here, the highlight of the year, welcome to the eighth 2000AD Advent Calendar 2017!!!

Last year, we kept this thread comment free and full of juicy Christmas Thrillpower so I'll start a new thread for comments here: The Comments thread!

Right! December 1st and this year, in the spirit of Band Aid, Armand Assante and I decided to record a Charity Single. The charity is the dear old forgotten perps of Mega City One. "Forgotten?" I hear you ask? See, in the last two years, the perps haven't really had a look in in the Dredd strip thanks to the sheer number of stories featuring foreign, bent, secret and/or ridiculous invisible judges in Mega City One.

It's a problem! Hidden judges are in the walls of the halls, in a frigging cupboard in Hershey's office and there was even a whole sector of the buggers that no one had a clue about! It's insane! On top of this, the last two years have seen trouble with Sov Judges, Texas Judges, Irish Judges, Brit Cit Judges, Mechanismo Judges, Judge Cal(s), Judge Fish, SJS Judge Pin, Accountancy Judges(!) Titan Judges & Eldster Judges! Sheesh!

Armand and I felt really sorry for the poor perps of MC1 who aren't getting ANY action at the minute so all Creds raised from this single go to them. Apologies for Armand's singing, he's a little out of time on occasion, as I kept telling him, "We can't ALL have the voice of an angel..."

You'll see the video here:

"Check the Walls" https://youtu.be/ZKMXaRYQdOc

Thanks in advance to everybody who signed up to the calendar, I can't wait to see what you come up with! Film & TV / Obi Wan Kenobi film (kinda) announced.
17 August, 2017, 11:29:56 PM
Both Hollywood Reporter and Variety are reporting that an Obi Wan Kenobi standalone movie is indeed being worked on, with Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader director Stephen Daldry at the helm.

No script or cast yet (or indeed official announcement) but this is good news to me!

Film & TV / Baby Driver
08 July, 2017, 09:13:04 AM
Blimey, I went to see this last night and it was stunning! I've always enjoyed Edgar Wright's work and this was just genius! How they choreographed and edited this and (pretty much) sustained it for and hour and a half is beyond me.

If you don't know the premise, Baby is an insanely talented getaway driver who suffers from tinnitus. He constantly has music pumping through his iPod to drown out the constant ringing in his ears.  The contemporary music he listens too pretty much constantly matches, or foreshadows, what's happening onscreen. This gets right down to lyrics graffitied on the walls as he walks along the street, strong drumbeats matching insane shootouts or even placing of heist items on a table matching the rhythm of a song. It sounds like an awful recommendation, but the thing plays out like one long music video; a really clever, stylish, engaging music video. I watched some scenes with my jaw practically on the floor.

The performances by all the cast are great. There are some really nasty and funny heist members and Baby himself shows really satisfying character development. It was one of those movies that me and my friends excited discusses all the way home, each spotting or hearing different little details.

This is a cinema experience that I would very, very highly recommend.
