petemarkreplica wrote: Dead Men Walking fits the tone of much of the prog by being a bunch of arse. Art's alright though. Nit-picking point: If in the top panel on the last page, the proof comes from his own eyes, how come we can see him in the pictures?

Because not all the images come from Zykurk's eyes. The prison also has other security cameras, not to mention the images transmitted from the eyes of other prisoners.

Megazine (Volume 2) Number 7 - one of the cheapest covers ever! I spent 60p at a library near Mornington Crescent tube stations photocopying images of statuary from graveyards. Reverse it out in metallic silver ink and hey presto!

1063 is from the Autumn of 1997, the nadir of my time as Tharg, with a pair of marketing hook stories - Space Girls and A Life Less Ordinary -  dragging the prog down. The Dredd is actually very good (part 1 of Mrs Gunderson's Little Adventure by Wagner & Flint), and the SinDex is one of Dan's best (Waiting for God Knows, art by Julian Gibson). The V13 is a decent yarn too.

Yes, I adapted the screenplay for ALLO into comic scrpts and concieved the Space Girls. So the blame for those goes on mea culpa.

Can I throw in Breaker Morant? Set during the Boer War, IIRC. Cracking film.

Lots of those mentioned above (love the zig-zag  finale of Too Late the Hero!) plus...

Operation Daybreak
The Eagle Has Landed (silly but fun)
Play Dirty
Zulu

(Spot the person who's written a book about the films of Michael Caine recently.)

Help! / Re: Armitage. Why?
26 September, 2003, 01:37:05 PM
To create Armitage I took a few elements from Inspector Morse (grumpy old git investigates murders without a gun) and set them in a future Britain. I also gave Armitage a young black female partner, originally called Shanks. (Never name your characters after a toilet bowl manufacturer, otherwise they will haunt you in pub toilets everywhere.)

I then gave these very basic concepts and gave them to Dave Stone who developed everything else, creating his own vision of Brit-Cit, with its unique society, dark underbelly, class structure, etc. Sean Phillips created the look of the series, before handing it on to Charlie Adlard.

I thought the first two series of Armitage were an enjoyable change of pace from the usual style of Dredd story. But involving Armitage with Judgement Day was probably a mistake. The character was at his best solving homicides and aggravating authority figures.

Suggestions / Re: bring back dan dare !............
16 September, 2003, 07:05:23 PM
Egmont Fleetway sold all remaining rights to Dan Dare in 1999 or 2000, so to bring the character back to 2000 AD would require a licensing deal and all other sorts of hassle.

My advice - don't hold your breath.

As for the Grant Morrison/Rina Hughes Dare, an absolute cracker. IIRC correctly, the scene where the Mekon buggers our Dan was a bit more... penetrating... in the original script.

General / Re: Bishop`s other job

Floyd asked: I bought some Phantom comics during my recent visit to Australia and noticed the one was written by David Bishop. Is this the same man?

Yes. I write The Phantom for Egmont Sweden. The stories are published in various languages, with Australia's Frew Comics printing the English version. So far I have written seven issues, with several more to come.

jdmobius noted: He's also writing Dr Who books by the look of it.

I've just finished my fourth Doctor Who novel, Empire of Death, due to be published by BBC Books in March 2004.

arthurwyatt was kind enough to mention: Hes al;so the writer for B.L.A.I.R.1, The Spacegirls and Repo-Mex...

Actually, I co-created B.L.A.I.R. 1 and wrote the first two pages - Alan Grant did the rest. But all the blame should rest with me on that one.

Space Girls - again, I co-created it and then John Tomlinson did his best to make it worth reading. Mea culpa again.

Repo-Mex - another Bish-OP classic. Point the big stick of blame in my direction, if you wish.

Lobo Baggins added: You forgot 'Soul Sisters' from that list.

And how could anyone forget Soul Sisters? Co-written with Dave Stone, I'll only take a share of any blame going for that one.

Everyone also forgot The Straitjacket Fits.

King Troutchum came back with: Now then chums, lay off poor Bish-Op! At least he didn't write Witch World.

No, but I did commission it. Personally, I don't think it's as bad as some readers paint it, but my opinion is just as misguided as that of others, no doubt...

petemaskreplica added: David Bishop was the only creator at Moniaive wearing a suit. So he must be getting a reasonable wedge from somewhere...

Actually, I was the only creator wearing a suit jacket. It's about five years old and needs replacing. Perhaps in the January sales...

For anyone who cares, my other jobs include:

- just started a novel for a new imprint;
- have written four Dredd audios for Big Finish with another in early planning;
- have written a Sarah Jane Smith audio and a Doctor Who Unbound audio for Big Finish;
- the Thrill-power Overload history of 2000 AD for the Megazine (still doing the rounds of book publishers);
- the Blazing Battle Action history of Battle for the Megazine;
- a short history of Judge Death for the Extreme Edition;
- concept creation for three different computer games being published in the future;
- Starring Michael Caine, a guide to the films of Michael Caine (natch);
- and, last but not least, a nine-part series for 2000 AD under my James Stevens pen-name. Dead Men Walking starts this Autumn with great art by Boo Cook. Obviously, being in mind my track record as a script writer for 2000 AD and the Megazine, I fully expect the series to be reviled by everyone here.

And that's all the weather.

I want Bad Taste 2 Rest of the Universe O.

Just a shame Garth Ennis never got to do that Bad Taste comics adaptation in 2000 AD like he always wanted.

When I left the 2000 AD office three years ago still lurking in the files was an envelope containing all bar one of Alan Moore's scripts for Halo Jones Book 3.
