Film & TV / Re: Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silv...

Jessica Alba was very hot in Dark Angel.

Trouble is, to play the Invisible Woman they had to turn her into a blond chick. She still looks ok, but her natural dark south American look is better. Not that she should play the Invisible woman that way, as that would be out of character but anyway...

Haven't seen this film yet. I saw the first and, whilst it wasn't a favorite (a bit of a plot point at the end didn't quite work in my opinion) it wasn't too bad.

For me, my superhero faves are X-men films (the second in particular, the third least of all) and Spidey 1 and 2 (I've yet to see 3). Oh and Batman Begins was great... but a bit too long.

Hulk I just found rather boring.

"This new Dredd story is beginning to make me regret ordering the Origins graphic novel, as one day there is bound to be another edition of it which will include this latest story."

If there is a graphic novel with this latest story then then I imagine it will be in a novel of it's own rather than tacked onto a new edition of the Origins novel.  This story follows on from Origins in continuity, and it might even explore concepts and feature characters from that story,  but the main subject matter is still different. One is concerned with the origins of the 'Justice System' and destruction of the old world state, the other is about the issues surrounding mutation including the Judges, and Citizens attitude towards it. As far as I can tell anyway.

Whilst both stories will share a major thread, i.e. an exploration of the questionable morality of the Justice system etc and it's purpose of creating a better life for it's citizens through what is essentially a subjugating police state, that also runs through most of the Dredd stories anyway, as far as I can tell.

Despite what I said about the uniforms earlier, that picture is really good.

Oh and just read the two Strontium dog stories at the thrillviewer section. Not bad.

Ok...

Cover... so so. Nice detail in the scenery but Judges posture does look a bit odd... just like trying to pull his g-string out of his bum crevasse as someone already mentioned. Well, not the g-string, that's just my strange sense of humor. Also is it me, or is his head misaligned with his body?

Judge Dredd. Nice start. I'm looking forward to this. Not sure now a newborn baby would know to defend itself, but maybe the mutation gives earlier awareness too.

I'm also curious how two seemingly normal parents gave birth to a mutie baby, even if they did spend time in the cursed earth. I understand the cursed earth became a nuclear wasteland... so is it still radioactive, meaning ordinary humans can still mutate out there as opposed to being second/third generation mutants (i.e. descendants of the original irradiated people. Please bare with me, I'm a relative newbie). I just wondered, as it appears people are allowed to come and go pretty much freely with no mention of radiation treatments. Even the mutant outcasts appear to have dispensation from time to time as suggested by the note at the end.

Detonator X- It's getting better, but I agree I'd like it to finish soon. Not great.

Defoe: Not bad actually. I got a bit confused, not realizing the bit with zombie Jack was a flashback, hence a flashback within a flashback type thing. I like the zombie officer idea, but the execution of the story seems a bit clunky, what with Defoe hitting Jack then jumping straight to "I couldn't destroy him". Grim Reaper, nice idea if it looked a bit rubbish. Then again it's 17th century technology...

Greysuit- Meh. They seem to have a bit of trouble moving the story along, reiiterating in comic form what's already been mentioned in the previous issue. Do one or the other I reckon (although to be fair this makes it easier with new purchasers to catch up with the story).

Dante- I liked this one. Although it seems to me the took out the big boss a bit too early. Still, I doubt it will be as easy as that...

Thrills of the Future- So Strontium Dog is back! I've read about Johnny Alpha but I haven't actually read any of his stories yet. I was just hoping they'd get back to him, but I had an idea they'd discontinued the strip.. so I'm glad.

Is it me, or does his uniform (particularly the shoulder stuff) look kind of like the Judge uniforms (minus the eagle and detail etc...) This asymetrical thing of having a different thing on each shoulder looks a bit weird to me.

How's about:
'bumfluff' (or that might be be two words actually.)

In Red Dwarf they have 'smeg', 'gimp' 'goit' and 'gimboid'.

Prog / Defoe

It's a bit too early for me to tell yet (I wasn't that impressed by the first episode, but it is an introduction, so never mind), but I definitely like the idea of it. Zombie fighting in a period setting- nice.

I just hope the story has a, well, story. I hope it isn't just a guy shooting and slashing zombies each episode.

Dredd: I quite liked. Particularly the twisted humor. Reminded me of that Red Dwarf Episode "Back To Reality": BETRAY YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. GREAT PRIZES TO BE WON!  Anyone catch the Big Brother logo gag too?

Defoe: Didn't blow me away last week, but now I'm finding it interesting. So not all the zombies are mindless munchers then?

Detonator X: Meh. A of a slow down after it just seemed to be picking up... but I think with this pace maybe this story would work best as a graphic novel rather than a weekly snack. And why does everyone standing just a little way away have their eyes closed? (Yeah I know, it's a perspective thing, but... oh never mind.)

Nikolai Dante: A bit of Russian rumpy pumpy. That's about it really.  Except that very last panel...

Greysuit: I though he had already beaten up those guys in the last issue. They've taken a whole 3 pages to finish up? Granted quite exiting gory stuff. I love that blurry fast time machine gun scene on the second page of though. An interesting affect. Overall not bad, not great for that one.

Games / Re: ...SO THEN, AFTER THE DREDD & ...

I'd like a Strontium Dog Shooter, but a 3rd person shooter not first person.  I can see where I'm going better in a 3rd person in 1st person's I always get confused for some reason.

I loved Rogue Trooper, but I found Dredd Vs Death a bit of a pain (although it wasn't bad).

(Actually I got stuck on Rogue Trooper too. I got as far as where you have to defend a train and it seems impossible. It was fun up until then, and no doubt I'll have another bash at some point.)

I'm new to the comics so I've never read Strontium Dog, but from the blurb I've read on Johnny Alpha it sounds like a great game. As well as the cool weapons and time manipulation stuff, perhaps sidekick puzzles would be good too. You know, how in some games the main character has a special sidekick character with special abilities of their own you need to progress. Examples of such games, Evil Dead Regeneration, and Primal.  Doesn't Johnny Alpha have a little alien sidekick of some kind? I seem to remember reading about him.

I was really getting into season 3 only to have it taken away when Sky 1 left Virgin broadband.

Spoilers:

Hence I've missed a lot. Last I saw Baltar was getting up to a spot of action with a couple of Cylons ladies (mostly off-screen to be fair, they didn't milk the sex too much) and there was a mysterious virus that was killing cylons of which humans were immune. That's pretty much as far as it got.

Much as I do like this show, I think maybe finishing with Season 4 is probably a good thing. One thing I disliked about this show was it seems to take a while to move the story on.  When it does, it's interesting... (I'm particularly thinking of the catch up with the two 'dead' cylon ladies in season 2.) but it then seems to go into soap opera mode for a while. To be fair season 3 did keep me hooked though, and I hope they do conclude things satisfactorily with season 4.

Oh... and Defoe's gun is 6 barrels not 3.. I was wrong.
The name they gave for it - 'Sweeper' seems most appropriate.

"Phantasm."

Cheers that's the one. I was having one of those tip of my tongue (or is it tip of my fingers in this case?) moments. A mental block anyway.

"I bleieve it's some kind of multiple barrel affair, each one at an angle. I've seen flintlocks like that in museums but I beleive they were mostly experiments and show-pieces, it not being an idea with many practical drawbacks."

Ah yes. I didn't quite see the seperate barrels to start with, but no you mention it I wonder how I didn't notice in the first place. Maybe it's something to do with my minds interpretation (or rather misinterpretation) of the the black and white image. I don't mean that as a criticism though. I do usually prefer colour strips, but in this case and setting, monochrome seems quite fitting.

As for the multi-barrel, I love the idea to. This reminds me of a certain series of Horror films. The name skips me, (something -plasm, maybe?) but it was the one with the Tall man, the flying razor balls and the dwarf drones... Anyway one of the main characters of that film had triple, (or was it quadruple?) barrel shotgun. The films were kinda pap, but watchable, fun pap (and genuinely quite scary in places). If that makes sense.

When I first read the blurb on Defoe I thought it might be an adaption of the Abbadon novel set in London... the 2nd tomes of the dead novel. However seeing the 17th century setting, obviously not.

Horror in a period setting with a bit of sci-fi thrown in (I'm sure guns of that day couldn't do multiple shots like that ;} ), lovely.

Grey suit-For me... not bad. A bit formulaic. The main character didn't half go to town when he decided to protect the kids though didn't he? Jaw breaking, eyeball popping, neck rearanging... that seemed like way overkill, if amusing in a twisted kind of way.

Judge Dredd... I'm kind of in two minds on this. It was very amusing, which is nice considering the ultra serious strips of the past few weeks. I do wonder how real scots will take this though. Don't get me wrong, I'm not into political correction, (and I think most Scots would find it amusing.) but I did feel a bit uneasy at the same time as feeling amused. I can't help thinking that if the jokes had been about another race... it would have been considered unacceptable.

And one of the poster above was right... that creature was a haggis! A Mutant haggis! I wonder how that works since a haggis is a filled sheeps stomach? A funny idea though. It looked like one of those critters of the film, er, Critters.

Dante- ongoing good stuff. And a nob gag and a lightsabre.  By the way, does his wolverineesque healing ability also work on his bio weapons?

Defoe... not bad, but not that great either, although it's early days yet. I'm in two minds with the black and white art work. It does kind of fit the setting and mood of the story, but I think I would prefer some colour just to see more clearly what's going on. Not that I had much trouble, but I think a bit of colour in the right tones might improve things.

Detonator X- I'm actually finding this quite interesting now. Especially as it's not just a straight dinosaur vs robot story. The ideas behind the creatures are actually quite original (even if their look isn't.). And we've got a twist too... hmm. Not my favourite strip but not bad. (I thought it was only going to be 2 episodes when it started!)
