honestly as long as you preserve the aspect ratio the size doesnt matter too much.

News / Re: BARNEY updated! Props to The Cosh

Quote from: Max Headroom on 16 April, 2023, 07:28:07 PMDoes anyone know why Barney has been neglected and not updated for so long? It is, after all, an invaluable resource.

Well, Cosh sort of inherited it on a purely voluntary basis from Wake - who was maybe once paid to maintain it. So, like, it's not anyone's job. And you can imagine, if one does actually have a job - then doing another job in your spare time for no recompense is entirely up to one's own timetable.

Perhaps King Jason of Sley might be-knight someone and give them the job of maintaining Barney - but Barney is rather a fossil, as interwebby stuff goes. I love Barney, but he's a bit niche. (He doesn't really inform one about where to purchase currently available gubbins, for example.)

Blah...

I'd love an updated Barney with high resolution images, but that seems like an insane project that would be expensive and unloved.

On the other hand, an official wiki would be great (hosted here) and (since I'm doing wishful thinking) integrated with the 2000ad app.

Cam's vehicle designs/rendering have always been spot on, him and McMahon's are just incredible.

Once offered a Judge Bad to the first person who responded on twitter, someone responded, I dm'd privately "What's your surname" "McMahon"

And that's why there's a Judge McMahon who is unrelated to Mick McMahon in a dredd strip I drew.

tbh I was all in for the single adventures of Mando and Cub, and the deeper star wars lore doesn't do a great deal for me (let alone the deeper mandolorian lore)
So maybe it's a failure to meet expectations on this series (which to be fair are expectations I gave myself) also it feels like they're bored with Mando the character and that's not making it any more interesting to me.

I hate that I'm not enjoying it.

I've always assumed the H in H wagon means Hovering (and named, I presume for the US Paddy-Wagon). So any hovering justice dept vehicle, but built for collecting perps. for a few strips I decided to draw them in a literal H shape, because it amused me, and prior I designed a 3d model I could reuse, but honestly, they're one of the more mutable Dredd concepts and fun to redesign every chance you get...

Was in Paris last year and decided as well as Disney land we'd do Parc Asterix. And let me tell you: it was amazing. As a bloke in his mid 50s it was such a thrill to get a photo with Obelix. Disney does very little for me, but to wander around the indomitable gaul village and see big chief Vitalstatitix's house and much much more. Amazing. But all in French. (Though easy enough to find people who speak English, I got the impression asterix is more for the French than Disney is...)

Off Topic / Re: Biscuits

Spare a thought for your pals who have had to excise gluten from their diet, and subsequently have had to face a life time of slightly rubbish biscuits. There are *SOME* ok ones, Schar chocolate digestive for example (which looks chocolate digestive but tastes faintly of coconut) and the biscuits that turn up in Lidl, Dunnes, Tescos and Sainsburys that all have different boxes but in fact are the exact same biscuits (I favour the triple chocolate ones) that go soft once they hit the air and have suffered from so much shrinkflation, at this point they look less like chocolate biscuits and more like chocolate buttons...

Film & TV / Re: Andor To End After Season 2.

Quote from: Pyroxian on 05 March, 2023, 02:09:38 PMThe plan was always to only do 2 seasons though, with the end of the second season linking to the start of Rogue One.

Wasn't the original plan 5 seasons, ending with linkage to the movie, then following discovery of how hard making one season it was the writer decided three seasons? now this?

(actually here's the article I think I read at the time saying exactly this: https://thedirect.com/article/star-wars-disney-andor-seasons )

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

Currently reading Lovecraft Country, after picking up Lee Child's Killing Floor (on the back of the fact I sort of enjoyed the slightly goofy tv show) but in a fit of annoyance I chucked it across the floor (I'm prepared to put up with the odd coincidence, but a coincidence so screaming insane that requires the writer to hang a lantern on it and then tell you not to worry about it in the book just drove me nuts) so I turned to the other tv show I'd really enjoyed and since there's a new(? is it new, maybe I've just heard of it) sequel to Lovecraft Country, I'd thought I'd pick this up.

Not far in but a much, MUCH better book.

Prog / Re: Prog 2320 - Birthday Blitz

Quote from: Jacqusie on 22 February, 2023, 08:29:06 PMIt was a bit clunky for sure. I'm really scratching my head as to why 4 judges would kick down the door, fire all their guns at once (at what?) whilst telling the perps to put down their weapons or face erm, the Judges opening fire on their perhaps now injured or already deceased arses...

Because time in comics doesn't work the way it works in video or real life. Did they shout before they shoot? did they shout while they kicked the doors then fire as the doors hit the ground, did they shoot then shout the command? did they do them at exactly the same time?

All possible, but ultimately, sometimes, esp in a thing like this - does it look damn cool? and yes. Yes it does.

I do think we hamstring ourselves a bit as artists when we think "oh comic time means we're only allowed to do one action per frame" comics time can be a lot weirder than that if we let it...

(it's the equivalent of the freeze frame moment at the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, that shot is there to tell you what happens next is up to you...)

Creative Common / Re: Short Comic: Human (by me!)

Quote from: michaelarby on 21 February, 2023, 11:32:38 AMCheers for all the feedback guys I really appreciate it - some very good points made.

I have indeed tended towards the exposition in these short strips. I think I'm trying to cram too much info/story into too small a strip. I think thats partially a symptom of my having so little time to actually draw these days - Work keeps me so busy that I manage about half a dozen completed pages a year if I'm lucky. Thats actually why I'm trying to get into writing more, as I'm a terribly slow artist.

Id love to get this strip into print, even just a wee indie anthology. I've no idea where to start though so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Ideally, I'd love to create a couple more short strips and print my own anthology book, so I could get back into the con circuit. It's been years since I've tabled!

I did appreciate the feedback about the structure though - it hadnt occured to me that yes, we dont meet the main character til a quarter of the way through. I hadnt noticed that as a problem, but then I'm probably too close to the story and also hadnt considered the preferences of the average reader. I'll definitely bear that in mind next time.
IndigoPrime - as you say it probably could have been edited to swap pages 1 and 2 around and work better with just a slight rejig!

I was pleasantly surprised to hear praise for the colouring - I know how to do the technical side of things but my colour theory isnt the best, and its the part of the process I find most tedious too (but I'll take the praise all the same haha!)

Lettering, again not a strength of mine, I just whacked in a semi-appropriate font in photoshop! And I know well your hatred of the crossbar 'I' PJ. Absolutely would love a catch up sometime btw! Ill send you a wee message on twitter soon!

Cheers!

Looks great michael. No reason this couldn't find a home in print somewhere. (My main criticism would be the lettering, and everyone knows I'll say this: but you should avoid cross bar Is in words...). If you're about in belfast and wanna meet up for a coffee I'll happily sit and talk you through it all!

Works great on iPhone (or at least wpuld but I think the 2000ad menu bar running along the top isn't wrapping on an iPhone size so it's a little less than perfect.

I'm feeling very discombobulated...

Though it's nice to get an avatar back (this is the photo my wife took of me the day Andy Diggle said he'd give me some work at the first Dredd Con in 2000?)
