As for Jeremiah...I haven't read it. But I saw it in my shop the other day and it looked beautiful. Owner said that he got short shipped and that the North American print run was something small like 500 copies of so. So if you see it, you might want to snatch it up.

$149.99 on Amazon.com, gone everywhere I check. That's what happens when you sit on the fence!

Looking forward to Secret Service despite reading one review which was less than favourable to the story.

Was going to give Secret a miss but have come round to giving the first issue a go... and have added Adventure Time to my order for the kids?

Mine came in....

I will do up some reviews when I get a second, but I loved Hickman's Secret. A very masterfully constructed first issue. If Thief of Thieves had a quarter of the mystery and tension that the first 5 pages of this had, Spencer and Kirkman would have something.

A few thoughts about this week's haul.

New Avengers #24 by Brian Bendis and Mike Deodato

I have been disapointed by New Avengers as of late...there has been a lot of sitting around and doing nothing. But Bendis did a nice job here, with some very astute character moments. It features the Avengers watching the Cap/Cyclops battle from A Vs. X from the helicarrier, with Wolverine calling the entire confrontation before it actually happens. Also some great spreads by Mike Deodato, who should be doing Avengers books for the rest of his life.

The Secret #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Ryan Bodenheim

Hickman has been really impressing me lately. From his surprisingly good FF run to the amazing Manhattan Projects book he's doing for Image, the guy is finally living up to the potential he showed with the Nightly News. Not only does the Secret continue that trend, but in fact Hickman even ups his game here. Unlike most of his other work, there are no sci-fi trappings to hide behind here. Secret is a really well-written espionage comic, with some of the tightest dialogue and well-planned pacing I've read in a while. It's hard to go into too much detail about this without spoiling anything, but it's essentially about the secret machinations of a high profile private security firm. Hickman might be the best "surprise ending" writer in comics right now. I can't believe that we're going to get both this, and Manhattan Projects, every month. Highly recommended.

Saga #2 by Brian Vaughan and Fiona Staples

This is the second issue of Brian Vaughan's first new ongoing in a loooong time. The easy way to describe this is Romeo & Juliet set in Star Wars. Two aliens from different races have just had a baby. For various reasons, they are wanted fugitives, with every bounty hunter in the galaxy trying to mow them down. I think I liked #2 even more than #1, and Becky Cloonan draws some of the best monsters in comics. This feels like the big, epic science fiction world-building that we just don't see a lot of in North American comics right now, and the great romantic chemistry between the two leads makes this accessible to non sci-fi fans.

The Kingdom Vol. 2 TP by Dan Abnett & Richard Ellson

This is my very favourite Dan Abnett comic, and I would maybe even say that it's one of my very favourite 2000AD stories. It's got tonnes of serious action and violence, some amazing, big-picture art, and a fantastic character arc starring a really sympathetic lead. Great science fiction comic. Only problem when reading 2000AD stories in trade, is that these were originally written as serials. And so like Marvel comics used to do, there is a brief synopsis at the beginning of each 8 page segment reminding us what happened before. The problem is, that for the trade editions they've taken out the credits that are usually at the beginning of each 8 page segment. And so you get the feeling as if Abnett is repeating himself a lot, when in fact it makes perfect sense for the original format. Still, very excited to finally have these in my trade collection.

Punisher Max: Home HC by Jason Aaron & Steve Dillon

I reread this to see if it matched up with my recollections, and boy did it ever. This was one of the very best mainstream comics that I've been reading over the past few years, and that's coming from someone who doesn't give a flying frack about the Punisher, or most superhero comics in general. This was a great crime/vigilante epic with a beginning, a middle, and an end. And what an end. If the thought of buying a Punisher comic makes you throw up in your mouth...I completely understand. But this book provided some of the most effective, heartbreaking characters moments I've read from a comic with the words "Marvel" or "DC" on it in a long time. Aaron goes back and changes one very small part of Frank Castle's simple origin....but it's a change that is so absurdly simple, yet so devastating, that one can't really believe that it hasn't been thought of before.

Secret Service by Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

This is Mark Millar's latest attempt at rebranding himself as the king of mainstream comics, and so for this story he takes the unusual step of pretending to be Garth Ennis. The problem is, we already have a Garth Ennis, and he doesn't seem to be in any hurry to stop being Garth Ennis anytime soon.  Our Garth Ennis is also not a clumsy hack. What an absolute piece of garbage. I'm not trying to be mean here...this really was a poorly written comic. There are things that Millar is good at. He does big fight scenes really well. He does climactic scenes really well. And he comes up with strong, accessible premises for his stories. This, contained none of those things. It's an absolutely generic spy story featuring people we don't care about, doing things we care even less about. Like I said, this thing really had the feel of a Garth Ennis book, minus the relatable characters, or well-developed plot.

He isn't? News to me. I find Ennis and Millar cut from the same cloth and can't stand the pair of them as writers.

But that's just my opinion on the matter.

Ha! You know, I used to think that too. You know what did changed my mind? Two series - A great mini he did for Avatar called 303, and his work on Punisher Max. Really made me realize how good he is at the single issue format, and how good he is at creating great character moments....when he's not trying to be funny. That's what kills him for me. He' not funny, and never will be. The minute he takes that out of the equation, his work becomes enjoyable for me (though I've tried to get into Jennifer Blood, with no luck, so who knows).

Saucer Country #2 is a great read. The central premise of a presidential candidate who's abducted by aliens and becomes even more determined to get into the White House so she can prepare for their invasion is great stuff and building nicely.
Check out my new comic Supermom: Expecting Trouble and see how a pregnant superhero tries to deal with the fact that the baby's father is her archnemesis. Free preview pack including 12 pages of art: http://www.mediafire.com/file/57986rnlgk0itfz/Supermom_Preview_Pack.pdf/file

Ooh, I forgot to mention that. I didn't dig the first one, but thought the second issue definitely made up for it. Still a bit on the fence about the whole thing, but I feel a bit better about it then I did.

My Pulls for the week:

3 Story:  Secret Files by Matt Kindt - One of my favourite current creators in comics. This  is an addendum of sorts to a great graphic novel he did a few year back called 3 Story: The Giant Man, with the 3 stories here originally being produced for MySpace's version of Dark Horse Presents.

Dark Horse Presents #11 - So many reasons to read this, but Francisco Francavilla's pulp-noir creation The Black Beetle is probably at the top of my list.

Resident Alien #0 - New series by Peter Hogan featuring a small town doctor that solves crimes. Oh, and he happens to be an alien. Another series that originally started in DHP. Really hoping this lives up to it's potential.

Rachel Rising #7 - Small town mysteries being solved by a woman who recently came back from the dead. I've said before that I've felt like this has gone on too long, but Terry Moore recently said that he has no intention of shutting it down anytime soon.

Ragemoore #2 - Second issue of this fantastic gothic horror series. Really enjoyed the first issue.

Manhattan Projects #2 - Like I've said, Hickman is on fire these days. Loved the first issue of this. Weird, trippy science mystery, with a great twist ending.

Rocketeer Adventures 2 #2 - New Rocketeer stories by Paul Dini and Walt Simonson equals big fun.

Prophet #24 - So far this is weirdly fun as I thought it would be.

Secret History Of DB Cooper #2 - #1 might have been by favourite debut issue we've gotten this year.

Sixth Gun #21

X-Factor Vol. 13 TP - One of the very few Marvel series I still follow, albeit in trade.

This is an interesting one.  I'm not sure what issue number I'm up to myself (not 7 anyway), but I don't think your description quite does the book justice.  Last I saw, Moore appeared to be (for better or worse) working in elements from his Molly & Poo horror prose, which if so would make it something more than 'small town mysteries'.

That isn't to say I automatically approve:  Moore can be great, but sometimes he reminds me of Johnny Nice Painter  from The Fast Show ('black, BLACK, BLACK'),  showering his previously light and witty character pieces with grand guignol and ultimate evil: something I'm not sure works for me.

I wouldn't have described it like that a few issues ago, but with it looking more and more like this series is going to be even longer that Echo was, I think that's what it's devolving too. I still am enjoying what he's doing here...I just think this would have worked better if he kept it smaller.
