Cash's cover of Hurt, together with the video, is one of the most affecting things I've ever seen.

The Inappropriate Cover has long been a staple of the goth scene, and many bands have contributed to the oeuvre in style:

The usually execrable Him doing a fine cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game

The Dreadful Shadows cover Twist In My Sobriety by Tanita Tikaram

The Merry Thoughts' surprisingly effective cover of Will You by Hazel O'Connor

Rosetta Stone's version of Heaven 17's Temptation

And, of course, the Sisters of Mercy's mighty cover of Jolene by Dolly Parton

(The Sisters link is the best quality recording of that song I've ever heard, BTW.)

Cheers

Jim

I love The Sisters of Mercy and hadn't heard that version of jolene till now BUT i do however like this version

loveforstitch - Does he fall in love? I like a little romance in all my movies.

Rekaert - Yes, he demonstrates it with bullets, punches and sentencing.

He's Mega City 1's own Don Juan.

Since so many Johnny Cash songs have been mentioned but this one has been omitted I'll add his version of 'Mercy Seat' to the list. Simply stunning. The only reason I didn't include it specifically in my list is Nick Cave's original is so good as well and I like me covers to add to stuff.

Sepultura have done an amazing cover to The Prodigy song 'Firestarter' which can be found on the Kairos album. And for all you non-metal types there's a blistering cover of a Napalm Death song (Control) by Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Or if you prefer there's a cover of Soungarden's 'Rusty Cage' by Johnny Cash.

(sorry no links, my iPhone is shit!)

Cheers  :)

Hahaha nice

Surely the best cover the Sisters of Mercy did was 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme' by ABBA, but then they have a huge list of live covers from over the years. They also did 'Always look on the Bright side of life' at Reading Festival in 1991, which was just brilliant and closely followd by 'He's got he Whole World in his Hand'.

As for other covers.

Faith No Mores Version of 'Lets Lynch the Landlord' by the Dead Kennedys
Alice Donuts version of Sabbaths 'War Pigs' which is instrumental and has a fucking trombone solo in it!
Orbitals take on the Dr Who theme

Definitely, there's loads off that Kennedy's cover album that are great.

Impressed with the mention of Alice Donut too, though I prefer Helter Skelter, done the same way!
NEGOTIATION'S OVER!

There's an a cappella version of Rammstein's 'Du Hast' by the 'Viva Vox Choir' which can be found on You Tube (again sorry no link) which is worth checking out.

Virus 100 quality record, mostly. There are a few versions that are just too straight to be interesting, but some of them are really out ther. That Disposable Heros verison of California Uber Alles is also on it.

You ever see Alice Donut do it live? The drummer played trombone so the singer played drums and hence it became in instrumental version.

Others that now spring to mind include

Sepultura's version of 'The Hunt' by New Model Army
Fields of the Nephilims version of 'In Every Dream Home a Heartache' by Roxy Music, because it's insanely dark.
Mudhoney's verison of 'Revolution' by Spacemen 3

Everyone I've mentioned are all songs I think are generally better versions of the original, and the originals are all songs I like. The Hunt in particular, always kicks off at gigs when that gets played :-)

Best found on 'March to the Fuzz' which is one the best compliations you well ever buy. One disc of 'greatest hits'  and another of B-sides and oddities, including several other great covers. Orignially it was on the B-side of the 'This Gift' 12".

Goosegash

Lawnmower Deth "Kids In America" - gloriously thrashy nonsense which has possibly the most endearingly crap video of all time.

Goes well with this one - Turisas - "Ra Ra Rasputin" - a Finnish metal Bony M cover.

And finally, my favourites the Cardiacs do "Suzannah's Still Alive" by The Kinks.

not sure if this counts as a cover version or a parody
