Hi,
I'm looking to sell some original art from 2000ad. 1 Metalzoic page by Kev O'Neil, a Gibson Robo-Hunter and a MacNeil colour Dredd.
I've not sold original art before so was hoping one of you guys would be able to give me a couple of pointers about where to go, reasonable prices to expect etc...
Any help much appreciated.

There are folks who know MUCH more than me about these things but just to get the ball rolling there are a number of Facebook Groups that specialise in 2000ad art members of which I'm sure will help. My favourite is The House of Tharg Original Art Group, but if we're host the number are in 2000ad Original Comic Artwork.

There is also a more general group 'Comic original art sale trade show' and I'm sure others - but this one seems to have lots of stuff for sale.

As ever eBay is there but folks really talk it down these days. I still look regularly and buying off there is easy - selling I've not done for a long time. Finally comicartfans.org is of course your friend in all matters original art.

You probably know all this - but just in case. As for value folks will need to see the pieces of course - but just from those descriptions sounds like you have some beauts that will command good prices.

Post um here and folks might be able to help with value.

Hi Colin,
thank you. I really appreciate these pointers. I'll try to get some pictures uploaded soon.

TBH there isn't much of a market for these pieces.  You'll be lucky to get anything back on them at all.

Tell you what, I'll be generous and give you a fiver for each, and that's cutting my own throat!

;)

In all seriousness though ...

ebay seems to be more for professionals and businesses these days.  The fees are bonkers now, not just for selling stuff but for the postage too!

As with all things it depends on whether you want quick or you want a high price.  Love to see them though.

I'd definitely spend time getting a feel for what a decent price may be for these - you'll probably find some sharks in the water and receive offers a fair bit below what these pages might otherwise realise.  The first offer(s) you get may well be on the low side, people being people.  Get some ball-park figures from a few different sources if possible and avoid falling for the old 'I'll give you these magic beans' line; these sound like decent pages and if someone is really interested you'll make a fair few quid.

My finger isn't really on the original art world pulse these days but I can at least say 'no, I'd hold out for more than that / that seems like a fair offer' if you want my opinion (not that there's any reason why you should).

Hi guys,
thanks for these tips. Really useful.
Cheers.

Hi guys,
apologies for the poor quality of the pics but here's a copy of the pages.

I'm not going to pretend to know for sure but I'd say that Metalzoic is worth a pretty sum - that's a fantastic page. There's a couple of pages on Artdroids listed as £750 each - though the prices there have always been regarded as very much the top end - for a page like this though I wouldn't have thought it was too far off.

The Robohunter page - man I love this I have a page from Farewell my Billions on my wishlist - but out of my range at the moment. Again Artdroids (this is top end again I'd suggest) as a page from an earlier Sam Slade story for £650. I think the page you have is nicer, but I'm not sure if £650 is realistic? Ask around.

I'd guess the Colin MacNeill page would get less than those two - is it Chief Judge's Man? but still going to get a decent price.

Look for more advice though as I'm no expert. If you price it too high and you'll just have it sitting there. Price it too low and folks will snap you're hands off, but you'll kick yourself. Ultimately the rule I think - though I don't sell yet - is its the price you'd be willing to let it go for?

Thanks for the links and the tips, Colin.
That's really useful and really appreciated.
Cheers,

Ordinarily I would be inclined to say that Artdroids is a good example of "pie-in-the-sky-let's-see-how-long-we-can-keep-this-listed" but actually I would be inclined to say that what is being suggested is quite conservative.

That Macneil page from one of the Chief Judge Man stories might possibly be the lowest of the three.  Mind you, lots of Judges and plenty of action ...

Metalzoic is a bit of a cult classic and possibly the least well known of O'neill's work largely because of DC's failure to reprint it down through the years (although I am more than happy to be blown out of the water on that position).  It does have the advantage of including the title character and being one of the climactic scenes.

Gibson's Slade is a bit of an oddity.  Quite often pieces can hang around for a while without being picked up, particularly on 'later' stories like this one.  If it was a Verdus piece you could pretty much count on it screaming out the door at artdroid prices.  I'd have to agree with Colin.  In some respects it depends on how fast you need the money.

Don't forget as well that you need to factor in selling fees in many places.  You may well find that if you threw it open to boarders here at the prices Colin is suggesting then you will get a fairly quick sale.  The likes of ebay will get you a wider audience with the potential of higher prices but ebay will take a tidy chunk of that.  Plus it depends on what you list it at which has the risk of falling at the lower end of hopes.

Anyway, that's my tuppence ha'orth.

Seen the advice on 2000ad Original Comic Art Page and it seems the rest of the world has finally caught up with Artdroids prices!

I sent you a pm, Huey - not chasing the art, just wanted to avoid clogging up the board with my waffle.
