I don't know if this will be any good or not. I quite like other stuff he has done though (especially Firefly and Buffy), so I reckon it'll be worth a look. Familiar faces or 2 in that picture too.

Creative Common / Future Shock (etc)Submissions
05 June, 2008, 02:23:49 PM
Hi,

I read the guidelines on this site concerning submission, but there are still a couple of things I am not too clear about.

I understand a writers submission essentially involves sending in a script and 1 page synopsis, the script being read if the synopsis is liked.

However, if the writer already has an artist available already, (i.e. like 2 mates teaming up, or the writer doing the art him/herself) is it acceptable to send in the artwork with the script?  Or should that be treated as a separate application and hence sent in separately bearing in mind stories are bought from writers, but artists are employed?

Concerning artist submissions- I understand they tend to be based around essentially sending in a few pages of pencils (and/or inked work) based on 2000 AD characters, the artists own interpretation of one of the scripts available. I was wondering if a future shock would also qualify for this too since the characters are original.

Apologies if there is a specific thread for this. I did do a search but nothing came up.

Film & TV / Tin Man

It's on tonight on the Sci-fi channel at 10.

For those who don't know, it's like a modern retelling of the Wizard of Oz. It's rather darker though, so not a kids' show.

Could be complete pap of course, but I'm intrigued.

Prog / Prog 1582: YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE!
12 April, 2008, 09:23:49 PM
My prog came today. That's rare for me, it usually comes Monday.. (and to be honest I kind of wish it had as it gives me something to look forward too... but it was a nice surprise nonetheless.)

I know this is in the spoiler section, but as it's early I'll use spoiler tags...

Cover:  Quite interesting and dynamic. Very different kind of art to the PJ Holden/Eva De La Cruz stuff in the strip. Kolnikov looks more ragged on the Nick Percival cover.., although the perspective of his gun and left arm doesn't look quite right to me, as if the gun is off centre in relation to the hand. Very detailed though.

Thrills of the Future: Strontium Dog: Blood Money.
2 interesting looking characters in that picture. Johnny looks younger (makes me wonder if this is a back-flash) and I think the one on a left is a woman but not... too...sure.

Judge Dredd:  Very interesting new start to a new strip.  Nice art. Without spoiling much, some villain threads have already been established.. and looks like they're going to be tied in a claustrophobic way. Too early to tell yet though.  Interesting macabre characters (ugly characters drawn beautifully).

Savage: Simple but ok. Getting a bit repetitive though but I wasn't bored with it. Can't help thinking though that if I, a relative newcomer find it repetitive, something new should be thrown in though. Curious what the old stories were like.

Dead Eyes: A gradual but interesting continuation.

Ten Seconders:  Ok. Gets a bit confusing with jumping around between threads, but some interesting stuff still. Those guys who found the artifact... was that at the ruins of the destroyed ship thing a couple of weeks back?  Saucy new/old character too...

Dead Signal: Nice actiony continuation, and a amusing gag or two too. I love the colourful slightly toony art too.

All in all a good one I think.

Film & TV / New Dredd Film Greenlit!
01 April, 2008, 04:38:29 PM
I just got this:

Universal Studios have announced their backing for a forthcoming Judge Dredd movie which will be in production next year. It will not be a sequel to the Stallone film, but will be a complete re-imagining.

Much of the project is currently under wraps, but an inside source stated the following:

"The script will make efforts to incorporate elements made in classic stories written by Wagner but will not be bound strictly to them as we have no wish to limit the medium.  We can disclose that Walter the Wobot will be a major character, reproduced completely in CGI and voiced by Andy Serkis.  He will be the viewers main introduction into that world, much as the droids provided that role in the Star Wars movies."

When asked who will be filling the helmet and boots of the big man himself the reply was:
"This isn't definite at the moment but Tom Cruise seems interested in the role. We hope he can come on board as we feel he has just the right facial profile and ironic humor to fit the role. Of course some measures will need to be taken to enable the diminutive actor fulfill the right dimensions, but we are confident that with modern computer technology and the installation of thick padding in the boots we can pull it off."

Fans will also be pleased to know that whoever plays the role will be contractually obliged to wear the helmet through an entire 10% of the film.

Rumors of a musical number performed by judges at the start of the film led by the big man himself  twirling his daystick were met with reticence by our source.

"We're not obliged to say, but with Disney and George Lucasfilms providing some creative input, we are confident the fans will not be disappointed."

Happy April fools day everyone (although I doubt I had anyone going... at least not for long.)

Prog / Prog 1580: The Mark of Kane
31 March, 2008, 01:44:03 PM
Bagsy! And first time in a while. Last time I did this I found out someone had posted started the thread in the Review section already, but that's apparently vanished now anyway.

Cover:  Great cover. Cool new character. Strange how all the retro like wood stock on that gun somehow works with the rest of the characters design...

Dredd-  Very nice continuation. And I think the art works well. Wonder if they'll have a Judge mutie division at some point?

Savage: Ok. I find this strip a little hard to follow for some reason but it's quite interesting. Also get to see more of that Volgan evilness.

Dead Eyes:  Brrr. Ok i'm understanding the story a bit more now. I found it a bit confusing that the psychic soldier could see things, and the other guy could to. It was like... so how is he special. At least it's made clearer this issue, whilst raising new questions. Nice splash page, and another perverted homicidal politician. Ok.

10 Seconders: Again things are made a bit clearer this issue. Cool new character too. Interesting design to that Lense character too. Sure he was introduced last episode, but that wasn't brought up.  I.e. not just another colourful naked humanoid. Seems to have a bit of a green lantern power thing going on. (Design reminds me of some of the stuff we see in Lexx for some reason? That hood, see what I mean?)

Dante- Well that was a short story, but a nice finale. Won't have to wait too long for the next one either, so fair enough. Not totally sure what the villain's (Orkady?) new face is supposed to be but anyhow.

Anyway... hoping noone went and bagsied the thread while I was busy typing this...

Film & TV / Dredd in a Dwarfy video
25 March, 2008, 12:46:15 AM
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk578M4pts4">This is the video of Danny John Jules version of toungue tied (the music number that was done in a dream sequence at the end of Red Dwarf series 2. Personally I preferred the original. It was cheesy but amusing and fun for all that, whilst I find this soulful version really wince worthy. (Sexy cat lady though, and lots of Dwarfy faces.)

Look out for Judge Dredd. And prepare to wince further. (If you can't stand to watch through the whole thing he appears near the end.)

Prog / Prog 1448 - Hanging in the Balance
30 July, 2007, 02:33:01 PM
Ok, I haven't seen a thread for the latest yet... definitely not in the SPOILERS section... but what the betting now I've posted this there's another hidden away somewhere?

Anyway,

Cover- Very nice.  Samantha's face so matches the new artist's style I wondered if it was the same person but apparently not as this was done by Dylan Teague. Is it me or does she look a bit like Victoria Beckham? But more buffed of course. (Note I am not Posh Spice fan! But there faces do look similar with those big eyes and nubbin noses...)

Judge Dredd- Nice little finale to this story. Beeny definitely has a major role in this one (and a nice bottom but never mind that.) I think I'd like to see that theatre performance... and is the camp hiding something? Of course they are... but it wasn't quite what I expected which is a good thing.

Interesting Line by Dredd at the end too. After taking the moral high ground these last couple of stories here  he is comeing out with something rather pessimistic and, well, hard.  He's changed.. but not that much. Good stuff.

The 86ers. I love the art in this. Nice episode. Seems that Nort captain has rather a history of treachery... Much as I found myself rather against the Southers prejudism of the Norts in the earlier episodes (morally against I mean, not against it as part of the story) it seems these guys really are untrustworthy.

Greysuit- Coming along well. Nice art, nice action. Don't try that bleach thing at home boys and girls. "Had a bit of a part sir?"

Robohunter- Silly but comical. I loved those two big robots in the bottom panel of the second page by the way. The fact they turned out to be a bit rubbish makes them kind of adds to the humor.

Defoe- More action packed nonsense... but interesting nonetheless. This strip feels a bit of a mess in terms of plot but a nice character moment between Defoe and Jack-o-bite in this episode. Quite disturbing too after the humor of the last episode. Not that that's a bad thing.

All in all, good I thought.

Prog / Prog 1545 - City of the Living Dead
09 July, 2007, 02:11:43 PM
Hope it's ok if I start a thread on this. Someone will at some point anyway...

Anywhoo-

Cover- Another zombie scene, but what gorgeously hideous art. Or is it hideously gorgeous?  Point is, the subject matter is hideous but the art and detail is pretty amazing. Even check out the fine hairs on the zombies arms....

Judge Dredd- The hearing at last and the turn up of the relatives. Nice continuation of he story, if a tad predictable, but I don't think it could have realistically gone any other way. Predictable, isn't necessarily bad..

Robo- Hunter - She's back! This is the second Robo-hunter story I've read, and I quite enjoyed the last one. It was nice to have a bit of lighter humour in an otherwise dark comic. Not a criticism, dark is interesting but it's nice to have a bit of light relief once in a while (oo-er).

So now she's a jailbird in and there's a fight and even wet T-shirt bit! Good stuff. (Is it me or do all the females in Ian Gibson's art look very pouty? Not that there's anything wrong with that... They do have a tendency to look like sister though in facial features.

Greysuit- Meh. The story plods on. I'm a bit confused about the Zil character. He is another agent we haven't seen yet right? Another one who went a bit 'quirky'? Just seeing those black captions out of nowhere in panels of the main character (who appears to be of Engish origin from his main story) made me wonder. To be fair it is getting interesting but as I said it progresses rather slowly...

The 86ers- Still early days yet but I'm liking this one. The space fighters have a bit of an X-Wing (without the X)/ Viper (that's Battlestar Galacticca) look to em.. but they still look good. Nice progression. Interesting to see the southers aren't necesarily the all-round 'good guys'. That might have always been the case, but I'm new to this story. (I seem to remember the Southers betrayed Rogue's platoon too didn't they?)

Defoe- Definitely the best of the Mills scripts. Again a bit slow going, although it's more easily disguised since every episode is full of action. It's fun reading though, and that whole angel/alchemy thing is intriguing... Anyone thinking these guys indirectly caused the very plague their fighting against (by accident of course)? A kind of 17th century cover up?

All in all a good issue I think.
