A slow start but another truly phenomenal month - ! You chaps took on Jon's task with aplomb and the voting was intense as Jon and Jon were neck-and-neck right until the finish... Remember you can find out about those behind the pictures and more over on the comp facebook page --> https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp

THARG'S CHOICE goes to Hoagy's Land of the Young!

DROID'S CHOICE

This month's droid is the legendary supersquirrel himself - King CARLOS EZQUERRA:

QuoteVery difficult to choose between such a good pics, all of them are fantastic, pushing myself maybe I'll choose "Jon, The Great Hall of Justice" very impressive and personal view of it.
"Dracula1 , Woodland"  there is an air of mystery on those woods, disturbing.

and "Mimimeke, Cursed Earth", a very nice illustration

Also a big congrats to everyone who took part, another stellar month of artwork!

Massive thanks to CrazyFoxMachine as always for putting in the hard work to make this competition possible.

Lastly a thank you to those who voted for my entry and/or had kind words to say about my piece.

Looking forward to April's comp.  :D

Wow, thanks once again. As there are so few chances on life to go out on a high, I think I'll grab this one. I'm sure at least a few of you will be glad to know I won't be entering any more of these. It'll be quite difficult, you know, like with that bloody itch, but I need to prove a point to myself.

I've been doing these sporadically for a couple of years or so now, I think, and really enjoyed 'em. On at least one occasion I got bollocked at work (when I used to go somewhere else to work) for doodling something for this rather than for them.

By way of a lap of honour, all the pieces that I could find or remember doing are gathered here;
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.585435111545591.1073741836.105679529521154&type=3 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.585435111545591.1073741836.105679529521154&type=3) should anyone fancy a look, or perhaps a trip down Memory Lane. I especially enjoyed the "Olympics" and "Dredd after the Movie" pieces done in collaboration with the Emperor where he would reel off several pages and I'd stupidly agree to it (though not always complete it). Did anyone ever find out where he went? I miss him.

Anyway, thanks and kudos to Owen for working tirelessly at this thing. Everyone give him cider when you see him, I understand he likes that kind of thing.

Good luck for April! Looking forward to seeing your mighty works.

X

Awesome job guys and thanks again to CFM for running these and the FB page.

The callout from Carlos is making me giddy.

Just curious where you work, Jon? we both work in the same industry it seems.

Excellent comp and worthy winners. I was surpised to get the few nominations that I did with the quality of work that surouned me.
Anyway loving the new subject especially as it means that I can simply re-post last months entry of the undercity and save a bucket load of time!! ;)

The first one I've entered and followed and it was great fun. Imaginative and beautiful work all round and the icing on the cake for me was Carlos's summary at the end :)

I'm freelance these days, but I did work exclusively in the UK games industry ( Gremlin, Argonaut a whole looooong time at a place called Zoe Mode and a handful of other places). At the moment I seem to be mostly designing theme parks, though I'm not really sure how that happened.

Where are you?

I work at EA now, I used to work at Gazillion (they make Marvel Heroes) and before that in the movie/commercial industry.  Theme parks sound fun, I worked on the Simpsons motion ride video a while ago at Universal  :)

Oddly - so far - it's every bit as shambolic as the games industry. But I'm not on anything like the level of Universal. :)

Do you have an online portfolio? I really like the painted work I've seen so far.

Well done winners and all participants. Jon does it again but please don't deprive us and bow out now, you're an inspiration. Nice to see my top 3 and HM all made the winning votes and decisions. Thanks again Owen.

Ha ha, thanks. I'll presume that's humorous given we're on a forum based on weekly and monthly deliveries of inspiration far beyond my ability to match (and I have rejection letters to prove it). :)

And You should never have split your votes. ;)

Interestingly I noticed one of your comments on FB about not getting much in the way of feedback on here. I tend not to as I find people on the whole don't want to hear anything approaching criticism, constructive or otherwise; my one foray seemed to cause the other party to apparently sulk and claim that all art was purely subjective, and couldn't be judged in objective terms. BUT!......might be fun to have a thread for that sort of thing?
Title: Re: MARCH ART COMP - RESULTS THREAD
Post by: Neil McClements on 03 April, 2014, 10:42:01 AM
I'll never get that split your vote thing. You vote for the artwork and not the individual so it doesn't matter in my view.

Oddly for me inspiration comes in part form knowing the artist (obviously in only a virtual sense) and seeing their art progress over time. My biggest artistic influence are two fellas I know who aren't comic artists but have constantly inspired me more than any established artists, I'll leave you to guess! I'm betting I'm not the only one who'd say that and I'm sure some folk only ever see your artwork here in the comp.

It hasn't been updated in ages unfortunately, and most of my recent art can't be posted yet I'm afraid til our game ships :(  And of course my free time is just spent painting Dredd fanart now, it's a sickness.

I think you should keep entering, but that's just me :)

As far as constructive crits here, I think the competition is just for fun anyways.  A lot of people aren't used to having crits or even having painted very much and will take it pretty poorly.  The creative commons is probably a better place for that.

Oh, it wasn't a criticism on here. Somebody asking for feedback on some art elsewhere. Though by "feedback" I think they meant "praise". I did mean establishing a new thread on Creative Commons.

I'd find it useful to get more brutal feedback. I mean I get it day to day anyway, but the attraction of this forum is that it's based around one of the three major inspirations that I consider lead me into attempting art - broadly speaking - as a career. As a target market, or some less awful term, it'd be good to know what people really think. :)

I for one would welcome some constructive criticism, negative or not, as I feel all would help me develop as an artist. I am slowly getting back into art after a very long break and have embraced the digital medium. I am on a learning curve of both how to use the software and also how to draw again!
A thread in Creative Common where perhaps we could repost our entries plus anything else is  that requires appraisal is I think a great idea!
Where do I sign up!!  :P ;)

Also, being chosen by Charlie the Squirrel must be quite a buzz!

Justice was done. Very happy for winners, all well well deserved.

Don't go Jon!
And don't resist the April comp Mimikeke!

Also, I'm well up for some sort of crit thread. I'm doing this to challenge myself and improve my drawing.
I know I don't understand light or perspective yet so frankly any criticism or tips from the talent on here would be pure spanking gold.

Not sure what i could contribute back though...

Judged on the quality of the art alone, surely! I agonised* between your wonderful piece and mimikeke's for some time, and ultimately came down on the latter because it was doing something really well that I try to do myself. I think a lot of choices come down to that sort of decision and similar split hairs.

Can't wait to see what you do with your own theme choice! :D

*That was perhaps a trifle over-dramatic. I certainly gave it some thought...

As anyone posting here would guess, we (aka the Rothwells)are over the thruppin over the moon to have garnered the Mighty One's approval. Wonderful news. The piece itself was made as we went through a continuing stressful March mainly. So good, we can now have fonder memories of times marred (by financial needs eclipsing our day to day).

Thank you all you lovely people who voted for and added me to that special realm in your lives that enjoys others' art, efforts at illustration, and ascribes to the subtle encouragement of them. Long may you all enjoy these faculties.

As for Jon, I have to say I too have been examining(stealing) ideas and methods from him along with many others [Archie  ;)] here. His work ethic and ideas are boundless forms of inspiration. May I say Jon, your inking style (2000AD characters vs Zombies in part.) reminds me of Joe Colquoun of Charlie's War fame. I love that guy!

Everyone who took part. It is a thrippin bull run in this competition. Not only are the masters watching each month but the talent alongside you is enormous and getting hotter by the week. These are some dedicated scrawlers.

Landscapes is a top theme with endless dimensions in 2000ad. I'm hoping it comes around again in the next year. As JBChrist says I'm country and independent artist. Countryside is my bread and butter. And the piece gave me therapy too.

Much love and respect to the father of the comp, Owen. He is a transdimensional wizard that man.

Cheers and cheesy grins again.

Congratulations to this months winners. I have been very remiss and missed the vote but my choices were reflected in the final outcome. It'll be a shame to lose Jon from the competition but I understand wanting to go out on a high.

I'd second Jon's idea for a crit section where people could post their art for others comments and suggestions. Personally I enjoy getting feedback and prefer people to pick the faults rather than praise the piece as it isn't always obvious what needs work until you take a step back and re-visit. I found the feedback to my first stab at a 2000AD script on this site invaluable and I'll be having another attempt when time allows.

Keep up the good work CFM.

Yet another superb competition crammed full of excellent pieces.
Well done to Jon for his wonderful entry and also well done to Jon for his wonderful entry... Is there an echo in here?  :D
The art comp is one of the highlights of my month, weather I enter or not. It is always a thrill to see everybody's work and interpretation of the theme. All the entries (again) this month were fantastic, with many different styles and qualities making the process of choosing a winner incredibly difficult.
A big thanks to all those on the forum who took the time to vote, especially if you voted for me  ;)
And, once again, a "Hurrah!" for that jolly nice chap CrazyFoxMachine for all his efforts in bringing us all this slice of joy.
