Title: THE 2000AD MESSAGEBOARD ADVENT CALENDAR 2013!
Post by: Pete Wells on 30 November, 2013, 11:19:53 PM
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thrills in every store! Oooooooh, it's here, the highlight of the year, welcome to the FIFTH 2000AD advent calendar!!!

Last year, we kept this thread comment free and full of juicy Thrillpower so I'll start a new thread for comments here: http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,39691.0.html (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,39691.0.html)

Right! December 1st and I have TWO treats(?) in store for you! The first is my annual shitey film with horrible singing, this year I've chosen to do my take on "Winter Wonderland." This takes place in Pete Wells Block on Chaos Day and you'll find it here - apologies in advance...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznCjhK18kQ&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznCjhK18kQ&feature=youtu.be)

Secondly, my equally terrible attempt at a comic strip. Please enjoy the sequal to last year's Oor Burdis (with apologies to Dudley D Watkins...)

(http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/334/b/2/oor_burdis_2_by_wellsybeer-d6w90cp.jpg)

Thanks to everybody who signed up to the calendar, I can't wait to see what you come up with! Also, a massive thanks to all the folks who've contributed to the board this year, you all make my day! Real life means I can't get on as often as I'd like but I do try and get on at least once a day.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GRUD BLESS US EVERYONE!

Oh, and if you want to see last year's advent calendar, it's here: http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,37527.0.html (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,37527.0.html)

Also, here's by back catalogue of shite 2000AD Christmas films - dire!

2012 - "Death's Nuts Roasting on an Angry Fire": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdwo0OWfVe8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdwo0OWfVe8)
2011 - "Christmas Alphabet": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPGGyeVXwGU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPGGyeVXwGU)

My apologies for yet another Dudley D. Watkins 'tribute'.  My rendition was inspired by a drunken chinwag with Bluemeanie about the difficulties of writing in Scottish dialect.  After decades of living away from Scotland, I'm not sure if I can do it anymore!

As usual, my girls wanted a piece of the action too.  As such, I present to you 'Judge Scholarship' from my 10 year old, and my 8 year old's piece, simply titled 'DREDD!!!'

I hope you enjoy them!

A rather confused Mrs Gunderson at Christmas. A very merry Christmas to all the Writers, artists and staff that make 20000AD the galaxys greatest and of course to all my fellow forum members, that make this place what it is.

My main thing will be up on the 15th along with Super Surfer's, but here's something seasonal to keep us going for today.

The Eagle
Inspired by Poe (not the Tellytubby, the other one)

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a thick and heavy volume of Mega-City law
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my con-apt door.
'It is some visitor,' I muttered, 'tapping at my con-apt door
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And my Luxi-heating fender cast its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From the books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels called Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of the synthi-curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
'It is some visitor entreating entrance at my con-apt door
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my con-apt door;
This it is, and nothing more.'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
'Citizen' said I, 'truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my con-apt door,
That I was not sure I heard you.'
Here I opened wide the door;
Darkness there,
and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only thing there spoken was the whispered words, 'The Law?'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back again, 'The Law!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
'Surely,' said I, 'surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what there at is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there flew a stately eagle of the cursed days before.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
Just flew up and perched beside my bedroom door -
Perched upon the Justice hotline just beside my bedroom door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
'Though you look forlorn and fearful, you,' I said, 'are sure not legal.
Ghastly grim and ancient eagle wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy drokking name is on this night's dystopian shore!'
Quoth the eagle 'You broke the law.'

Much I panicked at this ungainly bird to hear it speak so plainly,
For its answer cut me to the core;
I had not told a single living human being,
Never breathed a whisper or a rumour
Yet this bird that sat beside my bedroom door,
Knew, it knew, that I had broke the law.

And that eagle sitting lonely on the intercom, spoke only,
Those words, as if his soul in those four words he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered 'Other birds have flown before -
In the morning he will leave me, as my fears have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `You broke the law.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
'I get it,' said I, 'what it says is its only stock and store,
Overhead from some Judge, or its circus master
It just learned that phrase, it knows nothing of the law.
No one knows what I did, no one heard, no one saw.
It can't know anything of my fatal flaw.

But the eagle still and staring made my soul feel like baring
So I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bedroom door;
Then, on the faux-velvet sinking, I took myself to thinking
Fancifully thinking what this ominous bird before -
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking 'You broke the law.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the bird whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat thinking, while my soul continued sinking.
How could this thing know of my breaking from the law,
How could it know what I had done to that sweet Lenore?
Who shall breathe air, nevermore!

Then, I thought, the air grew grotty, smelling like a ten day hottie,
Or some pleasure district whore who'd been busted by the law.
'Stomm,' I cried, 'what is that smell, what did you let free?
Stop it, stop it! You won't catch me. I know all about your law!
They will not come to arrest me, they'll never find the lost Lenore.
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law!'

'Drokk it!' said I, 'thing of evil! - shut your beak, you bird or devil! -
Whatever monster lent you, whatever villain sent you to my door,
Go back to their department, you will not get your entrapment
In my home I stand undaunted, I have found your flaw
So what do you say to that, foul feathered creature?'
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law.'

'Eagle!' said I, 'thing of evil! - shut your bill you bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that Grud we both ignore
I did not do it, I did not kill her, I did not take her down to Re-Syk.
With her body heavily laden, I did not stagger through that door.
I never knew her, never knew anyone called Lenore.
You cannot prove I ever laid eyes upon a lady called Lenore.'
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law.'

'Be those words our final parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting
But then there came a sudden knocking upon my door
Opening up I saw a figure, tall and clad in all the trappings of the law.
'Greetings, citizen,' he spoke as he stepped onto my floor.
'A little birdie told me you just confessed to murder and much more.'
Quoth the Judge, 'I am the Law.'

And now I'm sitting, endlessly just siting
In the darkest, deepest iso-dungeon of this Mega-City's law
And my eyes are always streaming, as I sit here dreaming,
As the lamp-light seems to cast her shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

Once again, for this years Advent Calender, I decided to give the gift of Thrill-Power. Like previous years, I have tried to spread the word of 2000ad, so for the past month I have been gift wrapping progs and leaving them at several locations around Ireland. I also included a note inside wishing them a "Happy Christmas from the 2000ad forum".

As an added bonus, I have also a Sláine print and prog 1861 signed by Pat Mills (slightly smudged) for one lucky forum member. Just pm me your name before Monday the 23rd, if you want to be included, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday the 24th. Good luck.

HAPPY MCMAHON MONDAY!! - part 1

As some of you will remember, a number of concept images were posted on here a while ago from the Mike McMahon's http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2012/08/23/very-early-concept-work/ (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2012/08/23/very-early-concept-work/) for Animation City. These were crying out to be inked and Ming was kind enough to ask Mike if I could ink these up. I've added a bit of colour to them too.

Another brilliant, brilliant year for the calendar with amazing songs, poems, pictures, comic strips and one duff film - Grud bless us, everyone! Thanks to everyone who has contributed this year, either to the calendar itself or by leaving lovely messages in the comments thread. You all deserve KTTs!

As today is Christmas Eve (yahooooooo!) it's over to the Pro's contributions as well as a free for all for anyone who wishes to post. As normal, I've been spamming the droids, asking them to contribute (essentially asking them to work for nowt in the spirit of Christmas) and once again have been stunned by their generosity.

Over to the pro's, hold onto your kneepads folks, there's some AMAZING work on show here...

I'll go in the order in which they were received, starting with Damnation Station's Mark Harrison who provided this beautiful Durham Red...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/redXmas2.jpg)

Next, Nick Percival (who is currently working on a very exciting Judge Dredd project) sent this belter...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/DREDD_XMAS.jpg)

Design-bot supremo Pye Parr (PYE-01 to his erm... friends) sent this Chrishummy Mongrol painting...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/mongrolfinal.jpg)

Thanks to the mother of my millions of bairns, Stacey Whittle, who managed to snag us this stunning painting from comics royalty John Higgins and Sally Hurst - wow!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/Christmas2013Anderson-ForAdventCalender-LocoMotiveStudiosV2.jpg)

Next up, the most handsome man in comics, Mr PJ Holden, sent not one but two glorious images. The first is his abandoned inks for a brilliant festive Dredd...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/dredd-christmas-2013-abandoned.jpg)

Followed by this fully inked drokker - Santa Attacks!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/dredd-christmas-2013.jpg)

Next, the gentleman that is Simon Fraser sent this little lovely:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/Happy-Holiday-2013-SimonFraser.jpg)

A very Tharglexic Colin MacNeil sent this lovely card - it took THREE attempts as he managed to spell Thargmas and Scrotnig wrong, silly boy! Looks like Michael Gove is right about state of the education system...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/CM-2000adxmas2013-b.jpg)

Next Zenith's Dad Steve Yeowell sent this rather sexy Robot Archie under the Mistletoe:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/ArchieInks.jpg)

Next out of Santa's sack is dirty boy Ben Willsher who found an unused, retro villain Bio from an old Dredd Annual. Rumour has it that Fleetway management pulled this image because of the pubes...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/Quincycalender.jpg)

Hot on Ben's heels was the glorious Jon Davis-Hunt with this jaw-dropping festive Nemesis painting, BOOOM!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/MerryNemesismas.jpg)

And finally for now, member of this parish Mr Alex Ronald sent this unbelievably excellent Dredd. Words fail me!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/DreddfulChristmasE800.jpg)

Phew! Hopefully there will be more to come as the day goes on. Thanks again to all who have contributed and to the Pro's who have so kindly given their time.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Aaaand it wouldn't be Christmas wothout a festive song from Al Ewing, who has sent this beautiful, yet hilarious Dredd tale set to the tune of 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' (if you're unsure then a) you're a heathen and b) can see the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7SX3r59sc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7SX3r59sc))

All together now...

Oh Dredd, the judge of all the Meg
Forgive my foolish crime.
I stole that man's prosthetic leg
But take my bribe, I humbly beg,
And walk away this time,
I'd rather not do time.

In simple trust I hope you hear
My plea to buy you off
But you've ignored my earnest tear
And added on another year
Was five years not enough?
I thought it was enough.

My bribe has failed and I must flee
Before you send me down
I turn to run but instantly
You've drawn your gun and shot my knee
With no change to your frown –
That grim and stony frown.

You smash your fist into my jaw
'Til all my strivings cease
Then haul me off, but not before
Proclaiming that you are the law
For the millionth time at least –
At very, very least.

Now here I am on Christmas Day
I'm breathing through a tube
A broken wreck in the med-bay
Waiting to be taken away
To my small iso-cube...
My still, small iso-cube.

Brilliant! Thanks Al!

My 3D printed 2000AD tree decorations!

Merry Christmas to everyone on the worlds greatest forum.

See below for the boring technical details.

Here's a winter tale for the festive period;

THE FAIRY TALE OF A MEGA CITY ONE.

She had waited for him.

Snowflakes drifted between the blocks to fall to the hushed streets. It was Christmas Eve and Josef Sorrow stepped out of the iso - cubes after eighteen years and found that he had not been forgotten. Velma had not aged a day. She stood in the snow, wrapped up in the faux fur coat he had given her years ago. They embraced. Their lips pressed together. Sorrow would have given everything just to spend the rest of his days locked in that moment. Emotions stirred within him and those grey eyes that had seen so much suffering, so much bloodshed began to tear.

'Hi Honey.' She purred in his ear.

Headlights cut through the dark. The Law watched them from across the street. Sorrow recognised the senior judge.

'You lied to me Dredd.' He shouted. 'You said she wouldn't be here. I told you I didn't do those things. I've never hurt anyone in my life but you didn't believe me.'

'Move along Sorrow.' Synthi-leather creaked as Dredd leaned back on his Lawmaster. 'Before I put you back in there for loitering.'

'Come on.' Velma took his arm. 'Let' s go dancing.'

'Where?'

'How about Udgie's Place?' A smile appeared beneath the sweep of blonde hair. 'They still serve those crazy Blue Pearls you like so much.'

Udgie's. His breathing quickened. Sweat rose on his skin. Images, sounds and sensations tripped through his mind like tumbling cards. He remembered smoke, the beat of the music, that guy laughing. Velma had danced all night but not with him. Lightning flashed. Recoil bucking in his hands. Revellers hung lifeless in the sway of a Boogie Air anti-grav unit. Then the sea. Dark and spoiled, it swallowed them all.

'No, I don't want to go there.'

'We can just take a walk.' Her breath became vapour in the freezing night air.

'Yeah.' Sorrow kissed her again. 'I love you Velma Thane.'

'Do you think he'll take us to where he dumped the bodies?'

Psi Judge Fox never took his eyes from the street before them. It had taken years of training to be able to pierce a broken mind and manipulate it like a puzzle box. He persuaded nerve-endings and coaxed receptors into believing what was there and what was not.

'He will if you do your job.' Dredd kicked his Lawmaster into life.

'Just keep him in sight.'

Fox switched his bike to automatic, allowing him to focus on the task at hand. Sorrow made his way through the streets, his laughter echoing about the blocks towering above him. The judges waited a moment before slowly moving off to follow the single trail of footsteps in the snow.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Zippo Creed clan!

(This just came to me)

*To the tune of 'Once in Royal David's City'*

Once in dear old Mega-city
Drove a perp along the sked
He drove fast and he drove quickly
Joseph Dredd was on his tail
Brightly shone Hi-Ex that night
'Course we know who stopped his flight
Hark at metal explo-ding!
That's what creeps get for litter-ing.

Splundig Grudmas to all Squaxx everywhere!
