Honestly, it's anyone's guess. If the writer puts it in the script, then either the artist or the letterer will usually make sure it ends up on the page. However, artists who like doing SFX may well add their own, or completely change the scripted effect.

Letterers will generally just letter the sound effect per the script. Sometimes, I will edit SFX from the scripted version — writers will often script BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM because it takes up a lot of space in the script. I take that to mean that they want a big 'boom'. If I don't have a lot of horizontal space then I can make BOOOM a lot bigger than BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

On top of that, the artist will sometimes draw something other than what's in the script. If I've got a KRAKK in the script from a jaw-breaking punch but the artist has given me someone's fist going right through a person's head, then I'm lettering a SKPLUTCH. :)

Sorry, been away from the board for a couple of days.  But wow. What can I say? That's incredibly kind of you and you're an absolute star.  I'll PM you tomorrow.

You spend a weekend cavorting with young witches and you forget who your real friends are?
Just remember: that when the ecstatic music dies down, the sun comes up, and the drugs wear off, the pretty young things are going to put their tops back on and forget about you.
But we'll still be here for you – a cohort of middle-aged men with earnest opinions about old comics.
Now be honest: which would you rather?
Why can't everybody just, y'know, be friends and everything? ... and uh ... And love each other!

JayzusB.Christ

I'll level with you - I got food poisoning at the start of the weekend and spent very little time cavorting.  I'll spare you the details but I'm still not feeling right.  Ah well, there's always next May.

Thanks.  Really gutted I couldn't enjoy it properly but at least I got to watch the show and play a small part in it. Roll on next May.

No need to dismay there's another bank holiday in 3 weeks

True - and the whole point of the celebration was to usher in the summer, which has now begun.

Back on point, that Brendan McCarthy Brit Cit cover is great.  I'd forgotten he'd invented the look of the Brit Cit judge, but it's lovely to see him throw in Armitage, which for me was the strip that epitomised the look and atmosphere of Brit Cit itself

I like how it gets more insane the further away from the front cover you get:

If there were awards for sound effects, then it might win with its ZAPPO, FLUTCH, KA-SPLUTCH, THONK, FAP, FLUTCH, FLUTCH, SKREEEEEE, PONK, FOK, KRRAAKK, CREEEEE! (Are sound effects always scripted, or done by the artist, or done by the letterer? It's probably a mixture, right?)

The sound effects in Soul Sisters were all scripted, most probably by Dave Stone. He writes some of the best SFX in comics, imho.

23 - Hi-Octane

Dredd plus Lawmaster equals DAKKA DAKKA VROOM VROOM...

Judge Dredd Mega-Special #5 (1992; Sean Phillips) - rather than use the onboard armament, Dredd's just using the bike to get him close enough to day-stick the punks. To be honest, this looks a bit like he's mown down some fashion victims from Miami. Loud shirt - three months, creep! This cover was special because the grey bits are actually metallic silver.

---

Hit the Sked (prog 1815; 2013; Darren Douglas) - again, has the slight appearance of Dredd just going on an extra-judicial rampage during a frustrating commute. His pose on the bike is a little uncanny valley, but points for having someone's teeth being ground out on the skedway.

---

Crash Course I (prog 1957; 2015; Jake Lynch) - a proper homage, this one. We've got pat wagons from Block Mania, a Manta Prowl Tank providing air support, Johnny Vegas block as a backdrop and Dredd once again opting for day-stick carnage. Oh, what a lovely day!

---

Summary Justice (prog 2239; 2021; Stewart Kenneth Moore) - a little busy, this one. Is it that the descendants of The Human Torch have turned to a life of crime? Positives: wheel goes squish.

---

Crash Course II (prog 2373; 2024; Stewart Kenneth Moore) - what Dredd thinks of seminal manga. Also: why is the tree hologram not there in the published version? Was it there on the printed one?

Next: Ricardo Montage-ban...

That metallic cover Mega Special was a better, if only for the Dredd story that occupied most of its pages.

Nothing deep or meaningful, just Mega City gang warfare at its absolute peak.

Abslutely loved the art on that one - Edmund Bagwell using a pseudnym IIRC - remember being quite annoyed that it never led to a erguar gig on Dredd for him, as he captured MC1 brilliantly
