Sad news, a great author. I liked the recent Stainless Steel rat book.

Terrible news. His infamous satire, Bill the Galactic Hero is one of the greatest books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

I loved the stainless steel rat, and read all the books after reading the 2000ad versions as a kid.

Thanks Harry !

did 2000AD do 'all' the stories ?

Sad day... 2000AD only did the three: SSR, SSR Saves the World and SSR For President

The Justice department has a good re-education programme-it's called five to ten in the cubes.

Definitely Not Mister Pops

I only started reading his books this past year. We won't see his like again
You may quote me on that.

Very sad news. Got into his books after the adaption in 2000ad, read most of stainless and Deathworld. Time for a re-read I think.

Damn. Another author I've just not read anything near enough of. The 2000AD strips got me reading Stainless Steel Rat Saves the World, and I'll always picture Jim with an Ezquerra face. From that I read Make Room! Make Room! and then sort of stopped.

Very cool writing style. I should have read more.
The views above are entirely my own. And there's the problem.

I put an entry in the RIP thread, but I think Harry deserves more from us so I'll chip in here with something different. I put this, not copy n paste so it might read differently, on the memorium page Michael Carroll has set up.

Harry Harrison influenced my reading so much as a teen that one peice I wrote at school had the hero find a dog called Harrison, it was on his dog tag, waiting by the corpse of his owner. The hero needed 'stuff' and looted everything of use throughout the story. He found a tatty copy of a book by Harry Harrison in the dead guy's pocket, and realised that was where the dog's name came from.

No one ever asked but morbidly the dead old guy was me, it was set in the un-disclosed future. I do not own a dog called Harrison...

Very sad news. The Stainless Steel Rat series were the first mature/adult science fiction novels I read as a kid. (This was before the 2000ad adaptation), having cut my literary milk teeth on Dr Who tie-ins. A great writer with a great sense of humour who will be sadly missed.
